Unfortunately, some of the most agriculturally driven countries lack sustainable practices in growing or harvesting food, thus leading to a degradation of the environment, the quality of the harvest, and the amount of yield. The way that Nigerian agriculture and the country demographics function is closely related to sustainability problems that the country faces. With the change from current agricultural operations to more reliable, environmentally friendly, and more sustainable methods, these problems could be solved over time. Nigeria is in Africa and is the 7th most populated country on Earth with 190.9 million citizens. Population increases bring food security related issues (Ufiobor, 2017, p. 11). The population is 50.2% urban. Nigeria, a federation, is lead by a democratically elected president. It shares political borders with Chad, Cameroon, Niger, and the Republic of Benin, and borders water bodies including Lake Chad, the Gulf of Guinea (Atlantic Ocean), the Niger River, and River Benue. Nigeria has topographical highlands and plateaus, found in the African tropics. Four climate types influence Nigeria (“Geography of Nigeria”, 2018). The monsoon climate covers southern Nigeria, accessing water from the ocean and providing 4000 millimeters of rainfall annually. The temperature is consistently 27˚C. The tropical savanna climate covers most of Nigeria and borders the monsoon climate. Temperatures will dip to 18˚C, but can reach 37˚C. -

Quinn, President of the World Food Prize, announced that the 2016 World Food Prize will be awarded to three International Potato Center (CIP) Scientists, Drs. Jan Low, Maria Andrade, and Robert Mwanga and HarvestPlus’ Dr. Howarth Bouis in recognition of their combined success in improving nutrition and health through biofortified crops. At the 2016 World Food Prize Laureate Announcement Ceremony held at the U.S. State Department Ambassador Quinn noted that “It is particularly poignant that among our 2016 recipients are two African scientists and two women scientists.” The four World Food Prize Laureates will share the $250,000 prize equally. The World Food Prize, sometimes referred to as “the Nobel Prize for Food and Agriculture”, is the most prominent global award for individuals whose breakthrough achievements alleviate hunger and promote global food security. M.G. College Udaipur (Rajasthan) India Email: [email protected] Abstract: An individual is a social being and needs economic welfare. A healthy society in turn, needs healthy and literate individuals. In order to make literacy worthwhile, it must be functional. Functional literacy signifies the ability of a person to discharge his economic, social and civic duties in an efficient manner. The word 'Literacy' means an ability to read and write. The level of development becomes higher if the population of the country is educated and firstly literate. Education permits a higher degree of social mobility the ability to achieve a higher social level. This paper is an effort to analyze the position of literacy in 11 tehsils of Udaipur district at social level, gender level with the statistical techniques based on census data of 2011. The purpose of the paper is to find out what are the causes of social and gender disparity in literacy regarding the 11 tehsils of Udaipur district and the attempts that can be inculcated to make the females of the district and the social groups more literate. FROM OUR PRESIDENT... Dear Supporters of Asia Initiatives, Here are 4 reasons why Asia Initiatives is laser focused on social capital as a lever to empower communities: 1. Every individual in the world has social capital that can help develop his or her community. Our current financial system fails to recognize this tremendous asset. Our methodology of Social Capital Credits enables every one to realize their own potential. 2. Local people know their needs better than any outside experts. Over the past 60 years, too much international aid has been wasted trying to bring to communities what experts thought they needed. These projects usually dry up as soon as the money does. We believe that local people should express their own choices on the what, when and how of development. 3. All the knowledge and the work about the poor communities should be co-produced with them. 4. Dignity is the most important part of development. Giving someone charity is not only unsustainable but robs people of that dignity. The implementation process of SoCCs starts with SoCCratic dialogues in which people envision a better future for and by themselves- often for the first time ever! In 2016 SoCCs were scaled-up in eight existing projects in four countries where initiation projects had shown strong results, and closed in two sites where the pilots did not work well for various reasons. -

VIEWPOINT lobalizing Architectural G Education in Japan By Geeta MEHTA Author Geeta MEHTA Like other professionals, architects today work in the increasingly global world. Exciting opportunities for building and design in the medium and long term are increasing in the rapidly urbanizing countries of China, India and the Middle East. Architects are working in global practices in cross-cultural teams like never before. While Japanese design, sense of space, and attention to detail in traditional as well as contemporary architecture are admired around the world, architectural practice and the building industry have historically evolved here in a way unique to Japan. This article discusses the features of architectural practice in Japan that are different from those of other countries, and examines the opportunities in preparing Japanese students for the global opportunities today. Architecture straddles the disciplines of social sciences, engineer- ished product, and takes legal responsibility for it. However, in ing and art, and is best when it succeeds on all three fronts. The project was conducted by Suhail Qureshi( Empaneled designer) with the O/o, D C (Handicraft), Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India. During this 5 months workshop at khemli , Udaipur ,from 27th sept. 2015 - 26th Feb.2016, 25 prototypes with new designs were developed. The program was organized by Export promotion council of Handicrafts, New Delhi, working for the promotion of art & culture of the society and the overall Upliftment of the underprivileged. From the survey, it was established that the most of the artisans made products for their personal use, but with very limited designs.
