Glasgow International 4 April – 21 April 2014

Highlights for the 2014 Festival will include:

 MAJOR NEW COMMISSIONS by critically acclaimed international and local artists including BEDWYR WILLIAMS, ALEKSANDRA DOMANOVIC, SUE TOMPKINS and SIMON MARTIN.

 A PROGRAMME FOR THE YEAR OF HOMECOMING SCOTLAND 2014 which will include off-site projects by JORDAN WOLFSON, CHARLOTTE PRODGER and AVERY SINGER.

 MORE THAN 50 ADDITIONAL SOLO AND GROUP EXHIBITIONS by the best up-and-coming Glaswegian, Scottish, UK and international artists at diverse permanent, temporary, converted and unexpected venues across the city.

 NEW VISION FOR THE FESTIVAL under the Direction of Sarah McCrory including a new visual identity for Glasgow International in 2014.

Glasgow International is delighted to announce details of the programme for its 6th edition opening on 4 April 2014. This innovative model of a contemporary art Festival includes a programme comprised of curated commissions and projects by new Director for 2014, Sarah McCrory as well as exhibitions and events at over 40 spaces across the city of Glasgow. Showcasing work by more than 80 of the best local and international artists, the Festival aims to highlight artists whose practices engage in essential and critical contemporary art discourse.

More than 90% of the work included in the 18-day Festival will be new or previously unseen in the UK and will be presented in a range of media and disciplines such as installation, sculpture, performance, film, stand-up comedy, collage, ceramics, photography and painting.

Now in its sixth year, Glasgow International has a legacy of producing some of the most exciting new contemporary art commissions, recognising emerging talent and tracing the careers of artists over multiple editions. The 2014 Festival will further showcase Glasgow as one of the world’s most important centres for the production and display of contemporary visual art.

SOLO PRESENTATIONS Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art is delighted to exciting new commissions by leading local and international artists. These include Serbian artist ALEKSANDRA DOMANOVIC’S first major solo show within an institution, including sculpture and film works at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA). British artist SIMON MARTIN will produce a series of new works responding to aspects of the collection of Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Museum.

Additional new commissions will include work by German, Glasgow based artist MICHAEL STUMPF (Glasgow School of Art.); Canadian artist GARETH MOORE (Glasgow Sculpture Studio); Puerto Rican artist BEATRIZ SANTIAGO MUNOZ (Transmission); Palestinian artist KHALED HOURANI (CCA) and American artist ANNE COLLIER (The Modern Institute).

PERFORMANCE AND PARTICIPATION The programme for the Festival will feature a strong selection of artists whose practice includes an element of performance. Glasgow based artist SUE TOMPKINS will create an exhibition and new performance for the fourth floor in GoMA drawing from a range of literary and art historical movements such as Concrete Poetry and typewriter art.

Following his success representing Wales at the 2013 Venice Biennale, BEDWYR WILLIAMS will create a solo exhibition of new work for Tramway's main exhibition space. Williams’ practice includes performance, sculpture, painting, posters and photography and often draws on his own experiences, using humour to reveal both his and our own complex neurosis. American artist MICHAEL SMITH will present a film installation across two of Tramway's spaces, including new work as well as highlights Glasgow International from his influential practice spanning over 30 years. everyday life. To coincide with these projects, the Festival will present a Café Programme at Tramway which will showcase a number of young and emerging artists with new performance commissions and screenings.

A major commission for the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme which will see a disused site nearby to the Emirates Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in the east end of Glasgow transformed by a public artwork will also be part of Glasgow International. The work entitled MAKING THE MOST OF DALMARNOCK, which is promoted by VELOCITY, Create London, architects Assemble and Scottish artist Ruth Ewan will work with local communities in Dalmarnock to design and construct a permanent outdoor learning and play area.

