The true meaning of green day’s song: holiday in the social, political and economic context. Yogyakarta: English Language Education Study Program, Department of Language and Arts Education, Faculty of Teachers Training and Education. Sanata Dharma University. Power is one of the most influential things to do an action. Powerful people often use their power to achieve goals in order to fulfill their interests. It is the true meaning of Green Day’s song: Holiday, which was written by the singer, Billie Joe Armstrong. Amrstrong criticizes the policy of Iraq invasion as well as protesting the American who supported the invasion. The objective of this study is to reveal the textual and true meaning of Green Day’s Holiday song lyric. There are two formulated problems in this study, i.e “What is the textual meaning of song?” and “What is the true meaning of the song in the social, political and economic context?” This is a qualitative study. The primary data were taken from the song lyric of Green Day’s Holiday which is taken from the album American Idiot, while the secondary data were taken from other relevant sources, such as related books, journals, and the internet. The approach used in this research is Marxist Criticism Approach. The theory used is the theory of poetry. There are two conclusions in this study. The first finding is the textual meaning of Holiday which is about war that occurs as the result of self-oriented dictator policies, the war-minded citizens and the hypocritical supports given by the people to the leader. The second is the true meaning of the song lyric in the social, political and economic context at the time the song was written. After analyzing the song, the researcher reveals the true rationale of the Iraq invasion and the impacts of the invasion in social, political and economical life of the Americans as well as the Iraqi people. Keywords: Holiday, textual meaning, literal meaning, Iraq invasion, 9/11. vi PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI ABSTRAK Jiwandana, Bondan. (2017). The true meaning of green day’s song: holiday in the social, political and economic context. Yogyakarta: English Language Education Study Program, Department of Language and Arts Education, Faculty of Teachers Training and Education. Sanata Dharma University. Keywords: Holiday, arti tekstual, arti sebenarnya, penyerangan Irak, 9/11. vii PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Finishing this paper is a dream comes true for me. PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

DIY Democracy 23 DIY Democracy: The Direct Action Politics of U.S. Punk Collectives Dawson Barrett Somewhere between the distanced slogans and abstract calls to arms, we . discovered through Gilman a way to give our politics some application in our actual lives. Mike K., 924 Gilman Street One of the ideas behind ABC is breaking down the barriers between bands and people and making everyone equal. There is no Us and Them. Chris Boarts-Larson, ABC No Rio Kurt Cobain once told an interviewer, “punk rock should mean freedom.”1 The Nirvana singer was arguing that punk, as an idea, had the potential to tran- scend the boundaries of any particular sound or style, allowing musicians an enormous degree of artistic autonomy. But while punk music has often served as a platform for creative expression and symbolic protest, its libratory potential stems from a more fundamental source. Punk, at its core, is a form of direct action. Instead of petitioning the powerful for inclusion, the punk movement has built its own elaborate network of counter-institutions, including music venues, media, record labels, and distributors. These structures have operated most notably as cultural and economic alternatives to the corporate entertainment industry, and, as such, they should also be understood as sites of resistance to the privatizing 0026-3079/2013/5202-023$2.50/0 American Studies, 52:2 (2013): 23-42 23 24 Dawson Barrett agenda of neo-liberalism. For although certain elements of punk have occasion- ally proven marketable on a large scale, the movement itself has been an intense thirty-year struggle to maintain autonomous cultural spaces.2 When punk emerged in the mid-1970s, it quickly became a subject of in- terest to activists and scholars who saw in it the potential seeds of a new social movement.

  • Renoff, Greg. Van Halen Rising: How a Southern California Backyard Party Band Saved Heavy Metal
Book Reviews Renoff, Greg. Van Halen Rising: How a Southern California Backyard Party Band Saved Heavy Metal. Toronto: ECW Press, 2015. 272 Pp. Greg Renoff makes significant contributions to several historical subfields with his second book, Van Halen Rising. This well-written and well-researched book focuses on the band’s rarely discussed journey during the 1970s from the keg party and dive bar circuits of suburban Los Angeles to the top of the popular music charts. Renoff constructs a narrative that is exciting and accessible, yet also scholarly. He builds it on a foundation of oral history interviews he conducted with dozens of people familiar with the band’s early years: friends, fans, members of rival bands, concert promoters, and music industry insiders. The result is a unique work of scholarship that converges with not only the popular memoirs of David Lee Roth and Gene Simmons, but also the historiographies of suburbanization, working class culture, and the Sunbelt. For scholars of business history, Renoff provides invaluable insight into the microeconomics of the late 20th century music industry through the prism of Van Halen. When Warner Brothers released Van Halen’s self-titled debut album in February 1978, Renoff asserts, heavy metal’s appeal had been fading for several years. Its best-known acts from earlier in the decade, such as Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, and Kiss, were either breaking up or facing declining record sales, and music industry insiders in Los Angeles had deemed the genre passé. The major Hollywood clubs, which served as gateways to record deals, shut out groups such as Van Halen in favor of others with the popular country rock or soft rock sounds, or those who played punk rock, which industry insiders believed would soon be as popular in the United States as it was in Great Britain.

  • Pets Are Popular with U.S. Presidents
Pets Are Popular With U.S. Presidents Most people have heard by now that President-elect Barack Obama promised his two daughters a puppy if he were elected president. Obama called choosing a dog a “major issue” for the new first family. It seems that pets have always been very popular with U.S. presidents. Only two of the 44 presidents -- Chester A. Arthur and Franklin Pierce -- left no record of having pets. Many presidents and their children had dogs and cats in the White House. President and Mrs. Bush have two dogs and a cat living with them -- the dogs are named Barney and Miss Beazley and the cat is India. But there have been many unusual presidential pets as well. President Calvin Coolidge may have had the most pets. NEWS WORD BOX He had a pygmy hippopotamus, six dogs, a bobcat, a goose, a donkey, a cat, two lion cubs, an antelope, and popular issue record wallaby a wallaby. President Herbert Hoover had several dogs pygmy hippopotamus and his son had two pet alligators, which sometimes took walks outside the White House. Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of President John F. Kennedy, had a pony named Macaroni. She would ride Macaroni around the White House grounds. Some pets also worked while at the White House. Pauline the cow was the last cow to live at the White House. She provided milk for President William Taft. To save money during World War I, President Woodrow Wilson brought in a flock of sheep to trim the White House lawn. The flock included a ram named Old Ike.

The treated CDEW can be used as recycled aggregate to replace natural aggregate, which can not only reduce environmental pollution and construction-related resource waste caused by CDEW, but also save natural resources. However, the mechanical properties and durability of Recycled Aggregates Concrete (RAC) are generally worse than that of ordinary concrete. Various fiber or mineral materials are usually used in RAC to improve the mechanical properties and durability of the matrix. In RAC, polypropylene (PP) fiber and steel fiber (SF) are two kinds most commonly used fiber materials, which can enhance the strength and toughness of RAC and compensate the defects of RAC to some extent. In this paper, the literature on PP fiber- and SF-reinforced RAC (FRRAC) is reviewed, with a focus on the consistence, mechanical performance (compressive strength, tensile strength, stress–strain relationship, elastic modulus, and shear strength), durability (water absorption, chloride permeability, carbonation, freeze–thaw cycling, and shrinkage), and microstructure.
