News Release
NEWS RELEASE For Release: Monday, August 16, 2004 Ticket Info: www.saschampionship.com or 1-800-531-7PGA (7742) Contact: Chris Madigan, [email protected] or (203) 352-6325 TOM KITE COMMITS TO SAS CHAMPIONSHIP PRESENTED BY FORBES CARY, N.C. – Tournament officials for the SAS Championship presented by Forbes announced today that 1992 U.S. Open winner Tom Kite intends to play in the fourth annual SAS Championship. The SAS Championship, an official event on the Champions Tour, returns to Prestonwood Country Club, September 20-26. Kite, a 19-time PGA TOUR winner, has seven Champions Tour victories in his four years on Tour. His most recent win came eight days ago at the 3M Championship when he sank three birdies in the last seven holes to win by one stroke over Craig Stadler, also committed to the SAS Championship field. Kite has seven other top-10 finishes this year. His victory at the 3M Championship ended a winless streak dating back to October 2002 and spanning 47 tournaments where he finished in second place six times. One of those second place finishes was last year’s SAS Championship. Kite recorded a career best single-round score of 61 at Prestonwood Country Club during Sunday’s final round, vaulting him from 34th place into a second place finish behind D.A. Weibring. “Tom made an incredible run at last year’s title, posting a score early, creating the stage for an incredibly dramatic finish,” said Jeff Kleiber, tournament director. “He’s one of the best golfers that’s ever played the game. -
Ron Arnst's HMG Course Collection Summaries
HISTORY MAKER GOLF Championship Golf Game • Course Summaries Course Collection ONE Blackjack GC, Las Vegas NV / based on TPC SUMMERLIN TPC Summerlin’s layout, carved from a magnificent swath of rugged desert terrain by renowned golf course architect Bobby Weed, provides a good reference for the Blackjack GC. TPC Summerlin’s lush bentgrass greens, numerous water features and an abundance of pine trees all contrast dramatically with undisturbed desert washes. The course features four closing holes that deliver top flight golf drama. The final charge begins with the par 4, 15th hole – a drivable par 4 that will temp most players. If the tee shot misses the green, an “up and down” birdie is possible, but not easy, due to the severely elevated and undulated green – which is surrounded by five bunkers that regularly attract stray tee shots. The 16th hole is a relatively downhill par-5 that is reachable with two good shots. The green is guarded by water short of the green, and bunkers beyond. Only a mid-iron will be necessary for the second shot, with a birdie almost a certainty. A challenging and un-nerving par-3, the 17th hole plays downhill with the green guarded closely by a lake on the left and by bunkers on the right. Par is good score and birdies are rare, should players need to make up ground. The 18th is a well-designed and strategic finishing hole which moves right to left off the tee. The green is protected on the left by a lake. An aggressive tee shot with the driver can leave the player just a short iron to a very deep green from front to back. -

Jordan Spieth’s left Belbow juts toward the target through impact, and Dustin Johnson bows his left wrist as he takes the club back. If you’re learning how to swing or just taking a lesson to improve, the idiosyncracies of many of the game’s best players probably wouldn’t be things an instructor would try to get you to copy. They’re too individualistic. But that’s not the case when it comes to the signature feature of Hideki Matsuyama’s swing—it just might be the thing you need to hit better shots. “There’s a distinct pause between his backswing and downswing. Everything stops for a split second,” says Jim McLean, one of Golf Digest’s 50 Best Teachers. “It allows him to get in the same great position at the top and sync up his downswing beautifully. The pause makes it special.” ▶ ▶ ▶ tk gutter credit tk gutter credit 58 golfdigest.com | august 2018 Photograph by First Lastname Photograph by First Lastname month 2018 | golfdigest.com 59 how the pause came to be ▶ As noticeable as the interlude is, and as much as on the range with hideki it has helped Matsuyama’s swing—the 26-year- old has been 10th or better in the World Golf Ever wonder how the best players Ranking since the fall of 2016—would you be- prepare for a round?
