Special Collections, University Libraries, University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Las Vegas, Nevada. ^ Return to Table of Contents Biographical Note Musician John (Johnnie) Alvin Ray was born on January 10, 1927 in Hopewell, Oregon and spent his childhood on a farm before moving to Portland, Oregon as a teenager. He became deaf in his right ear at the age of thirteen due to an accident while on a trip with his Boy Scout Troop. Ray first attracted attention while performing in Detroit, in an R & B nightclub where he was the only white performer. He found his inspiration in rhythm singers like Kay Starr, LaVern Baker and Ivory Joe Hunter. Ray developed a unique rhythm-based style that was far closer to what would become known as "rock and roll." Listeners often assumed he was African American when his records were first broadcast over the radio. His first record was one he wrote himself, "Whiskey and Gin." It became a minor hit in 1951, but by the end of the year Ray would be dominating the charts with the extremely successful hit "Cry" backed by "The Little White Cloud That Cried," for which he also wrote the music and lyrics. He quickly became a teen idol. - Page 3- Guide to the Johnnie Ray Music Scores In 1952 Ray established the Johnnie Ray Foundation for the deaf, with the express purpose of supplying underprivileged children and adults with hearing aids. Through Ray's donations and donations of others, training devices for hearing impaired children were purchased and given to deaf schools and scholarship grants were obtained for the training of teachers for the deaf. In 1958 an operation intended to restore Ray's hearing left him almost completely deaf in both ears. Ray's unorthodox performing style included beating up his piano, writhing on the floor and what he became most famous for: crying. With a plethora of hit songs in the 1950s, he was soon being pushed aside as younger and younger artists began dominating the charts. Johnnie Ray passed away on February 24, 1990, in Los Angeles, California from chronic liver disease. ^ Return to Table of Contents Scope and Contents Note The Johnnie Ray Music Scores contain hand-written musical scores from the musician Johnnie Ray that were created between 1958 and 1991. • Jimmy Raney Thesis: Blurring the Barlines By: Zachary Streeter
Jimmy Raney Thesis: Blurring the Barlines By: Zachary Streeter A Thesis submitted to the Graduate School-Newark Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Jazz History and Research Graduate Program in Arts written under the direction of Dr. Lewis Porter and Dr. Henry Martin And approved by Newark, New Jersey May 2016 ©2016 Zachary Streeter ALL RIGHT RESERVED ABSTRACT Jimmy Raney Thesis: Blurring the Barlines By: Zach Streeter Thesis Director: Dr. Lewis Porter Despite the institutionalization of jazz music, and the large output of academic activity surrounding the music’s history, one is hard pressed to discover any information on the late jazz guitarist Jimmy Raney or the legacy Jimmy Raney left on the instrument. Guitar, often times, in the history of jazz has been regulated to the role of the rhythm section, if the guitar is involved at all. While the scope of the guitar throughout the history of jazz is not the subject matter of this thesis, the aim is to present, or bring to light Jimmy Raney, a jazz guitarist who I believe, while not the first, may have been among the first to pioneer and challenge these conventions. I have researched Jimmy Raney’s background, and interviewed two people who knew Jimmy Raney: his son, Jon Raney, and record producer Don Schlitten. These two individuals provide a beneficial contrast as one knew Jimmy Raney quite personally, and the other knew Jimmy Raney from a business perspective, creating a greater frame of reference when attempting to piece together Jimmy Raney.

  • Aint Gonna Study War No More / Down by the Riverside
The Danish Peace Academy 1 Holger Terp: Aint gonna study war no more Ain't gonna study war no more By Holger Terp American gospel, workers- and peace song. Author: Text: Unknown, after 1917. Music: John J. Nolan 1902. Alternative titles: “Ain' go'n' to study war no mo'”, “Ain't gonna grieve my Lord no more”, “Ain't Gwine to Study War No More”, “Down by de Ribberside”, “Down by the River”, “Down by the Riverside”, “Going to Pull My War-Clothes” and “Study war no more” A very old spiritual that was originally known as Study War No More. It started out as a song associated with the slaves’ struggle for freedom, but after the American Civil War (1861-65) it became a very high-spirited peace song for people who were fed up with fighting.1 And the folk singer Pete Seeger notes on the record “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy and Other Love Songs”, that: "'Down by the Riverside' is, of course, one of the oldest of the Negro spirituals, coming out of the South in the years following the Civil War."2 But is the song as we know it today really as old as it is claimed without any sources? The earliest printed version of “Ain't gonna study war no more” is from 1918; while the notes to the song were published in 1902 as music to a love song by John J. Nolan.3 1 http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/grovemusic/spirituals,_hymns,_gospel_songs.htm 2 Thanks to Ulf Sandberg, Sweden, for the Pete Seeger quote.

  • Mars Oraa by Ken South
Mars Oraa By Ken South In 1952 Harry Truman was President, the Today Show had its premiere on NBC, and many Americans heard the term transsexual for the first time with Christine Jorgensen’s sex reassignment surgery story. Mr. Potato Head was first revealed to the public, the first issue of Mad Magazine hit the stands and “Singin’ In The Rain” debuted at Radio City Music Hall. Johnnie Ray sang “Cry”, the Mills Brothers’ hit was “Glow Worm”, and Marlon Brando made the cry “Stella” famous in the movie, “Street Car Named Desire”. Also Elpidio Quirino was President of the Philippines when, in Manila, on the 6th of March, Mr. February joined his already large family of parents, four brothers and four sisters. Following his elementary school education, he graduated from vocational school in 1972 and received a degree as a hair dresser. He also excelled at a dance academy and during the 80s performed as a professional back-up dancer for several entertainers, including performing on television. The talented Mr. February also used his skills as a cook in several venues, including the United States Naval base at Subic Bay. And for two years, his cooking skills took him to work in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia! In 1992 Mr. F. joined some of his family in San Francisco, and became an American citizen in 1994. Over the next few years Mr. F. engaged both his cooking and hairdressing skills to work in several locations. He moved to Hartford, CT, and lived with one of his sisters for a few years, and while there made several trips to Boston to enjoy its fascinating gay scene.
