Hallmark Video by Siyi Yang

The Hunted: Behind the Scenes By Siyi Yang Since I recently presented the video to you (and can still be found in the All School Chat!), I’ve experienced positive reviews and have therefore decided to write a short article on how we made the film and some interesting things about the production of it. One thing that was stuck in my head was the fact that I had to shoot the video in front of the main character as he walks towards the woods. This complexity meant that I had to walk backwards to try to avoid the thorny plants while working on the focus and making the video less shaky. As a result, we came up with the plan for Mr. McPherson to tug the sides of my jacket as I walked so that I could avoid the obstacles. This is also the reason for the walking to be so slow. I had to make the shots steady and any faster would have been too unsteady to see the main character’s face! Another thing that was eerie was carrying the skeleton. We had to carry the skeleton to the shoot every day, and oftentimes his jaw would fall off. His head also fell off quite easily, which prompted a solution which was to put

the bones in the bags and reassemble the skeleton later. The clothes, such as the trousers, also tended to slip off his body which was a pain for whoever had the misfortune to carry it to the site. One of the most difficult parts of the short film was composing the music. One thing that was especially painful was the fact that I had to make the music in sync with the video. Another problem was to compose it so it lasted for seven minutes. To the right is the music for the chase scene. Now, let’s talk

about what was cut from the story. First of all, one thing that was cut out was a basement scene. Originally, I had planned for a basement scene where the main character was to be bound to a chair. The basement scene would have been cool, but we ran out of time. Secondly, I thought a drone scene where the creepy guys were below the drone and the main character would just walk into the scene while talking was a cool idea. However, both scenes were dropped due to time constraints. Above right is a diagram of the shot. Thirdly, we did not have enough time to remember the lines for the characters. However, the talented people who were involved in the film were able to come up with lines on the spot! I think they had even done better than what would have been the original lines. Finally, one scene that we left out was a drone scene depicting the chase. That was not intended to be deleted, but I could not get a hold of the file, so I could not edit it in. To the right is a photo of when we were filming the scene. I hope you guys enjoyed learning more about the film, and if you have any more ideas for a future film, please let me know! Page 2

Philosopher’s Corner

The Philosopher’s Corner:

Meditation: What is it Exactly? by Mr. Brown

In the West, meditation has long been associated with stress reduction. It’s a simple practice involving sitting and breathing and is used to calm the mind and make practitioners feel good. It is also linked to good health. We even do it at Hillside with Ms. Lucey’s guided meditations. But, in its fundamental sense, what’s the purpose of meditation? The Buddha used

meditation to observe the inner workings of his mind. He sought an end to human suffering and believed the answer lay somewhere in himself. He wanted to know himself so completely that he could diagnose his suffering precisely and formulate a treatment for it. So, as legend has it, he sat under a Bodhi tree meditating in Bihar, India for 49 days and nights before attaining Enlightenment. So, what did this meditation consist of? Not much! In theory,

the path to Enlightenment is as simple as watching your thoughts and being

aware of sensations as they are occurring in the here and now. Sounds pretty straightforward, eh? Not so fast! In reality, simplicity of mind and awareness are not so easy to come by. Our minds are like raging rivers (the Buddha called it monkey mind) ceaselessly thrashing about, thinking about yesterday, tomorrow, the good, the bad, and clinging to thoughts as if they were a rope from which we were hanging from a cliff. And so the pattern of mind goes all day: “Hmm, I wonder what I’ll do tonight? Hey, did I get my homework done? Man, I forgot it again. Boy, that guy in my math class sure bothers me. Why are there people like that? Are we doing COVID testing

next week?” And it doesn’t just go on all day like this: it goes on each week, each month, each year for our whole lives. If you think hyper-active kids are a problem then just take a look at your inner world. It is the Everest of hyperactivity. Meditation is a technique that looks at the process. It buys you a bit of space to almost step outside that process and just watch. As you step outside of the raging flood of thoughts and put attention on the here and now

