Issue 763 Part Two: Country Pride Country Aircheck Continues Last Week’S Look at the Reality of Being Openly Gay in the Country Industry
July 6, 2021, Issue 763 Part Two: Country Pride Country Aircheck continues last week’s look at the reality of being openly gay in the country industry. And while acceptance seems to be the rule, exceptions remain. Albright & O’Malley & Brenner’s Jaye Albright came out as transgender more than 25 years ago. (Read the page 1 story in the Nov. 3, 1995 issue of Radio & Records here.) After leaving the Air Force in 1970, Albright began attending a support group and registered for college as a woman but ended up in radio as her male self. Twenty years of “trying to be normal” ended in 1994 at a lunch with Broadcast Programming/ Seattle President Edie Hilliard. “After taking Jaye Albright time to get used to the idea, she showed her compassionate side and decided to approach it all as a marketing problem,” Albright says. “Edie advocated for me with our corporate owners, who proposed setting me up as an independent consultant and funded a relaunch of post-surgery COL Story: Warner/WAR’s Chris Janson (r) with WCOL/ ‘Jaye’ in place of Jay. The entire staff was positive and so helpful. Columbus, OH’s Dan Zuko. “It all worked out for the best, and I am now retired, having reached a level of self-acceptance that has allowed me to open For The Format: Nevertheless, examples up completely about all of the events, people and identities that of bigotry remain and, if not that, fear of have shaped me,” she says. Even with the audience resistance manifesting as business acceptance she’s found, Albright knows concerns. -

Analysis: See Spots Run from Endorsers to Influencers
April 12, 2021, Issue 751 Analysis: See Spots Run The introduction of PPM measurement led to a cardinal rule of programming: Spot-sets are best positioned across quarter- Talkin’ Squad. hour boundaries to offset listening losses. Terms like “bow tie” Amen: Broken (spot blocks straddling :15 and :45 on the hour) and “hourglass” Bow’s Chase Rice (straddling :00 and :30) became standard programming lexicon. (in white) with WQIK/ Extended music sweeps – even entire dayparts or days without Jacksonville’s John commercials – also became part of the PPM programming arsenal. Scott, Toni Foxx and So, what are stations doing now? What’s working, and what isn’t? Brad Thornton (l-r). Country Aircheck analyzed daily Mediabase logs of Country competitors in eight PPM markets on a random Wednesday in February to see when stop-sets ran and how long they were during the midday shift. Of course, some stations may vary placement on different days or may have commercial-free days not represented here. Analysis included Nielsen Persons 25- 54 midday data for the month to see if there were any strategies that seemed to pay off better than others. Though prohibited from revealing the specifics of which stations were analyzed, five are Audacy owned, four are iHeartMedia and the remaining seven From Endorsers To Influencers represent one owner each. According to BigCommerce.com, the past five years brought The most popular strategy was a simple “bow tie,” with spots a boom in brands utilizing social media influencers. From an airing around :15 and :45 every hour and no extended music ancillary marketing tactic to a $5-10 billion dollar industry, sweeps. -

August 9, 2021, Issue 768 Hybrid WFH Plans Begin To Variant A not-so-funny thing happened on the way to the pandemic’s end: it didn’t, and the country business is responding accordingly. In the first of a two-part look at the evolving work environment, Country Aircheck reached out to decision makers at an unscientific sampling of companies and stations for an overview of how they are planning for, or adjusting plans for, working in-office. (Next week’s story will focus on a broader survey of industrywide views; take it here.) Hybrid Vigor: Across company sizes and types whose executives replied, only 5% are fully back in the office, 30% remain in work-from-home mode and 65% are in a hybrid arrangement. Rising COVID cases and the Delta variant seem to be shifting views, however. “There’s more caution and it’s coming up on every other phone call at this point,” says one label executive who declined to be named. “It’s frustrating because we thought after the shot this would all go away.” (Ed. Note: The vast majority of individuals contacted for this story declined attribution citing the need to not publicly speak for parent companies.) Plaque Stage: RCA’s Chris Young is surprised backstage Triple Tigers President Norbert Nix echoes at the Opry with a plaque commemorating more than the sentiments of many who were hoping for four billion Pandora streams by the company’s Beville Dunkerley (l) and Alina Thompson. Norbert Nix more face time with coworkers. “We have had some smaller staff meetings, and it is evident that in person human interaction has been sorely missed and is very necessary,” he says.
