DownBeat readers love lis- tening to Rollins’ concerts, as shown by his double win as Jazz Artist and Tenor Saxophonist of the Year in the 73rd Annual Readers Poll featured in this issue (Benny Golson writes about Rollins on Page 38). But the saxophonist sets high musical stan- dards for himself, which can make it painful for him to revisit his shows. “Especially since I lost my wife, I trusted her judgment so I didn’t have to listen to a lot of my music,” Rollins said from his home in upstate New York. “I listened to it after she gave me preliminary approval. Now I have to do this by myself, mainly, and it’s not easy. You hear all of the mistakes, things that could have been done, that should have been done. I ask, ‘Why didn’t I do it?’ I’m looking at myself from a critical point of view. Biographical Note by The HistoryMakers® Saxophonist, music producer and song writer Gene “Daddy G” Barge was born in Norfolk, Virginia on August, 9 1926. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and played clarinet in the school band. Barge then attended West Virginia State College where he first majored in architecture, but quickly switched to music because of his interest in the saxophone. After receiving his B.A. degree from West Virginia State College in 1950, Barge returned to Norfolk, Virginia and played with a number of bands and singing groups including the Griffin Brothers and the Five Keys. In 1955, Barge recorded his first saxophone instrumentals entitled “Country” and “Way Down Home” on Chess Records’ Checker Label. He taught music at Suffolk High School while playing and singing in bands and touring with both Ray Charles and the Philadelphia vocal group The Turbans.

November 6, 2018 (NEW YORK CITY) — Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, New York City Center’s Principal Dance Company, returns to the theater’s stage from November 28 – December 30, 2018 for a milestone season. During the Company’s Ailey Ascending 60th Anniversary celebration, Artistic Director Robert Battle leads Ailey’s 32 extraordinary dancers during this five-week holiday engagement that will elevate a legacy of excellence in artistry with premieres by some of today’s most revered and prolific choreographers, including world premieres by Rennie Harris and Ronald K. Brown; a company premiere by Wayne McGregor; a new production of by Robert Battle; the return of a recent premiere by Jessica Lang, and special performances of rarely seen works by Alvin Ailey himself.
