Abstract __________________________________________________ Virtually all temperate insects overwinter in diapause, a pre-emptive response to adverse environmental conditions and for many species a pre-requisite of winter survival. Increased global temperatures have the potential to disrupt the induction and maintenance of diapause. In the first part of this thesis, a four year phenological study of the blow fly, Calliphora vicina, identifies that diapause is already being delayed due to high temperatures experienced by larvae within the soil layer. Laboratory studies identified that non-diapause life stages are capable of heightening cold tolerance through a rapid cold hardening ability, and winter acclimated adults maintain locomotion at lower temperatures than summer acclimated adults. A previously unrecognised threat, however, is that higher adult temperatures have the transgenerational effect of reducing the cold tolerance of diapausing progeny. In the second part of this thesis, the relationship between diapause and cold hardiness was investigated. The amino acid, alanine, was up-regulated as part of the diapause programme. Non-diapause larvae developed on an alanine augmented-diet expressed cold tolerance phenotypes similar to those of their diapausing counterparts. This adds to a growing body of evidence to suggest that amino acids have a direct role in insect cold tolerance. i Acknowledgements __________________________________________________ First, I would like to thank my supervisors Professor Jeff Bale and Dr Scott Hayward for providing me with an opportunity to undertake a PhD at the University of Birmingham. Abstract approved , (Major Professor) The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of controlled environmental factors upon the development of the spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana Clem.) and to utilize the information for im- proving mass rearing procedures. A standard and a green form of the bud - worm occurring in the Pacific Northwest were compared morphologically and as to their suitability for mass rearing. " An exploratory study demonstrated that both forms of the budworm could be reared in quantity in the laboratory under conditions outlined by Stehr, but that greater survival and efficiency of production would be needed for mass rearing purposes. Further experimentation revealed that, by manipulating environmental factors during the rearing process, the number of budworm generations could be increased from one that occurs normally to nearly three per year. For the standard form of the budworm, procedures were developed for in- creasing laboratory stock twelvefold per generation. Productivity of the green form was much less, indicating that the standard form may be better suited for laboratory rearing in quantity. Recommended rearing procedures consist of the following steps. Egg masses should be incubated at temperatures between 70 and 75 °F and a relative humidity near 77 percent. Under these conditions, embryo matur- ation and hibernacula site selection require approximately 8 to 9 days. The larvae should be left at incubation conditions for no longer than three weeks.

The remaining emerged adults of Syrphidae were classified to eight species. The parasitization var- ied within the years of observation and oscillated from 14,4% to 46,4%. Four para- sitic Hymenoptera: Diplazon laetatorius (F.), Diplazon sp., Pachyneuron grande (Thoms.), and Syrphophagus aeruginosus (Dalm.) were reared. The parasitoids identified belong to the following three families Ichneumonidae, Pteromalidae, and Encyrtidae. The larg- est group of reared parasitoids belonged to the family Ichneumonidae of which the most frequent was Diplazon laetatorius (F.). It occurred in each year of observations. The parasitization by D. laetatorius reached 21,7%. V51, A bidjan, Zvory Coast Abstract The possibilities of migrations in the West African species of Dysdercus are discussed and a hypothesis of long-range migrations asso- ciated \with the Inter-TTopical Convergence Zone and its wind systems is proposed. Catches of adult Dysdercus in four light-traps distributed from south to north of the Ivory Coast showed that the phenology of assumed migratory activity in D. voelkeri Schmidt differs with latitude and may be correlated with particular types of weather; stainer migrations taking place during the warm, wet and sunny part of the year. The whole life cycle of the insects as well as their flight activity occur under these climatic conditions, prevailing in a belt of 600-900 km width, situated immediately to the south of the Inter-Tropical Front. Colonisation of newly available habitats is thus only possible when climatic factors allow: (i), migratory flight activity and (ii), survival in the colonised area. A close examination of the timing of both migrations in the two main species, D. voelkeri and D. mehoderes Karsch, and of annual movements of the I.T.F. leads to the only logical hypothesis that the transportation of migrating insects is effected by atmospheric convergence, prevailing wind currents and air mass displacements. Introduction Migration of adults of a new generation from one breeding site to another is an important feature of the biology of many insect species (Southwood, 1960; Johnson, 1969; Bowden, 1973; Dingle, 1974) and migrants must therefore be considered as active colonisers of every potential habitat, and not just as individuals leaving an unsuitable environment (Dingle, 1972).

It is an evolutionary strategy to ensure the survival of neonates. Obligate dia- pause occurs in every gestation of some species, while facultative diapause ensues in others, associated with metabolic stress, usually lactation. The onset, maintenance and escape from diapause are regulated by cascades of environmental, hypophyseal, ovarian and uterine mechanisms that vary among species and between the obligate and facultative condition. In the best- known models, the rodents, the uterine environment maintains the embryo in diapause, while estrogens, in combination with growth factors, reinitiate development. Mitotic arrest in the mammalian embryo occurs at the G0 or G1 phase of the cell cycle, and may be due to expression of a specific cell cycle inhibitor. Aposematism, true bugs, Heteroptera, avian predators, mimetic complex Abstract. True bugs are generally considered to be well protected against bird predation. Sympatric species that have similar warning coloration are supposed to form a functional Müllerian mimetic complex avoided by visually oriented avian predators. We have tested whether these assumptions hold true for four species of European red-and-black heteropterans, viz. Pyrrhocoris apterus, Lygaeus equestris, Spilostethus saxatilis, and Graphosoma lineatum. We found that individual species of passerine birds differ in their responses towards particular bug species. Great tits (Parus major) avoided all of them on sight, robins (Erithacus rubecula) and yellowhammers (Emberiza citrinella) discriminated among them and attacked bugs of some species with higher probability than oth- ers, and blackbirds (Turdus merula) frequently attacked bugs of all the tested species. Different predators thus perceive aposematic prey differently, and the extent of Batesian-Müllerian mimetic complexes and relations among the species involved is predator dependent. The first known observation of this phenomenon was in a ruminant, the roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) in 1854, later confirmed in a number of studies in the last century [1]. The phenomenon, now known as embryonic diapause, was then found to be present in a wide range of species and across multiple taxa. Since that time, its biological mystery has attracted studies by scientists from around the globe. The First International Symposium on the topic of embryonic diapause in mammals was held in 1963 at Rice University, Houston, Texas. It resulted in a proceedings volume entitled “Delayed Implantation”, edited by A.C. Enders [2]. The symposium was distinguished by the novel recognition of that era that a wide range of species had been identified with embryonic diapause, including rodents, marsupials and carnivores. The emerging technology of the time, particularly structural approaches, permitted new understanding of the events of diapause and embryo reactivation. The newest methods provided key data on the temporal window of implantation in rodents, introduced new physiological approaches, and illustrated some of the first transmission electron microscope investigations of the blastocyst.
