The Memorial Inscriptions of Christ Church Ironville NOTE: The first number shown against each inscription refers to the old original plan of the graveyard. The second number refers to the new plan drawn up by the Rev. Peter Taylor, Vicar of Ironville. A1. In Affectionate Remembrance of William Stanley STANSBY, formerly of Belper, who died 99. March 18th 1875 aged 65 yrs. Also of Anne, the beloved wife of the late William ABBOTT of Ripley and sister of the above, who died April 15th 1885 aged 78 yrs. “For me to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Stone mason: W. Wilmot, Langley Mill) Headstone – marble. A2. In Affectionate Remembrance of the late George SANT, who died April 25th 1859, aged 63 yrs. 98. In Loving Memory of Elizabeth, relict of the late George SANT, At rest Feb. 6th 1887, in her 89th year. Low tomb. A4. To The Memory of Abraham BOOTH, who died May 25th 1859, aged 47 yrs. 120. “And now, Lord, what is my hope; Truly my hope is even in thee.” Psalm 39 v.8. (Stone mason: Wilson) Upright slate. A10. In Affectionate Remembrance of John FARNSWORTH, who departed this life 12th June 1861, 192. aged 43 yrs. “Behold, he taketh away, who can say unto Him, What doest Thou?” Job c.9 v.12. Also of Annie FARNSWORTH, who departed this life, Feb. 8th 1866, aged 49 yrs. (Stone mason: J. B. Robinson, Derby) Low tomb. A13. To The Memory of James WILLIAMS, who died Aug. 17th 1863, aged 85 yrs. 158. Also to the memory of Hannah, wife of the above, who died April 13th 1863, aged 82 yrs. “Since it’s thy will that we should part, One through this world in hand and heart, Now this frail life we both resign, To be O Lord for ever thine.” (Stone mason: S.Wilson, Selston) Upright slate. A15. To The Memory of Barbara Ann, wife of John GREGORY, who died Oct. 16th 1864, aged 50 yrs. 159. “She has gone from this world of affliction and death, To the home of the righteous, the land of the blest, Removed from all sorrow, released from all pain Triumphant with Jesus for ever to reign.” (Stone mason: S Wilson, Selston.) Headstone – slate. A34. Daniel KING, died Oct. 12th 1877, aged 28 yrs. 172. Small headstone. A41. In Loving Memory of Joanna Marie, the Beloved wife of Percy COPE, who died March 20th 1918, 180. aged 42 yrs. In Loving Memory of Sarah Annie, the Beloved wife of Arthur COPE, who died June 22nd 1918, aged 70 yrs. Also of Frank E. COPE, died April 18th 1952, aged 74 yrs. “At Rest” Double grave with kerb, with two crosses lying. A48. In Memory of Peter JOWETT, who died Nov. ? also Hannah. 121. Born Nov. 26th 1796, Died Nov. 3rd 1869. “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord.” Mary CASSON, Born April 5th 1804, Died Sept. 24th 1855. William James CASSON, Died Nov. 17th 1848, aged 3 yrs. Low tomb. (coped) A60. In Memory of Richard GRAINGER, died April 17th 1877, aged 50 yrs. 142. Also of Ann, wife of the above, died March 29th 1889, aged 66 yrs. “Thy way, not mine O Lord.” (Stone mason: S. Morley, Somercotes.) Marble headstone. A63. In Memory of Thomas LINDLEY, who died Nov. 14th 1879, aged 39 yrs. 160. “The sweet remembrance of the just, Shall flourish when they sleep in dust.” Also Eliza, wife of the above, who died Oct. 24th 1916, aged 77 yrs. “Rest in Peace.” Marble headstone. A72. In Memory of Edward WEBB, who died Sept. 11th 1879, aged 42 yrs. 164. “Nothing in my hand I bring, Simply to thy cross I cling.” A90. Ann BRADBROOK died April 19th 1922, aged 53 yrs. (e) Also Mary Jane, his wife, died March 13th 1935, aged 72 yrs. 184. “Re-united, At Rest.” Marble scroll with kerbs. A93. In Affectionate Remembrance of Joseph KNIGHT, who died April 2nd 1859, aged 56 yrs. 101. Also Elizabeth, his wife, who died July 14th 1864, aged 61 yrs. (Stone mason: D. Petts.) Slate headstone with ledger. A97. In Loving Memory of Edward SEDGWICK, who departed this life Aug. 5th 1866, aged 7 mths. 122. Also Samuel SEDGWICK, departed this life July 18th 1872, aged 3 yrs. 7 mths. Children of Samuel and Elizabeth SEDGWICK. Also