Kim, the family’s mother and wife, was diagnosed with breast cancer. That is never a good situation but it was made even more complicated by the family’s circumstances. Originally from Chicago, the plan was for Kim and sons Ryan and Tanner to live in Ann Arbor while father Craig was going to remain in Chicago and work during the week and drive to Ann Arbor to spend weekends with his family. The reason for the move was that Ryan made the USA National Team Development Program U17 team. They opted not to have Ryan move to Ann Arbor alone and stay with a billet family because he and Tanner, who is 9, are close and the family wanted them to remain a big part of each others lives. The Hartmans are even billeting one of Ryan’s teammates at their Ann Arbor resi - dence. Kim ultimately had to undergo a double mastectomy and had to do it without the familiar home their family had built for themselves.
