Theatre Arts holds auditions for musical, play

Theatre Arts announces a call for actors, singers, and dancers for fall shows Tuesday, Aug. 29, in Burtness Theatre from 6 to 10 p.m. Sign up for an audition time on the call board in Room 5, Chandler Hall, before 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29. Performance dates for "Dames at Sea" (musical) are Oct. 24-28, and Nov. 14-18 for "A Doll's House." Those auditioning are asked to prepare the following audition material:

* 16 bars from a song (preferably from a musical). Select audition piece from high point of the song. Our rehearsal pianist will accompany all candidates.

* One to one-and-a-half-minute monologue from realistic play (comedy or drama).

* Dress for a professional audition/interview.

Call back lists will be posted on Burtness and Chandler Hall front doors by 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29. Callbacks Wednesday, Aug. 30: Check the call board in Chandler Hall Wednesday morning for specific parts to

prepare. Callbacks begin on Wednesday for everyone for both shows at 6 p.m. and will run until 10 p.m.

As we welcome new and returning students to the campus, there will be some minor traffic flow changes implemented on campus Friday, Aug.18. The changes will remain in effect through Monday August 21. This is being done to ease the confusion and congestion often experienced with the residence hall opening. For those students and families moving into the residence halls, this information has been comunicated, and maps provided. Please be aware that a few things will be different during this period. It is important that you plan your routes prior to driving, even though you are already familiar with campus.

These changes have been implemented due to the significant impact construction is currently having on campus roads and parking areas. Please plan for the following traffic changes:

In the Wilkerson Complex area:

* There will be no left turn from southward Stanford Road onto eastbound University Avenue.

* There will be no left turn from lot 18 (parking north of the complex) onto southbound Stanford Road.

* Areas have been designated for trucks/trailers/RV's.

* Street parking will be allowed on Stanford Road and University Ave.

* No double parking on streets.

* Additional parking areas have been identified.

In the Johnstone/Fulton/Smith Complex area:

* Areas have been designated for trucks/trailers/RV's.

* Street parking allowed on University Avenue.

* No double parking on streets.

* Additional parking areas have been identified.

In the Walsh Complex area:

* Fifth Avenue North will be converted to a one-way eastbound, from Princeton Street to Harvard Street. * Street parking is allowed on both sides of area streets. * No double parking on streets. * Areas have been designated for trucks/trailers/RV's. * Additional parking areas have been identified.

In the Swanson Hall area: * Cornell Street in front of Swanson Hall will likely not be open for persons moving into Swanson Hall. It is predicted to be open shortly after opening weekend. When it does open, it will remain one-way southbound from University Avenue to Second Avenue.

* Second Avenue is scheduled to be open for the Aug. 18 move-in, providing good weather and no construction

delays. Once open, it will remain one-way eastbound from Cornell Street to Columbia Road.

* Cargo drop-off areas will be located on University Avenue near the Cornell Street intersection, and potentially

on a portion of Cornell Street itself. * If a portion of Cornell Street is used as a cargo drop-off area despite the road being closed, no left turn will be

allowed from Cornell Street onto westbound University Avenue.

* Short term parking will be allowed on University Avenue, Memorial Union loop, Cornell Street west of Hyslop. * No double parking on streets. * Areas have been designated for trucks/trailers/RV's. * Additional parking areas have been identified.

The final examination for Mohamad Hamad, a candidate for the Ph.D. degree with a major in Microbiology, is set for 1 p.m., Aug. 21, in Reed Keller 1350, Ed James Research, School of Medicine and Health Sciences. The dissertation title is "The Roles of LCRG and LCRV in the Secretion Control of Yops in Yersinia Pestis." Matthew Nilles (Microbiology) is the committee chair. The Summer Events program offers a wide range of activities for the community during the summer months,

such as cultural or athletic events, youth camps or specialized workshops. Events are typically open to the

public.

