In past years Miss Katherine Burns, retired Journalism teacher, supervised the publication of the school annual. She was respon­ sible for encouraging and inspiring her students to noble deeds. This was reflected in school publications, so admirably produced under her leadership. It is our hope to emulate the truths and stand­ ards taught by Miss Burns in the presentation of this annual. Closely associated with Miss Burns, in the publication of the school annual, was Mr. George F. Neeb, social science instructor. To him we are greatly indebted for giving unstintingly of his time and numerous suggestions in the preparation of this work. More specifically, he supervised the senior photos. The staff likewise acknowledges the invaluable services afforded by our beloved vice-principal, Miss Blanche Kern. Marked as the school of the COWBOYS the senior class of West High School decided to carry out the theme of the traditional cowboy, so vital a symbol of the Hilltop school. DEDICATION IN appreciation of the fine help and guid­ ance given us, during his first year as principal of West Senior High School, we, the class of nineteen thirty-eight, gratefully dedicate this annual to Dr. H. H. Reighley. It was he who was largely instrumental in elevating the standards of our school on a par with the foremost schools of the country—for which we are sincerely thankful. HAUNTZ—Chai : •\.j?.-\ :-- ^€Ij JC*J WEST HIGH STADIUM On October 15, 1937, a long awaited occasion took place when the new sixty thousand dollar stadium was dedicated with an impressive ceremony. The stadium, which has long been the hope and dream of many, was at last a reality. Many imoortant persons were present including the guest of honor, Otto H. Magly. Dwight Fisher, Judge Cecil Randall, Ray Hauntz, Edward Kromer and Jack H. LeVeck also had important parts in the dedication ceremonies. The athletic unit was named Magly Field. It is the largest school stadium in the city with a total length of 306 feet and a seating capacity of 3,300. It is 42 feet 6 inches wide and 20 feet high. It is of reinforced concrete with seats of California Redwood.     THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 12, No. 1 (1990) DAYTON PLAYED LARGE FOUNDING ROLE IN NFL By Ritter Collett and Steve Presar Originally published in the Dayton Daily News The enthusiasm of Dayton football fans is split between the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals. But if you turn the clock back 70 football seasons, our town had a pro team before Paul Brown established either current franchise. The Dayton Triangles of long ago were a charter member of the grouping that became the National Football League. The first league game was played here and Lou Partlow of the Triangles scored the NFL's first touchdown. The roots of pro football are firmly embedded in Ohio, although Dayton's role is generally less recognized that that of the northeastern area of the state. In the 1913-20 era, immediately before the founding of the NFL, semi-pro teams were organized around neighborhoods or athletic clubs in this part of the country. The players worked at their regular jobs during the week and usually practiced two or three evenings before picking up extra income by playing weekend games. Much has been written about early semi-pro teams in Canton, Massillon and Akron. But there was a team developing along those same lines in southwest Ohio. It became very successful and played a role in establishing what is now the NFL. By 1910, there were a number of semi-pro and amateur teams competing against each other in Dayton. The Dayton Daily News of that period refers to Wolverines, Miamis, McKinleys, Westwoods, Oxfords, Republics and Nationals who played in parks around the city, most of which are now gone.

    To My Fellow Hobbyists, 2010. Sounds almost like the title of a comic book I read as a kid. As we embark on a new decade, our entire staff at Huggins and Scott is looking forward to working with all of you to make this hobby we all love more enjoyable for everyone. With 2009 behind us, our plans for the upcoming year include a few changes requested by many of our bidders and consignors. First we are planning to run 5 auctions in 2010. They will end on the last Wednesday and Thursday of every odd month. Our May and September auctions will be a new format with many items that will sell in the $200-$500 range. Our March, July and November auctions will focus more on larger lots. For 2009 we tried a new style buyers premium scale for our 4 auctions. After reviewing all the feedback and results, we have decided this idea may have been ahead of its time, so for now we are returning to the industry standard of one buyers premium for all items--not to say we would be opposed to revisiting this concept in the future. Finally, with the National Convention in our hometown this year, we are planning several special promotions around the show for all our clients. Make sure you put the National in Baltimore on your schedule this summer, and we hope to meet and greet many of you at the show.     THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 10, No. 4 (1988) GEORGE ROUDEBUSH ROUDEBUSH’S PASSES CHANGED THE GAME OF FOOTBALL By Matt Fenn, CAC Journal Editor Some say Knute Rockne of Notre Dame invented the forward pass. Some will say that, well, maybe he didn’t invent the pass but he certainly was the first to effectively use it as a weapon on the gridiron. Oh, it makes a nice story...Rockne and Gus Dorais spending a summer at Cedar Point practicing hours on end so they could surprise Army with something new -- the forward pass. The story has been repeated so often it has become legend. The only problem is, it’s not exactly true. The man who should have gotten credit for revolutionizing the game was a Denison University sophomore halfback named George M. Roudebush. Roudebush, a member of the Cleveland Athletic Club since 1940, is today a counsel with the law firm of Arter & Hadden, in the Huntington Building. He is 93 years old – but don’t let his age fool you. He is spry, alert, witty, at his desk every day, handling details for a number of clients. And he remembers everything. He can cite dates, names, nicknames, figures, events, conversations that took place scores of years ago. He remembers very well 1912, which was one year before they began fitting Rockne for his cloak of immortality. Because it was in the season of 1912 that George Roudebush and Denison U. used the forward pass to change a very ordinary team to a juggernaut. In its first three games, Denison had scored only 19 points.
