Why Every Show Needs to Be More Like the Wire (“Not Just the Facts, Ma’Am”)
DIALOGUE WHY EVERY SHOW NEEDS TO BE MORE LIKE THE WIRE (“NOT JUST THE FACTS, MA’AM”) NEIL LANDAU University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) The Wire (HBO, 2002-2008) upends the traditional po- ed the cop-drama universe. Talking Through the Wire Jennifer Fremlin, Huntingdon College
Talking Through the Wire Jennifer Fremlin, Huntingdon College I am at something of a critical loss when it comes to discussing The Wire. As a feminist media theorist especially interested in filmic representations of race and gender, I am pretty well trained at deconstructing hegemonic instantiations of the privileging of whiteness in movies and on t.v., especially those that seem to offer themselves as radical critiques but end up simply reinscribing familiar hierarchies. Popular culture—hit t.v. programs, award-winning movies, Hollywood stars—offers an endless supply of material on which to hone my knife. This is mostly shooting fish in a barrel, instead of any great testament to my mad skills. But The Wire, HBO’s critically acclaimed yet apparently largely unwatched series, leaves me a bit flummoxed. The problem is, first, that I loved watching it, reveling in its intricate, almost Shakespearian or Dickensian handling of interwoven plots and themes of power and corruption at all levels: economic, political, juridical, educational, racial, journalistic and sexual. Characters are complex and multidimensional, revealed in their working and personal lives to be neither good or bad, but some of both, often at the same moment, or neither, just like the rest of us. They sometimes try to do the right thing, even if by dubious means, or make more money, or get laid, or help others, but just as often they fuck up, and their motives are a nice messy stew of righteousness and self-serving. The show solicits me as a smart viewer, which on the one hand I critically distrust, but on the other hand flatters me to no end. -

Seth Klarman wrote the book on value investing. Literally. His 1991 Margin of Safety: Risk-Averse Value Investing Strategies for the Thoughtful In- vestor, now out of print, is so sought-after that it is available for rent on eBay. Klarman’s legendary success as both an investor and a philanthropist MBA 1982 belies another aspect of his personality: he enjoys living his life out of the spotlight. SETH KLARMAN At Baupost’s Boston headquarters, Klarman spends most of his time on the trading floor — not making trades per se, but taking in what’s going on in the 165-person company he helped launch PRESIDENT, shortly after earning his MBA. Rarely using his private office, he THE begins each day reading four to six newspapers, surrounded by colleagues. The atmosphere at Baupost is serious but also kind- BAUPOST hearted. “We pride ourselves on mutual respect,” he says. “If GROUP someone comes in and is on their Blackberry and is too busy to say hello to the receptionist, that’s not okay.” That level of compassion can be seen in all aspects of Klar- man’s life. A devoted father of three, he has made family a top priority over the years, taking time to coach his daughters’ soc- cer teams and attend his son’s piano recitals. Together with his wife, Beth, he has also given generously to causes they believe in. “Giving back has been a theme for us from a very early stage,” says Beth, who met Seth on a cruise around Boston Harbor in 1982. “We care about the urgent needs of our local community.” The foundation bearing the family name, run by Beth, has sup- ported medical, educational, religious, and social service organi- zations, including McLean and Beth Israel Deaconess hospitals and Combined Jewish Philanthropies. -
MUSIC 351: Psychedelic Rock of the 1960S Spring 2015, T 7:00–9:40 P.M., ENS-280
MUSIC 351: Psychedelic Rock of the 1960s Spring 2015, T 7:00–9:40 p.m., ENS-280 Instructor: Eric Smigel ([email protected]) M-235, office hours: Mondays & Tuesdays, 3:00–4:00 p.m. This is a lecture class that surveys psychedelic rock music and culture of the 1960s. Psychedelic music played an important role in the development of rock music as a predominant art form during one of the most formative decades in American history. Emerging along with the powerful counterculture of hippies in the mid-1960s, psychedelic rock reflects key elements of the “Love Generation,” including the peace movement, the sexual revolution, the pervasive use of recreational drugs (especially marijuana and LSD), and the growing awareness of Eastern philosophy. The main centers of countercultural activity—the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco and the London Underground—drew a high volume of media exposure, resulting in the famous “Summer of Love” and culminating in popular music festivals in Monterey, Woodstock, and Altamont. Students in this course will examine the music and lyrics of a selection of representative songs by The Grateful Dead, The Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and the Holding Company, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and other bands closely associated with the burgeoning psychedelic scene. Students will also consult primary source material—including interviews with several of the musicians, influential literature of the period, and essays by key figures of the movement—in order to gain insight into the social, political,
