He played a major role in developing and mainstreaming a soil-centric approach to increasing food production that conserves natural resources and mitigates climate change. Three separate United Nations Climate Change Conferences have adopted his strategy of restoring soil health as a means to sequestering carbon. In 2007, he was among those recognised with a Nobel Peace Prize Certificate for his contributions to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports, when the IPCC was named co-recipient of the Nobel Prize. Key Points 1/2 Objective: The World Food Prize is the foremost international honor recognizing the achievements of individuals who have advanced human development by improving the quality, quantity or availability of food in the world. Field Covered: It is an annual award that recognizes contributions in any field involved in the world food supply including plant, animal and soil science; food science and technology; nutrition, rural development, etc. Eligibility: It is open for any individual without regard to race, religion, nationality or political beliefs. Cash Prize: In addition to the cash award of $2,50,000, the laureate receives a sculpture designed by the noted artist and designer, Saul Bass. Presentation of the Award: The Prize is presented each October on or around UN World Food Day (16th October). It is presented by the World Food Prize Foundation which has over 80 companies, individuals, etc. as donors. The World Food Prize Foundation is located in Des Moines, USA. Background: Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for his work in global agriculture, conceived the Prize. He is also known as the Father of the Green Revolution. The World Food Prize was created in 1986 with sponsorship by General Foods Corporation. It is also known as the "Nobel Prize for Food and Agriculture". Dr. M.S. Unfortunately, some of the most agriculturally driven countries lack sustainable practices in growing or harvesting food, thus leading to a degradation of the environment, the quality of the harvest, and the amount of yield. The way that Nigerian agriculture and the country demographics function is closely related to sustainability problems that the country faces. With the change from current agricultural operations to more reliable, environmentally friendly, and more sustainable methods, these problems could be solved over time. Nigeria is in Africa and is the 7th most populated country on Earth with 190.9 million citizens. Population increases bring food security related issues (Ufiobor, 2017, p. 11). The population is 50.2% urban. Nigeria, a federation, is lead by a democratically elected president. It shares political borders with Chad, Cameroon, Niger, and the Republic of Benin, and borders water bodies including Lake Chad, the Gulf of Guinea (Atlantic Ocean), the Niger River, and River Benue. Nigeria has topographical highlands and plateaus, found in the African tropics. Four climate types influence Nigeria (“Geography of Nigeria”, 2018). The monsoon climate covers southern Nigeria, accessing water from the ocean and providing 4000 millimeters of rainfall annually. The temperature is consistently 27˚C. The tropical savanna climate covers most of Nigeria and borders the monsoon climate. Temperatures will dip to 18˚C, but can reach 37˚C.

The project made me very aware of the fact that people in undeveloped countries suffer from lack of food; surprisingly and despite the rise in obesity, developed countries, like the United States, have people suffering from hunger and malnutrition too. Awareness of the problem is a key to the future. It is important to take in our surroundings and be able to process what is going on around us both locally and globally. The EarthBox for World Food Day Project increased my awareness of hunger and encouraged me to be part of the solution. On October 16, World Food Day is observed internationally to promote the awareness of inadequate food and nutrition resources around the world and the hunger it causes. It is not hard to imagine hunger. Look around you. Think of eight people you know. Statistics say that one in every eight people worldwide is suffering from malnutrition. They might have the appearance of a well fed person, but they are suffering from not having the proper nutrients for the body to operate, or supply itself properly.