The Study Abroad Fair is coming Wednesday, Sept. 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the International Centre, 2908 University Ave. If you have ever considered leading a faculty directed study abroad program, a visit to the Study Abroad Fair could be very helpful. Deadline extended for PeopleSoft training survey

We have extended the deadline for campus staff to respond to the PeopleSoft Training Needs Assessment

Survey to Monday, Aug. 22. Please encourage your departmental staff who use the PeopleSoft finance, student

administration, and/or HRMS systems to complete the survey.

Our campus student administration, HRMS and finance system production teams have partnered with the Office

of Workforce Development to assess our campus' PeopleSoft training needs and to assist us with developing an

effective, comprehensive, and efficient training program for campus staff.

Workforce Development has developed an online survey at http://www.conted.und.edu/surveys/survey.php? sid=140

The University Avenue banner has been removed from service due to safety concerns. New options are being

explored, but we do not expect to have any outdoor marketing capabilities this school year. The Memorial Union

has several other options available for departments and student organizations, who wish to publicize their

events inside the building. These options include our internal television network, poster display cases, and new,

Each year in the United States more than a million people are diagnosed with skin cancer. Although it’s not usually deadly, skin cancer can cause serious problems. What’s more, once people develop skin cancer, they are at high risk of developing another, new skin cancer later. Luckily, there are things you can do to protect yourself from the disease. Most forms of skin cancer can be prevented by limiting your exposure to the sun and other sources of ultraviolet light. That doesn’t mean that you have to hide from the sun, but you should: • Stay away from tanning booths and sunlamps; • Limit the time you spend outdoors, particularly at midday; • Wear protective clothing, such as long sleeves and wide-brimmed hats; • Wear sunglasses that block ultraviolet light; • Use sunscreen every day, and make sure it has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15.

Another important step toward protecting yourself from skin cancer involves getting to know your skin and checking regularly for changes. To examine your skin, go into a well-lit room with a full-length mirror and take off all your clothes. Look at the skin everywhere on your body, including areas that never see the sun, such as

the space between your toes. If there are places you cannot see well, such as your back, ask someone you trust

to look for you. Be on the lookout for any unusual skin markings. Note any moles that have changed in size,

texture, color, or shape; or any moles or scabs that continue to bleed or won’t heal. The most common sites for

skin cancer are the areas that get the most sun, namely the head, neck, back, chest, or shoulders. Still, skin

cancer can strike anywhere, so don’t ignore the rest of your body.

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and

melanoma. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common of the skin cancers, but melanoma is the most dangerous.

These cancers tend to look different. Melanomas, for example, are usually brown or black and sometimes look

like or start out as moles (see below, “The ABCs of Melanoma”). Non-melanoma skin cancer may be a little

more difficult to spot than melanoma. These types of cancer can look like firm, pearly or red bumps (sometimes

with a depressed center). They can also cause red or scaly spots that bleed easily. The key is to beware of any

skin changes that don’t heal. If you spot a mole or skin change that you think could be cancerous, have your

doctor look at it.

professionals, such as nurses, dietitians, and respiratory therapists. They are available by phone, anytime, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at no charge to you. To talk to a health coach, call 1-800-658-2750. You can also get information online at www.thedialogcenter.com/bcbsnd.

When trying to spot melanoma, it’s useful to look for the A,B,C’s of melanoma: * A is for asymmetry, meaning that one half of the mole or skin growth doesn't match the other half. * B is for border irregularity. Moles or spots with ragged, notched, or blurred edges are more likely to be cancerous than moles or spots with even edges. * C is for color. Moles with a mix of tan, brown, or black are more likely to be cancerous than ones that are all

one shade. Dashes of red, white, or blue are also cause for concern.

* D is for diameter. Moles or skin growths larger than a pencil eraser are more likely to be cancerous than

smaller ones.

Chester Fritz Library lists library course reserves information

The Chester Fritz Library asks that faculty read the following information about using course reserves during the 2006-07 academic year.

• A course reserve request form should be submitted to the Chester Fritz Library staff at least one week before an assignment is announced to the students at the beginning of the semester. • Materials are processed in the order in which they are received.
