Animals From The Outback ANIMALS FROM THE OUTBACK Introduction • Australia is a big country with many different animal habitats. Australia’s deserts, rainforests, reefs, swamps, bushlands and mountains provide homes for many different types of animals. • Many of Australia’s animals are ‘endemic’ to the country. This means that they are only found in Australia, and nowhere else on Earth. • The main reason is because Australia is surrounded by sea, and isolated from the rest of the world. Many Australian animals have evolved on their own, and haven’t been able to spread to other countries or continents. Bandicoot Bandicoot • Bandicoots are marsupials that are endemic to Australia and New Guinea. (As we saw above, if an animal is ‘endemic’ to an area, then it isn’t found anywhere else.) • There are over 20 species of bandicoot – most are rabbit-sized, and all have long legs, thin tails and pointed noses. Bandicoots are omnivores that forage for food in their bushland habitat. Black Swan Black Swan • Black swans are elegant birds with black feathers and bright red bills. Black swans inhabit wetlands across Australia. They eat plants and algae, and use their long necks to find food. Cane Toad Cane Toad • Many Australians would rather the cane toad was not on a list of Australian animals! Cane toads secrete poison from behind their ears as a defense against predators. • The cane toad is an invasive species in Australia and has spread rapidly across the country since its introduction in the 1940s. Cane toads are a threat to many native Australian animals, who fall ill after eating the toads. -

April 2020 SCCF Member Update Cane Toads on Sanibel and Captiva By Chris Lechowicz, Herpetologist and Wildlife & Habitat Management Director It is that time of year again when it is slowly starting to warm up and any out-of-season rainstorms can trigger Parotoid gland amphibian breeding. On Sanibel, this is limited to frogs and toads as we do not have any salamander species on the island. Besides the southern leopard frog (Lithobates sphenocephalus) which is our sole true winter breeder, the southern toad (Anaxyrus terrrestris) and the giant toad aka cane toad (Rhinella marina) are the usual suspects for late winter/early spring breeding, especially after a heavy rain. The southern toad is native and too often confused for the invasive exotic giant toad — the cane toad — in our area. Giant toads go by several local names, depending on where you are located. However, the head morphology of slender-snouted crocodilians limits their ability to process large and complex prey. The slender-snouted Australian freshwater crocodile is known to be a dietary specialist consuming small aquatic prey, particularly aquatic arthropods and fsh. Here, we report observations of predation events by Australian freshwater crocodiles on medium- and large-sized mammals in the Kimberley region of Western Australia including macropods, a large rodent and an echidna. We discuss the signifcance of our observations from an ecological and morphological perspective and propose that terrestrial mammalian prey may be a seasonally important prey item for some populations of freshwater crocodiles. However, many animals that pose a threat to humans are highly cryptic, and detecting their presence before the interaction occurs can be challenging. We describe a method whereby the presence of the estuarine crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), a cryptic and potentially dangerous predator of humans, was detected using traces of DNA shed into the water, known as environmental DNA (eDNA). The estuarine crocodile is present in waterways throughout southeast Asia and Oceania and has been responsible for >1,000 attacks upon humans in the past decade. A critical factor in the crocodile’s capability to attack humans is their ability to remain hidden in turbid waters for extended periods, ambushing humans that enter the water or undertake activities around the waterline. In northern Australia, we sampled water from aquariums where crocodiles were present or absent, and we were able to discriminate the presence of estuarine crocodile from the freshwater crocodile (C. johnstoni), a closely related sympatric species that does not pose a threat to humans. -

NILE CROCODILE FACT SHEET 2017 Common Name: Nile crocodile Order: Crocodylia Family: Crocodylidae Genus & Species: Crocodylus niloticus Status: IUCN Least Concern; CITES Appendix I and II depending on country Range: The Nile crocodile is found along the Nile River Valley in Egypt and Sudan and distributed throughout most of sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar. Habitat: Nile crocodiles occupy a variety of aquatic habitats including large freshwater lakes, rivers, freshwater swamps, coastal estuaries, and mangrove swamps. In Gorongosa, Lake Urema and its network of rivers are home to a large crocodile population. Description: Crocodylus niloticus means "pebble worm of the Nile” referring to the long, bumpy appearance of a crocodile. Juvenile Nile crocodiles tend to be darker green to dark olive-brown in color, with blackish cross-banding on the body and tail. As they age, the banding fades. As adults, Nile crocodiles are a grey-olive color with a yellow belly. Their build is adapted for life in the water, having a streamlined body with a long, powerful tail, webbed hind feet and a long, narrow jaw. The eyes, ears, and nostrils are located on the top of the head so that they can submerge themselves under water, but still have sensing acuity when hunting. Crocodiles do not have lips to keep water out of their mouth, but rather a palatal valve at the back of their throat to prevent water from being swallowed. Nile crocodiles also have integumentary sense organs which appear as small pits all over their body. Organs located around the head help detect prey, while those located in other areas of the body may help detect changes in pressure or salinity. -

Biogeographically, it is distributed in the Indo-Pacific region and extends to northern Australia, with Australia representing the southernmost range of the species. In Western Australia C. porosus now extends to Exmouth Gulf. In the Kimberley region, C. porosus is found in most of the major river systems and coastal waterways, with the largest populations in the rivers draining into Cambridge Gulf, and the Prince Regent and Roe River systems. The Kimberly region presents a number of coastlines to the Saltwater Crocodile. In the Cambridge Gulf and King Sound, there are mangrove-fringed or mangrove inhabited tidal flats and tidal creeks, that pass landwards into savannah flats, providing crocodiles with a landscape and seascape for feeding, basking and nesting. The Kimberley Coast is dominantly rocky coasts, rocky ravines/ embayments, sediment-filled valleys with mangroves and tidal creeks, that generally do not pass into savannah flats, and areas for nesting are limited.
