Determining the Physical Properties of the B Stars I. Methodology And
ASTROPHYSICAL JOURNAL, IN PRESS Preprint typeset using LATEX style emulateapj v. 04/03/99 DETERMINING THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE B STARS I. METHODOLOGY AND FIRST RESULTS EDWARD L. FITZPATRICK Villanova University fi[email protected] DERCK MASSA Raytheon ITSS massa@xfiles.gsfc.nasa.gov Astrophysical Journal, in press ABSTRACT We describe a new approach to fitting the UV-to-optical spectra of B stars to model atmospheres and present initial results. Using a sample of lightly reddened stars, we demonstrate that the Kurucz model atmospheres can produce excellent fits to either combined low dispersion IUE and optical photometry or HST FOS spectrophotom- etry, as long as the following conditions are fulfilled: 1. an extended grid of Kurucz models is employed, 2. the IUE NEWSIPS data are placed on the FOS absolute flux system using the Massa & Fitzpatrick (1999) transformation, and 3. all of the model parameters and the effects of interstellar extinction are solved for simultaneously. When these steps are taken, the temperatures, gravities, abundances and microturbulence velocities of lightly reddened B0-A0 V stars are determined to high precision. We also demonstrate that the same procedure can be used to fit the energy distributions of stars which are reddened by any UV extinction curve which can be expressed by the Fitzpatrick & Massa (1990) parameterization scheme. We present an initial set of results and verify our approach through comparisons with angular diameter mea- surements and the parameters derived for an eclipsing B star binary. We demonstrate that the metallicity derived from the ATLAS 9 fits to main sequence B stars is essentially the Fe abundance. -
Determining the Physical Properties of the B Stars II. Calibration Of
Astronomical Journal, March 2005 Determining the Physical Properties of the B Stars II. Calibration of Synthetic Photometry E.L. Fitzpatrick1, D. Massa2 ABSTRACT We present a new calibration of optical (UBV , Str¨omgren uvbyβ, and Geneva) and near IR (Johnson RIJHK and 2MASS) photometry for B and early A stars derived from Kurucz (1991) ATLAS9 model atmospheres. Our sample of stars consists of 45 normal, nearby B and early A stars which have high quality, low resolution IUE spectra and accurate Hipparcos parallaxes. The calibration is unique because it relies only on the UV spectral energy distributions, the absolute flux calibration of the V filter and the Hipparcos distances to determine the appropriate model atmospheres for the program stars. These models are then used to calibrate the synthetic photometry. We compare our results with previous, well accepted results and provide a thorough discussion of the random errors and systematic effects affecting the calibration. In particular, we demonstrate the influence of v sin i on surface gravities derived from fitting model atmospheres. Finally, we discuss some of our intended applications of this new calibration. Subject headings: 1. Introduction arXiv:astro-ph/0412542v1 20 Dec 2004 We have begun a detailed study of Galactic B and early-A main sequence stars, whose goals are to both derive detailed measurements of the basic physical properties of these stars (along with ancillary information such as distance and interstellar extinction characteristics) and to critically test the current atmosphere and interior models which provide the transformation between observ- able quantities and the stellar properties, as well as yielding insight into the structure and evolution of these stars. -
Accurate Age Determinations of Several Nearby Open Clusters Containing Magnetic Ap Stars When We Consulted the Literature for Cluster Ages, We Found Quite (E.G

To study the time evolution of magnetic fields, chemical abundance peculiarities, and other characteristics of magnetic Ap and Bp stars during their main sequence lives, a sample of these stars in open clusters has been obtained, as such stars can be assumed to have the same ages as the clusters to which they belong. However, in exploring age determinations in the literature, we find a large dispersion among different age determinations, even for bright, nearby clusters. Aims. Our aim is to obtain ages that are as accurate as possible for the seven nearby open clusters α Per, Coma Ber, IC 2602, NGC 2232, NGC 2451A, NGC 2516, and NGC 6475, each of which contains at least one magnetic Ap or Bp star. Simultaneously, we test the current calibrations of Te and luminosity for the Ap/Bp star members, and identify clearly blue stragglers in the clusters studied. Methods. We explore the possibility that isochrone fitting in the theoretical Hertzsprung-Russell diagram (i.e. log(L/L⊙) vs. log Te), rather than in the conventional colour-magnitude diagram, can provide more precise and accurate cluster ages, with well-defined uncertainties. -
