Williams commissioned Brisbane architects Andrea Stombuco & Son to design the villa Rhyndarra and its stables building. Andrea Stombuco designed many churches and ecclesiastical buildings and was completing the opulent Her Majesty's Theatre in Queen Street when Rhyndarra was commissioned. He was noted for his residential work, which included "Palma Rosa in Hamiliton". In the early 1890s the stables building was used as a schoolhouse by the Salvation Army and then as the Quarter Master's store during the occupation by the Department of Defence from 1942 as part of the Yeronga Military hospital. Watson played a large role in nineteenth century society as a property owner, politician and builder, and he had worked as a contractor on buildings designed by Stombuco. The building was constructed during the boom of the 1880s, when masonry buildings began to replace timber shops in the Valley. It was leased to a range of small business tenants, whose nationalities (Chinese, Greek and German) reflected the multicultural nature of the Valley from the late nineteenth century. History Until the mid-1880s, Wickham Street was a quiet and sparsely populated street. Although the section between Duncan and Brunswick Streets hosted the Roman Catholic chapel from the late 1850s and the Prince Consort hotel from the early 1860s, Anne Street (as it was then spelled) was the main commercial district of Fortitude Valley. The Valley itself was a quiet and sparsely populated town until the 1880s, when an economic boom encouraged the construction of brick and stone buildings, replacing wooden ones. Residents of the Valley also began demanding better services, including improved transport, roads and sewage systems.

The honourable member for Sherwood was not present in the Chamber at the time and therefore was unable to take a point of order and ask for a withdrawal. As a result of this incident, today a meeting of the Temporary Chairmen was held and, in conformity with the practice of the House, it will be the policy of the Chair that when unparliamentary language is used and the honourable member aggrieved is not present in the Chamber, the Chair will intervene and order the withdrawal of the offending words. It also provides evidence of the continuing development of Hamilton during the late nineteenth century as one of Brisbane’s most elite residential suburbs where many fine homes were built overlooking the Brisbane River. History This striking Victorian residence was designed by Brisbane architects, John Hall & Son circa 1887 for Mrs Kate Quinlan. Kate Quinlan was a partner in the firm of Fitzgerald, Quinlan and Co. that established the Castlemaine Brewery at Milton in 1877-78. Mrs Quinlan named her new home Marie Ville. Marie Ville is built on the lower slopes of Toorak Hill at Hamilton, overlooking Kingsford-Smith Drive (once named Hamilton Road) and the Brisbane River. During Brisbane’s penal period, this area was the thoroughfare leading to the Female Factory at Eagle Farm. In the decades after free settlement, the district became one of Brisbane’s most elite residential enclaves, with the construction of the stone mansions of Toorak and Eldernell (later Bishopsbourne) on Toorak and Hamilton Hills in the 1860s.

    Andrea Stombuco (John Oxley Library, State Library of Queensland) Andrea Giovanni Stombuco (c.1820-1907) was born in Florence, Italy. Newspaper death notices state that he was born in 1820, conflictingly an 1882 oath of allegiance states he was 44 years old, and cemetery records note that he was 82 years old when he died in early 1907!. Stombuco left Italy when he was quite young and travelled extensively in Russia and America. He then spent some years in South Africa, where he is said to have owned a quarry and worked in the stone-building industry. At Cape Town he married fifteen year old Jean Frances Miles in late1849. The discovery of gold in Australia drew Stombuco to Victoria in 1851; he travelled to the Eaglehawk diggings near Bendigo with Jean and their infant daughter Marie. Andrea turned to sculpture, monumental masonry, building and later, architecture. He endeavours to establish a position as a sculptor included a group of statuary executed in cement, wax and marble - exhibited in the rotunda of the Intercolonial Exhibition at Melbourne in 1866, colloquially known as Judge Barry's Exhibition. He worked in Melbourne, was contractor for Catholic churches at Kyneton, Malmsbury and Taradale (all north-west of Melbourne on the road to Bendigo), and for some of the stonework of Ballarat Cathedral. Stombuco moved to Goulburn, NSW in 1869, where he was appointed Catholic diocesan architect by Bishop William Lanigan. He carried out a number of projects there, but is best known for the first part of the nave of the Cathedral of St Peter & Paul at Goulburn in 1871-72.
