Biography Don Meadows was a prominent Orange County historian and scholar. Meadows was born in Shoals, Indiana on October 20, 1897 and his family moved to Orange County, California in 1903. He graduated from Pomona College in 1922 and received an M.S. in Ecological Studies from the University of California, Berkeley in 1931. He worked as a high school biology instructor, which included a position at Avalon High School on Santa Catalina Island. In addition to his teaching career, he also worked as a field supervisor for a biological survey of the Channel Islands, and Park Naturalist at the Big Basin Redwoods and Calaveras Big Trees State Parks. Meadows published and co-authored a number of works focusing on Southern California, Orange County, and Baja California history and amassed a substantial library and collection of archival materials to support his research. Various works were devoted to Orange County history, including his Historic Place Names in Orange County and Orange County under Spain, Mexico, and the United States, both published in 1966. He maintained close relationships with many significant local historians, including William McPherson, Bill Kimes, Paul Bailey, Burr Belden, Ed Carpenter, and Charles Heiskell, and also interviewed a number of these and other individuals. He was an active member of many historical and bibliographic organizations, including the Zamarano Club, Los Compadres con Libros, Los Angeles Corral of the Westerners, the Death Valley '49ers, E Clampus Vitus, and the Orange County Historical Society. Meadows moved to Yuba City, California in 1985, where he died on November 9, 1994. Writings, Series 2. 1912-1982 Physical Description: 2.9 linear ft. General Physical Description note: Series Scope and Content Summary This series contains holograph and typescript drafts of Meadows' published and unpublished works. Files also include research notes, publicity material and related ephemera, and a small number of bound publications. The majority of materials document his writings on the history of Los Angeles County and Channel Islands, and Orange County. This includes research materials and drafts used in the Los Angeles Museum's biological survey of the Channel Islands, and notes and publicity materials for his Historic Place names in Orange County, published in 1966. The largest group of files contain manuscript material for Meadows' unpublished history of Orange County, "Orange roots," an ongoing project from 1972 through 1992. Also included are some short works of fiction such as "Bustemante," written for a school composition course, and Pro patria, a 1921 Pomona College student play. Arrangement This series is arranged by the geographical area of the publication's focus.

Box-folder 47 : 18 Field notebook, 1919-1927 Scope and Content Summary The holograph and typescript field notebook consists of notes, photographs, and clippings documenting Meadows' activities and experiences in and around Orange County, between 1919 and 1927. Meadows produced his "field notes" notebooks over a period of approximately 70 years; the notebook is labeled as the ninth. The notebook includes detailed descriptions of local flora and fauna, an archaeological dig, a visit to the Rincon Band of Luiseno Indians, and photographs of landscapes in the region. Locations described include Lompoc (Purissima Mission), Irvine, Tustin, Laguna Beach, Orange, Catalina Island, Rincon Indian Reservation, Long Beach, Owensmouth (later Canoga Park), Pasadena, Olive, and Riverside.

Series Scope and Content Summary This series comprises incoming and outgoing correspondence with over 380 friends, colleagues, and institutions, accumulated by Meadows from 1906 until his death. Nearly all exchanges concern historical topics, and many letters include requests for historic and bibliographic information. Much of the correspondence is with fellow members of historical associations, such as the Los Angeles Corral of Westerners, and bibliophilic clubs such as the Zamorano Club and Los Compadres. Other correspondence is largely with friends and colleagues, including Ed Ainsworth, William Kimes, Horace and Leverne Parker, and Pat Patterson. Additional noteworthy correspondents include actor Iron Eyes Cody, bookseller Glen Dawson, bibliophile Charles Heiskell, printers Saul and Lillian Marks, historian Ted Parker, historian Jim Sleeper, Leighton Philips, Seigfried Demke, and historian Philip Brigandi. Some of the correspondence is addressed to Frances Meadows. Arrangement The letters are arranged alphabetically by surname of the correspondent, then chronologically.

Series Scope and Content Summary This series contains holograph and typescript drafts, research notes, and related materials documenting Frances Meadows' publications. The bulk of the files in this series document her unpublished and published work on Mary Refugio Carpenter Pleasants (1845-1888) and her diaries. Refugio Carpenter was the daughter of Lemuel Carpenter and Maria Dominguez Carpenter, and the second spouse of city official and local historian, Joseph Edward Pleasants. Her diaries, written between 1860 and 1865, provide a personal glimpse into her life, and portions of them were published by Frances Meadows, along with her extensive research notes.

General Physical Description note: Subseries Scope and Content Summary This subseries contains materials relating to Orange County and its localities. Files include clippings, articles, newspapers, newsletters and bulletins, directories, and related printed material. The vast majority of these materials comprises printed ephemera, such as brochures, pamphlets, handbills and broadsides, and posters. Printed ephemera also includes such items as souvenir and event programs, postcards, tablemats, bumper stickers, and campaign paraphernalia. Arrangement Files are primarily arranged by locality. Materials documenting Orange County in general, as opposed to specific localities within Orange County, are filed under the broad heading "General." Whenever possible, files are secondarily arranged into 18 topical groupings, such as education, government and politics, people, and recreation and entertainment. Under each topical grouping, material is arranged by subtopic, forms of material, title (in the case of publications), or name of individual or institution. Materials documenting aspects of a locality in general, as opposed to a specific topic, are filed within that particular locality under the heading "General." General Physical Description note: Subseries Scope and Content Summary This subseries contains materials relating to Southern California counties with the exception of Orange County, including Imperial, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties. This subseries also contains substantial material on the Channel Islands, particularly Catalina Island, and various Southern California desert and mountain regions. Files include clippings, articles, newspapers, newsletters and bulletins, directories, and related printed material. The vast majority of these materials are printed ephemera, such as brochures, pamphlets, handbills and broadsides, and posters. Printed ephemera also includes such items as souvenir and event programs, postcards, tablemats, bumper stickers, and campaign paraphernalia. General Physical Description note: Subseries Scope and Content Summary This subseries comprises photographic prints, glass and film-based negatives, and some postcards documenting California, Mexico, and Southwestern United States areas from the late 19th through 20th centuries. The bulk of these photographs document Southern California areas, particularly Los Angeles and Orange counties. Most of the photographic prints in this series are silver gelatin or collodion. There are also two daguerreotypes, an ambrotype, glass slides, and color prints. Photographic print formats include panoramic prints, stereographs, and cabinet cards.
