Let me be open to receive the gifts you have to offer through the spiritual disciplines of Lent: gifts of correction, encouragement, obedience, simplicity and clarity. 2 Corinthians 5:20-6:10 Who are we that you would call us to act as Christ’s ambassadors? Isn’t that a high ranking for ordinary disciples like us? Don’t we need years of experience and expertise to qualify for the title – ‘ambassadors’? We know that Jesus called ordinary folk to follow, and that he handed to them the authority to continue his mission and ministry. This is part of the inheritance of faith handed to us, and this day we are humbled and amazed that you, O God, would choose us. So may we, by our lives, entreat all around us to the reconciliation that is the way of Christ. Amen.

Philippians 3:17-4:1 How confused we are, Author of Life, between earthly and heavenly things. Paul speaks of those with earthly minds whose god is their belly; whose end is destruction. It has also been said that we can be so heavenly minded that we’re no earthly good. Our lives are largely lived somewhere in-between; unwilling to live only for our glory, unable to live only for yours. In Christ alone we trust to sweep away our confusion, and to show us our true purpose as salt and light in the world. Amen. P RAYER S

There is part of us that believes, Faithful God, that in order to thrive we must get ahead of those around us, lest they hold us back or pull us down into the mire. There is part of us that wants success, even if we have to step on a few people to get it, and then to keep everything that comes our way to ourselves. The parable we read speaks to us not so much about how to get into heaven, through last-minute generous acts, but how to escape a living hell, a way of life that makes you weep. You are generosity. You are constantly reaching out. P RAYER S

Luke 5: 12-16 Holy Wisdom, you are showing us that ‘action’ and ‘contemplation’ are not alternatives, but at the heart of what it means to live as a disciple. When we invest deeply in prayer, the more moved we become to act against violence, and destruction and injustice. When we invest deeply in acting for peace, we are driven to pray, to join our hearts, minds and bodies to the source of all life and all love. In our prayer, in our action, lead us to radical faith - to the root of the matter – that we may follow Jesus with all that we are and all that we have. Amen. P RAYER S
