In July of 2016, Arozarena signed a contract with the St. Louis Cardinals for $1.25 million. And after a season in the minor league system and another in back in Mexico, he returned back with the Cardinals for his last season in the minors in 2018. After six years of playing professionally, Arozarena made his major league debut for the Cardinals on Aug. 14, 2019. In his 19 games with St. Louis, Arozarena batted .300 with an unspectacular one home run and two RBIs. During the 60-game 2020 season, Arozarena played in just 20 games as a utility player during the regular season, hitting .281, but broke out in the power department with seven home runs and 11 RBIs, showing glimpses of stardom. In the postseason, the rookie flipped a switch. Arozarena was previously an unknown player, but quickly became a household name, hitting for a .377 average with 10 home runs and 14 RBIs. Arozarena’s explosion catapulted the small-market Rays into the World Series; he dominat- ed pitchers in every series. In the ALCS against the Houston Astros, he hit four home runs, including one in Game 7 to seal the Rays’ trip to the Fall Classic. While no player has ever done something like this before, Arozarena’s breakout especially came as a surprise as a rookie.

The Boston Red Sox Wednesday, March 3, 2021 * The Boston Globe How Nick Pivetta is embracing a fresh start with the Red Sox Peter Abraham FORT MYERS, Fla. — Nick and Kristen Pivetta have been nomads for some time, unable to return to their native Canada because of strict pandemic protocols regarding crossing the border from the United States. “We haven’t been home in almost two years,” said Nick, a righthander who was traded to the Red Sox last summer. “So we packed up and came here.” Home is now a rented condo a short drive from JetBlue Park. They arrived in October for what in every way has been a fresh start. Pivetta, 28, spent nearly five years with the Philadelphia Phillies. He made his major league debut with the team in 2017, won his first game a few weeks later, and struck out 13 Cardinals one memorable night in 2018. But he welcomed the trade to Boston. It was time. “I can’t speak on behalf of the Phillies. But I don’t feel they valued me as a starter anymore,” Pivetta said. “I was ready for some new scenery. It was best for both parties.” That was easily confirmed, a Phillies official saying the team felt Pivetta was more confident in his abilities than a career 5.40 earned run average suggested he should be. They recognized his talent but were frustrated by his stubbornness. The Red Sox took a chance on the talent, trading relievers Heath Hembree and Brandon Workman for Pivetta and righthander Connor Seabold.

  • Randy Arozarena Has Been Raking, and Orioles Are up Next
Rays’ Randy Arozarena has been raking, and Orioles are up next ST. PETERSBURG — Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena seems primed for a big weekend in Baltimore. The 2020 postseason breakout star has been on a torrid stretch, hitting .404 (23-for-57) over his last 14 games with 12 extra-base hits (including six homers), 11 RBIs and a 1.285 OPS. And he has been feasting all season on Orioles’ pitching, hitting .459 (17-for-37) over eight games with 10 extra-base hits (including seven homers), 16 RBIs and a 1.582 OPS. “He’s swung the bat well,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said Wednesday. “We know what he can do when he’s really hot. “He’s had some good games against Baltimore this year. Hopefully he can find that rhythm there and just continue it for the next couple weeks, and maybe two months. Whatever it takes. He’s such a big part of our offense.” Overall, Arozarena is hitting .268 with 16 homers, 52 RBIs, 11 steals (and a majors-most seven caught stealings) with an .802 OPS. Yarbrough on the attack Friday starter Ryan Yarbrough has had some good games in Baltimore, going 1-1 with a 2.89 earned-run average in five appearances. None better than July 14, 2019, when he followed opener Ryan Stanek’s pair of 1-2-3 innings with six of his own and went to the ninth with a chance for the first combined perfect game in major-league history. Yarbrough gave up two hits, and reliever Oliver Drake another, before sealing the 4-1 win.
