So I thought the best way is to put in KJN. So here is her letter . Hello we are touring a new album 'Atmospherics' in November/December this year and we are keen to visit Kent. We will be in Tunbridge Wells, but I wondered if you might suggest another venue where we would fit well. The musicians on the album some of whom are involved in the rout are John Horler, , , John Etheridge, Winston Clifford (drums) Mike Piggott (violin) and Graham PIke (trumpet). Tony and I are Kent people so would definitely like to play in Kent. Can you suggest or put us in touch with someone or a \jazz club that might enjoy the mu- sic? Many thanks Kate Daniels The mood of the album is what I call Jazz Noir – that is it aims to capture the style and mood of black and white Film noir of the 40’s and 50’s. Here is my website link so you can have a listen to some tracks and I would be happy to send promoters a CD . www.katedanielsjazz.co.uk When I gig just with John Etheridge and Mike Piggott and bass, we tend to do all sorts of styles from , and Hot Club to Hoagy Carmichael and Great American Songbook. Best wishes Kate. If interested please contact Kate (let her know you saw this in KJN

Their latest eight song release has them expanding their sound all over the place, beginning with the classic jazz sound of the forties and fifties on "Almost Straight Ahead." They move in a more modern jazz direction with a little bounce to their sound with the "Africa Boogie." They slow down for the eight-minute "Back Alley Blues," before adding some Latin flair to the nine-minute, Santana-like "Groove Samba." The album closes with the bebop pep of "Song For Habib." Jazz In Kent Canterbury Arts Festival October 18 November 1 Africa's most important musician, Hugh Masekela is appearing on October 22, at The Marlowe Theatre. Hugh Masekela is a world-renowned flugel hornist, trumpeter, bandleader, composer, singer and defiant political voice who remains deeply connected at home, while his international career sparkles. At the age of 14, Father Trevor Huddleston, provided Masekela with a trumpet and, soon after, the Huddle- ston Jazz Band was formed. His Afro-Jazz sound was born in the late 1950s dur- ing a period of intense creative collaboration, most notably performing in the 1959 musical King Kong. Hugh became a member of the legendary South Afri- can group, the Jazz Epistles. Aged 21 he left South Africa, enrolled at the Manhat- tan School of Music. It was the 1960’s and New York was full with outstanding jazz musicians, Hugh soon was watching all the top names in American jazz.

Under the tutelage of Dizzy Gillespie and Louis Arm- strong, Hugh was encouraged to develop his own unique style, feeding off African rather than Ameri- can influences – his debut album, released in 1963, was entitled ‘Trumpet Africaine’ Which went to Number One on the American pop charts ,and became a worldwide smash hit. worldwide smash hit. Hugh returned home, in 1900, following the unbanning of the ANC and the release of Nelson Mandela – an event anticipated in Hugh’s anti-apartheid anthem ‘Bring Home Nelson Mandela’ (1986) which had been a rallying cry around the world. His story is far from over, and as Bra Hugh approaches his 75th birthday he shows no signs of slowing down. He maintains a busy international tour schedule as his fan base around the world continues to grow.

What is a Spiegeltent, literally translates as a ‘Hall of Mirrors’ and originates from Belgium in the 1920s. These highly decorative, travelling dance halls used to tour Europe, providing a stunning environment for music and dance events to take place. The Spiegeltent will be sited at the St Lawrence Cricket Ground on Old Dover Road, a short distance from Canterbury city centre (approx 15 minute walk / 2 minute drive).

12 Two exciting bands–appearing at Two Traditional jazz, Clubs in Kent Farnborough and Tunbridge Wells Roger Marks /Chris Walker & Pedigree Jazz Band A chance meeting, playing together on a cruise ship brought Roger & Mark together. Talking about their mu- sic they found they both enjoyed traditional jazz. The outcome an idea of a stage show entitled “Tribute to , showcasing flagship tunes of the period popularized by Chris, Acker and Kenny with a bit of Dutch Swing College, Humph (who we know would probably not have approved) and Papa Bue thrown in for good measure thrown in for good measure.

It became clear that, amongst other things, they both shared the same fondness for those early days. And over the years they have played the tunes popular- ised by and Acker Bilk at that time - such as Bourbon Street Parade, Chimes Blues, White Cliffs of Dover, Marching Through Georgia etc, etc.

So with an all star line up of musicians, including three prominent and popular band leaders playing a programme consisting entirely of those tunes most readily identified with the so-called “trad boom”. ‘A Tribute to Trad’ was born.

Chris and Roger will embellish their presentation with supporting facts and anecdotes of those times. Personnel -Roger Marks – Trombone, Chris Walker – Clarinet, Graham Trevarton -Trumpet and Vocals, Ken Ames - Banjo, Tony Mann - , John Bell - Drums. Graham Hughes and The Sunshine Kings Graham Hughes, is featured artist at many clubs and festivals around the UK, but with The Sunshine Kings he is able to choose musicians to work with who take the same pleasure in playing music that people enjoy

The Sunshine Kings are very popular at jazz clubs around London and the South East, and have toured the length of England appearing at clubs and festivals.

A rich mixture of swing, New Orleans, Charleston and blues, all played with intensity and a sense of fun, The Sunshine Kings brings it all together into a band that makes people of all ages dance, clap, tap toes, and go home with a smile. Great for dancing, great for lis- tening, great for anyone wanting to have a good time. The band’s repertoire is drawn largely from the small group jazz of the 20’s and 30’s with a few other interesting numbers from other eras thrown in to spice things up. Don Rendell and The Don Rendell Sextet’ 1954-1955

When ever Don Rendell’s name is mentioned it always the Don Rendell/ Qnt that comes to mind. But he won widespread fame between 1950-1953 with the Seven. Steve Race said, in ‘le Jazz Hot’ March 1955 in my opinion ‘Don is one of the best modern jazz musician, we have ever known, in Europe.

In the early days he had an ambition to establish a small jazz unit on a secure and permanent footing,

He started gigging around various jazz clubs, It was during this period he formed a partnership with fellow tenor saxophonist , picking rhythm sections along the way. At last they found a permanent venue the short lived London Jazz Centre. In 1954, he led a unit which met with only limited economic success despite critical acclaim. The name of this new band was ‘The Don Rendell Sextet’

First Dickie Hawdon became part of the front line on trumpet and flugel horn. Don Rendell Followed by all important rhythm session which was, Damion Robinson on piano, Pete Elderfield on bass and on drums Fredie Manton. It was round about this time that Ronnie, switched to baritone. (This was line-up I first saw this group at the Flamingo Club, and I got hooked on playing the ) Don added some commercial charts to its library, and hoping to become a touring band. But this was not to be, despite the musicians unbelievable loy- alty to Don, faced with great financial problems The Don Rendell Sextet were forced to disband in 1955, lasting just over a year. The band personal stayed the same, with two exceptions Bass and drums as you can see from the records.
