In those years, the Indians spent $414M less in payroll than Boston, which at the start speaks volumes about how well the Indians have been run. Two years ago, they got to the tenth inning of an incredible World Series game 7, in a rain delay. Last October they lost an agonizing 5th game of the ALDS to the Yankees, with Corey Kluber, the best pitcher in the American League hurt. They had a 22 game winning streak that ran until September 15, their +254 run differential was 56 runs better than the next best American League team (Houston), they won 102 games, they led the league in earned run average, their starters were 81-38 and they had four players hit between 29 and 38 homers, including 29 apiece from the left side of their infield, Francisco Lindor and Jose Ramirez. And they even drew 2.05M (22nd in MLB) to the ballpark formerly known as The Jake, the only time in this five year run they drew more than 1.6M or were higher than 28th in the majors. That is the reality they live with. One could argue that in terms of talent and human player development, the growth of young front office talent (6 current general managers and three club presidents), they are presently the best run organization in the sport, especially given their financial restraints.

Gateway Economic Development Corporation of Greater Cleveland (Gateway) was formed in 1990 by the City of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County, for the purposes of financing, building, owning and operating the Gateway Sports Complex in downtown Cleveland. Gateway owns Quicken Loans Arena, as well as Progressive Field and surrounding common areas, including Gateway Plaza along Ontario Avenue. Gateway’s lease agreements with the Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Cavaliers, as revised and extended in 2004 and 2007, facilitate Gateway’s ability to continue as a good steward of these two tremendous buildings, as it has been for a generation. The leases with the Indians and the Cavaliers require the teams to pay for operating and maintenance costs of their respective facilities, many of the capital repair costs, as well as all of the cost of operating the Gateway Corporation. Gateway’s responsibilities – pursuant to a budget agreed upon annually with the teams and financed by team rental payments - include common area maintenance, insurance, security, and oversight of the maintenance and capital repairs of the ballpark and the arena, ensuring that Gateway’s facilities are maintained to guarantee their long-term viability.

Remarkably, it's been 108 years since the Cubs were last on top of the baseball world. So if patience is a virtue, the Cubs and Tribe are as virtuous as they come. And the 2016 World Series that arrives with Monday's Media Day - - the pinch-us, we're-really-here appetizer to Tuesday's intensely anticipated Game 1 at Progressive Field -- is one pitting fan bases of shared circumstances and sentiments against each other. These are two cities, separated by just 350 miles, on the Great Lakes with no great shakes in the realm of baseball background, and that has instilled in their people a common and eventually unmet refrain of "Why not us?" But for one of them, the tide will soon turn and so, too, will the response: "Really? Us?" Yes, you. Imagine what that would feel like for Norman Rosen. "I'm getting there, let's put it that way," said Brantley, who drove in two of Cleveland's three runs. "It's going to take some repetition. It's going to take some time. I understand that. I understand the process that it takes now from being out for a little while -- actually a long while." Monday marked Brantley's 11th game of the 2017 season, which matches the total number of games he played in 2016. His season ended last year on May 9, as shoulder surgery cut things short for the former All-Star. Brantley, 29, now has two homers -- in a span of four games -- and eight RBIs overall. "He looks like Brantley, which is a big compliment to him and his work ethic," Francona said. For the final two months of this season, the pitcher finally seized the opportunity in overpowering fashion. On Saturday night, the Indians took the field for the first time this year without October baseball as a possibility and dropped a 2-0 decision to the Rays. A silver lining came in the form of Carrasco, who turned in another strong performance to end his season, giving the Tribe reason to be optimistic about the front end of its starting staff for the 2015. "I would say it flew past encouraging," Indians manager Terry Francona said of Carrasco's finish this season. "He's got so much to be excited about going into the offseason and into next year." Corey Kluber and Carrasco gave Cleveland one of the American League's top one-two punches in this season's second half, and both are under contract for multiple years going forward. The White Sox left- hander has tormented Cleveland's lineup over his career, and that did not change in a 2-1 victory for Chicago on Wednesday at Progressive Field. Holland carried a no-hitter through five innings and ended with one hit surrendered over six shutout frames for the White Sox. That performance -- one that included four strikeouts and four walks -- lowered his career ERA to 1.02 in 35 1/3 innings in Cleveland. In his career against the Tribe, Holland has gone 6-1 with a 2.35 ERA (61 1/3 innings). "Early in the game, he established his fastball," Indians manager Terry Francona said. This week, manager Terry Francona, along with president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti and general manager Mike Chernoff, have already held end-of-year meetings with Cleveland's players, coaches and staff. The goal is to gather input on this past season, make plans for the offseason months ahead and asssess the direction to take for 2019.