(your breath perhaps), you start to notice that there are small gaps in between

thoughts. These gaps are the home base to which the meditative mind is drawn. They are experienced as fresh, original, unbounded and unbiased

moments of experience. Yet, awareness exists within them. And as the meditator more and more gets pulled towards these gaps, clarity starts to unfold and eventually the operations of mind are completely exposed. Then, all of a sudden, as if in an instant flash of understanding, the game of life is revealed and we uncover the truth about our true unified nature. We see that all is interconnected: you, me, and everything else. Now, you don’t have to become enlightened, but if you want a little peace amidst the chaos of life,

give meditation a try. It’s a great way to chill out during exam week. And who knows? You might even find yourself being One with the exam. Page 7 Global Gazette Hillside School Diversity

From Veterans

Injured War Veteran Inspires by Michael Brown The date was April 10, 2012. During a deployment to Afghanistan, U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills had a bad day. In fact, it was catastrophic. He lost all four limbs. While he and his troops were sweeping terrain for bombs on a hot day, he took off his backpack and threw it on the ground. That’s when it happened. The backpack detonated a bomb buried under the surface of the nearby ground. It went off and nearly killed the Staff Sergeant. Medics immediately rushed over to him tying tourniquets around his four limbs. In his head, Mills says he was thinking “I’m not going to make it….I’ve seen guys die from a lot less…Don’t worry about me…go fix my guys.” Mills was put into a chopper headed for Kandahar

where he received emergency surgery. He had his arms and legs amputated and he was one of only five U.S. servicemen from the Iran and Afghanistan wars to survive such a procedure. You may think: Oh my! Moving forward his life would seem pretty grim. In the initial stages, Mills was overcome with feelings of depression, embarrassment, and anger. He questioned

himself and his worth. “How could I be a proper husband and father?” he

asked himself in his darkest moments. “How did an athletic guy from a small town in Michigan end up like this?” Self-pity and doubt crept in. It does to everyone. His wife Kelsey and daughter Chloe kept him going in the early days. He also received a visit from a fellow marine and quadruple amputee Todd Nicely who reassured Mills that he would dress and feed himself again, even drive. This motivated him and eventually he relearned those skills with the help of physical therapist Dr. Kerry Quinn and a grueling reconditioning regimen. He built up power in his hips and core that gave him the strength to sit up. Prosthetic legs helped him walk. Microprocessors were fitted into his legs and would make hundreds of internal adjustments to keep him upright. His legs were also equipped with a Bluetooth remote to help him drive. Five months after his injury, Mills walked a 5K competition in New York. Despite aching, bleeding, and falling over during the walk, Mills finished. As he grew stronger, his despair started to decrease. He realized that he can still be active in society,

a good father and husband, and that there’s no point in dwelling on the past.

“I really am thankful for the life I get to live.” Not only has Mills survived, he’s thriving and helping countless others. When called “wounded,” Mills gets annoyed. “I hate being called wounded. I prefer recalibrated warrior.” Recalibrated warrior has a certain methodical, tireless ring to it. And it clearly implies that Mills is on another mission, yet different from the ones he was on a decade earlier. Instead, these days Mills is a motivational speaker and international advocate for veterans and amputees. Page 14 Foods from Abroad

From Scotland

Fish ‘n Chips are a delicious staple of the Scottish diet. There is

nothing more Scottish than a pipin’ hot plate of fish ‘n chips. The dish has been around for centuries and remains a favorite not just in Scotland but in the UK as well. Fresh haddock filets are dipped in a mouthwatering powdery batter, smothered in salt and flour, and soused in malt vinegar. After the fish is dipped in batter, it is fried on the stove in vegetable oil for five minutes at 350 degrees until the outside is crispy and brown. The chips are then put into the same oil and pan and fried for 5 minutes as well. Traditionally, people used to eat their fish ‘n chips in newspaper wrappings. These days they are served on a cardboard plate