David SEDGWICK, died April 23rd 1873, aged ? Double grave with kerbs and railings, also broken cross. (Stone mason: W. Wilmot, Langley Mill.) A99. Samuel ARGILE, of Stoney Ford Farm, who died Feb. 8th 1886, in his 38th year. 123. “For so he giveth his beloved sleep.” Also Annie, the beloved wife of Samuel ARGILE, died Feb. 11th 1930, aged 81 yrs. “Peace Perfect Peace” “In Loving Remembrance” Same double grave as below. A100. In Loving Memory of Margaret, the beloved wife of Thomas EVANS, of Longcroft, late of Codnor 143. Park, died July 17th 1872, aged 53 yrs. Also Thomas EVANS, died Nov. 9th 1900, aged 81 yrs. “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord” The above inscriptions are on separate headstones on one double grave, kerbs. (Stone mason: E. Morley, Leabrooks.) A157. Mary BROUGH, wife of George, died Dec. 26th 1879, aged 72 yrs. 144. Also George, died Dec. 6th 1887, aged 78 yrs. Also Mary, their daughter, wife of William LONGDON, died July 24th 1878, aged 37 yrs. “She has gone from this world of affliction and death, To the home of the righteous, the land of the blest. Removed from all sorrows, released from all pain, Triumphant with Jesus for ever to reign.” Marble headstone. A162. Sarah WHITEHOUSE, wife of John, died July 27th 1880, aged 59 yrs. 161. “Farewell, I leave my children dear, The Lord your tender hearts will cheer. Farewell, I take a long remove, to dwell with Thee my God above. Also John WHITEHOUSE, her husband, died Jan. 4th 1887, aged 71 yrs. “O Lord how sudden was my death, unlooked for came to me, Therefore prepare thou looker on, for it may fall on thee.” Marble headstone with kerbs. A176. Charlotte, wife of Joseph WITHAM, of Mansfield, died Dec. 21st 1886, in her 23rd year. 165. “Day after day we saw her fade and gently sink away. Yet often in our hearts we prayed that she might longer stay.” (Stone mason: Foster Bros. Mansfield) Marble headstone. A181. Mary GREAVES, wife of Abraham (chemist) died Sept. 22nd 1855, aged 36 yrs. 103. “Intelligence and meakness with tenderness of heart, Unmixed with selfish weakness was of her being part. Her will to do outran her strength, But now her cares are o’er, And she has found a peace of rest where trouble is no more.” Also Florence Greaves, died Jan. 20th 1862, aged 2 yrs. And Anne Margaret Elizabeth GREAVES, died Nov. 27th 1869, aged 11 yrs. Also Margaret Newton, 2nd wife of Abraham, died Dec, 27th 1898, aged 67 yrs. Also Abraham GREAVES, formerly of Ironville, died at Chesterfield, Feb. 23rd 1898, aged 82 yrs. “The memory of the just smells sweet, and blossoms in the dust.” Also Sarah Alice GREAVES, died April 20th 1862, aged 3 wks. “No ill our babe can reach, it rests above, safe in the bosom of redeeming love.” And Frederick GREAVES, died Oct. 23rd 1866, aged 3 yrs. Large ornamental marble plinth. A191. Thomas RICHARDSON, of Codnor Park, died Feb. 25th 1873, aged 74 yrs. 102. Also Catherine, his wife, died Dec. 3rd 1860, aged 60 yrs. Also Elizabeth Catherine, dau. of above, died March 28th 1857, aged 25 yrs. Headstone in marble with kerbs. A198. Helen Sybilla GREAVES, died Dec. 30th 1869, aged 15 mths. 125. Also Arthur Francis, died Nov. 14th 1873, aged 9 mths. Also Ernest Walter, died May 26th 1879, aged 4 mths. (Buried in London) Also Henry Eldred, died Jan. 29th 1903, aged 32 yrs. Also William Samuel, died June 28th 1904, aged 61 yrs. “I am the resurrection and the life.” Also Sybilla MILLER (Auntie) died Feb. 2nd 1902, aged 79 yrs. Pink marble headstone. A201. Thomas MASTERS, died Oct. 7th 1877, aged 73 yrs. 166. “Like crowds of forest trees we stand, And some are marked to fall; The axe is laid unto the root, And soon will smite us all.” (Stone mason: Beresford, Ripley.) Sarah, wife of George WHITE, of this village, died May 17th 1863, in her 58th year. 104. “Thy will be done.” Also George WHITE, of Ironville, her husband, died Feb, 4th 1879, in his 71st year. “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.” Marble headstone.
