Plan for Springs The population per square mile in Springs is approximately two to six times higher than any other Planning Area1 in East Hampton. Similarly, the number of housing units per square mile in Springs is 1.6 to 2 times higher than all the other Planning Areas. Springs has the lowest number of seasonal homes of all the Planning Areas. Furthermore, Springs contains the largest number of vacant single and separate lots one half acre or less in size of any East Hampton Planning Area. The total potential build-out of Springs is approximately the same as the East Hampton Planning Area, which is approximately three times the area of Springs. Except for Gardiner’s Island, there is no land zoned for A5 Residence and there is little A3 and A2 zoning compared to the other hamlets. Most of the land in Springs was divided during the time immediately following World War II or earlier, into small suburban and urban lots sizes. A few large blocks of undivided land remain today including the woodlands between Red Dirt Road and Accabonac Harbor (including the Town protected Jacob Farm property); the woodlands between Gardiner’s Bay and Springs Fireplace Road (including the Blue Bay Girl Scout Camp); the wetlands and meadows surrounding Accabonac Harbor; the woodlands between Springs Fireplace Rd., Abrahams Path and Accabonac Road.; and a few farm remnants. These areas contribute greatly to the area’s biological diversity by supporting species that would otherwise be absent from such a densely developed residential area. The smaller islands of woodland vegetation located near these large blocks also helps to protect species diversity. -

The book is based upon the author's personal acquaintance with this region, which for thirteen years has been his field for study and recreation. US Naval Plans for War with the United Kingdom in the 1890s: A Compromise between Pragmatism and Theory Michael J. Look for FLA on Facebook and Instagram! December 2016 President’s Message—December 2016 As the Holiday season approaches I reflect on two recent events I experienced on the west coast of Florida. I stood with the d'Amicol family on Seahorse Key dock as they spread David's ashes and said goodbye. David was a huge supporter and advocate for the Cedar Key Light Station and left us well before his time. It was fitting for David to become a part of the island he loved and treas- ured. The next day I was at the Discover the Island event on Egmont Key. We had FLA volunteers drumming up interest and hopefully new members for our organization. The weather was beautiful and turnout was great for the two-day event. True, we didn't get many people actually joining that day but they took away some FLA tokens and one lucky drawing winner received a one-year membership. My reason for talking about these events is one day we said goodbye to a lighthouse friend and I still ask myself who will replace him? The next day, I was part of a group telling visitors about FLA and encouraging them to join and/or buy a license plate. It was interesting to hear folks say they didn't know we exist or how much we support Florida lighthouses. Most came away with a bit more knowledge and hopefully a lot more interest in our organization. I now realize the an- swer to my question just might be one of the people we speak with at our membership-drive events. -

Epilogue 1941—Present By BARBARA LA ROCCO ABOUT A WEEK before A Maritime History of New York was re- leased the United States entered the Second World War. Between Pearl Harbor and VJ-Day, more than three million troops and over 63 million tons of supplies and materials shipped overseas through the Port. The Port of New York, really eleven ports in one, boasted a devel- oped shoreline of over 650 miles comprising the waterfronts of five boroughs of New York City and seven cities on the New Jersey side. The Port included 600 individual ship anchorages, some 1,800 docks, piers, and wharves of every conceivable size which gave access to over a thousand warehouses, and a complex system of car floats, lighters, rail and bridge networks. Over 575 tugboats worked the Port waters. Port operations employed some 25,000 longshoremen and an additional 400,000 other workers.* Ships of every conceivable type were needed for troop transport and supply carriers. On June 6, 1941, the U.S. Coast Guard seized 84 vessels of foreign registry in American ports under the Ship Requisition Act. To meet the demand for ships large numbers of mass-produced freight- ers and transports, called Liberty ships were constructed by a civilian workforce using pre-fabricated parts and the relatively new technique of welding. The Liberty ship, adapted by New York naval architects Gibbs & Cox from an old British tramp ship, was the largest civilian- 262 EPILOGUE 1941 - PRESENT 263 made war ship.
