Pura Belpré (1899-1982) is one of the most important public intellectuals in the history of the Puerto Rican diaspora. What made people of African descent support the republican cause? Was their contribution to the independence decisive? Did Afro-descendant women play a key role during that process? Why were the most important Afro-descendant military leaders executed by the Creole forces? What was the fate of those soldiers and their descendants at the end of the war?