The Festival will also include an inter-disciplinary exhibition including performance work by CLAUDIA COMTE (David Dale Gallery); BROTH MIX a mixed media gallery and creative hub combining food, art and discussion (Open Jar) and an off-site exhibition including a new body of paintings by British artist ALISTAIR FROST which will include a functioning nail-bar that will allow visitors to have designs created by the artist painted on their nails through the Festival (Mary Mary).

THE YEAR OF HOMECOMING SCOTLAND 2014 PROGRAMME In partnership with the year of Homecoming Scotland 2014, the Festival will include a programme of innovative projects taking place across unique venues in Glasgow, uncovering a wealth of the city’s built not traditionally used to show contemporary art. Projects include a unique installation by American artist JORDAN WOLFSON, comprising a selection of films spanning the ten years of his groundbreaking career and the first exhibition in the UK of work by recently deceased Brazilian artist HUDINILSON JNR whose practice included Xerox, performance and graffiti. An exhibition by emerging American artist AVERY SINGER will include representations of idealised sculptures and monuments using Google Sketchup.

Glasgow based artist CHARLOTTE PRODGER, will present an exhibition of new work for the 2014 Festival in Bridgeton in the east of Glasgow which will follow from the success of her exhibition for the 2012 Festival at CCA. Prodger works across 16mm film, spoken word, text, video and is currently nominated for the Jarman Award. British artists ANTHEA HAMILTON AND NICHOLAS BYRNE will present a reprise of their 2012 sculptural installation work referencing the famous LOVE sculpture by Robert Indiana, amongst other inflatable works. Initially shown as part of the cultural Olympiad, these works will travel to Govanhill Baths (built in 1914) currently repurposed as a community centre.

GROUP EXHIBITIONS The 2014 Festival will feature a range of additional group exhibitions showcasing Glasgow based and international artists. Glasgow studio space WASPS will present a show entitled THE SECOND LIFE OF SCULPTURE in the magnificent nearly 150 year old Hall at the Briggait which will take the form of a large-scale exhibition of sculpture drawing inspiration from the Empire Exhibitions of the 18th and 19th Centuries. Studio Warehouse SWG3 will present a group exhibition entitled LA CHOSE ENCADREE which will focus on artworks which jump out of their frame.

OPEN GLASGOW An initiative as part of the Festival which presents ambitious and imaginative artists’ projects conceived specifically for the city during the Festival. Highlights for Open Glasgow for the 2014 Festival will include LAURA ALDRIDGE and ANNA MAYER’s pit firing project, the publication of the third volume of THE BURNING SAND, a new art magazine from Glasgow, ‘GYMNASIA’, a performative exhibition initiated by CRAIG MULHOLLAND and a lecture performance by FIONA JARDINE.

EVENTS

A diverse line-up of events will accompany the 2014 programme including talks, screenings and performances. Further details will be announced in early 2014.

The new website for the Festival which will include the full programme of events will go live in November 2013 (glasgowinternational.org).

 Taking place every other year, and combining some of the characteristics of a conventional arts ‘biennial’ with a more event-based experience, Glasgow International is a unique event in the international calendar with one of the most groundbreaking and dynamic presentations of contemporary visual arts practice. GI is a unique event that offers both globally recognised and emerging Glasgow-based artists across the spectrum of the city’s art scene a platform to show new work to both national and international audiences while also introducing the work of important international artists. Since its inception in 2005 the Festival has brought together the key organisations in Glasgow’s diverse artistic community, presenting unique events and special commissions rooted in the achievements of the local artistic community, while drawing on important international developments in contemporary art.

Sarah McCrory has spent the last two years as curator of Frieze Foundation, a non- profit organization responsible for the curated program of Frieze Art Fair including Frieze Projects and Film. She played an instrumental role in Frieze Projects East, which involved the production of six new public art projects situated throughout the Olympic host boroughs of East London as part of the London 2012 Festival. Prior to joining the Frieze Foundation McCrory was co-curator of Studio Voltaire, London.

(v) THE YEAR OF HOMECOMING SCOTLAND 2014 -- providing a year- long programme of events alongside the Ryder Cup and Commonwealth Games.
