I make about $60,000 a year, but it's a real struggle just to keep my head above water financially. My checking account is always over- drawn, and I don't know where to start in catching up. Can you help? Gail Dear Gail, Trust me, I know it can be scary. But the easiest way to attack this thing is by taking one slow, sure step at a time. Try not to let worry consume you in the process, either. First, sit down, take a deep breath, and open all the unopened bills. Throw away any duplicates, and keep only the most recent statements and notices. The unknown is always scarier than the known, so facing the bills and cutting that stack in half right off the bat will help reduce a lot of your initial anxiety. Next, let's start a debt snowball. List all the debts you owe, from smallest to largest, making one column for the payoff balance, one column for the amount you need to get current on that debt, and one column for the single payment amount when you get current. Total each column - the payoff balance, the amount to get current, and the single payment. I promise it won't be as bad as you think. Finally, make a monthly budg- et. Prioritize your needs, starting with food, utilities, house pay- ments and transportation. When it comes to your debts, pay as much as you can on the smallest one The Patriot - 540-808-3949 while making minimum pay- ments on all the others. You can do this, Gail. If you'll follow my plan, I think you'll see improvement in several areas of your life and you'll feel good about the progress you're making, too! -Dave Dear Dave, My mom is 73 years old, and she's dealing with depression and a few other mental issues. Is it too late for her to get long-term care insurance? Julie Dear Julie, It wouldn't be a big problem if she were healthy. But given her age, and the other struggles you mentioned, I'd check with a good insurance broker to see what's out there for her. In the insurance world they call this "making a market." Will they be able to find a company that will write her in that situation? I can't give you an accurate answer off the top of my head, because this is a difficult thing. It would probably depend on things like the extent of her depression, how long it's been manifested, and what it has done in her life. That's one of the reasons I'm advising you to see an insurance broker. A broker doesn't represent just one company; they represent several companies. They can shop around in a given situation, and find someone to write some- thing you might not get written otherwise. They can also shop around for the best possible price, and you get the efficiencies of the marketplace working for you. God bless you both, Julie. -Dave

Young George was Richmond/Fredericksburg 800- six years old in 1738 when his family moved to a farm in Stafford County, Virginia. Called the Home Farm by the Washingtons, it later came to be known as Ferry Farm because people crossed the Rappahannock River on a ferry from the farm to the town of Fredericksburg. The Washingtons did not own or operate the ferry but used it frequently to get to and from town. Some of the best- known stories about young George, including barking one of his father's prized cherry trees which led eventually to its being cut down, occurred at this proper- ty. Also the tossing of the silver dollar across the river took place in this area. The land which became Ferry Farm has a long and interesting history. Archaeological finds include a spear point made over 10,000 years ago. The Ferry Farm was finally added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. A more complete and detailed study of this property would prove very interesting to any history lover, and a visit would be an added bonus. Ms. Farmer closed the program by reviewing a few of the rules included in "George Washington's Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation." There were 110 of these rules published. #1 stated: "Every action done in company ought to be done with some sign of respect to those that are pres- ent." #4 said: "In the presence of others, sing not to yourself with a humming noise, nor drum with your fingers or feet." These rules still apply to proper behavior in polite company to this day. Sandra Hardymon served as hostess at the meeting. Members attending were Melody Adkins, Reba Crawford, Frances Davis, Elinor Farmer, Carla Hicks, Sandra Hardymon, Annie Laurie James, Sheila Nelson, Carol Smith, and Esther "Joey" Ward. The next meeting of the chapter will be at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 6 at the Ratcliffe Transportation Museum with Betty Kirkner as speaker and Carol Smith as hostess. He's a little small, but he is very quick, and on film appears to be an accomplished duel threat quarterback. His speed is very impressive. Ellis is a 3-star recruit that was also offered by Maryland, Syracuse, Rutgers, Temple, and Wake Forest. It's a good sign for the Hokies to beat Maryland on a recruit from Owings Mills because the Terps dominated that area last recruiting season, but maybe Tech is in the process of launching a counter attack.

Since many Virginia anglers target largemouth bass, and fish larger than 15 inches are considered "preferred" nationwide; the following summa- ry contains information about bass over 15 inches (preferred size). Relative stock density of preferred fish (RSD-P below) is the pro- portion of bass in a population over eight inches (stock size or recruits) that are also at least 15 inches. Thus, this index describes the size structure of the population and the bigger the number, the higher the percentage of big bass (>15 inches) in the population. Catch-per- unit-effort of preferred fish (CPUE-P below) is a measure of how many bass over 15 inches are collected by biologists during a set unit of effort (in this case, 1-hour of electrofishing). Thus, the higher the number, the more abundant big bass were during the sample. Several factors can bias these data (e.g., weather conditions, fish behavior), but samples were conducted with efforts to minimize these biases. The following is a summary of these data with lakes ranked by CPUE-P and divided into the four management regions of the state. Those lakes ranked at the top of the table will provide excel- lent opportunities for anglers to catch quality largemouth bass. You might notice that some of the large reservoirs are ranked lower than you might expect. Smaller reservoirs normally have higher sampling efficiency and will thus rank higher based on this evaluation. This is a guide for anglers to use and not necessarily the entire picture of Virginia bass fisheries but it will provide a good place to start. We hope you find this useful.
