Aint Gonna Study War No More / Down by the Riverside
The Danish Peace Academy 1 Holger Terp: Aint gonna study war no more Ain't gonna study war no more By Holger Terp American gospel, workers- and peace song. Author: Text: Unknown, after 1917. Music: John J. Nolan 1902. Alternative titles: “Ain' go'n' to study war no mo'”, “Ain't gonna grieve my Lord no more”, “Ain't Gwine to Study War No More”, “Down by de Ribberside”, “Down by the River”, “Down by the Riverside”, “Going to Pull My War-Clothes” and “Study war no more” A very old spiritual that was originally known as Study War No More. It started out as a song associated with the slaves’ struggle for freedom, but after the American Civil War (1861-65) it became a very high-spirited peace song for people who were fed up with fighting.1 And the folk singer Pete Seeger notes on the record “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy and Other Love Songs”, that: "'Down by the Riverside' is, of course, one of the oldest of the Negro spirituals, coming out of the South in the years following the Civil War."2 But is the song as we know it today really as old as it is claimed without any sources? The earliest printed version of “Ain't gonna study war no more” is from 1918; while the notes to the song were published in 1902 as music to a love song by John J. Nolan.3 1 http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/grovemusic/spirituals,_hymns,_gospel_songs.htm 2 Thanks to Ulf Sandberg, Sweden, for the Pete Seeger quote. -

“Tenderly” Tells Story of Rosemary Clooney with Songs You Will
“Tenderly” tells story of Rosemary Clooney with songs you will remember https://morganhilllife.com/2018/05/07/curtains-up-theater-review-by-camille-bounds-tenderly-tells- story-of-rosemary-clooney-with-songs-you-will-remember/ By Camille Bounds Published online on May 7, 2018 “Tenderly” is the first musical of Gilroy’s Limelight’s 2018 season. It tells the little-known poignant life story of Rosemary Clooney. It is written by Janet Yates Vogt and Mark Friedman, produced by Kevin Heath and Alan Obata, and directed by the talented Diane Milo, (Always-Patsy Cline), who also marvelously plays Rosemary from her neglected, destitute childhood to her final return to stage and screen after a rollercoaster ride at life. Milo’s voice carries throughout the performance with a fine resonance. All Clooney’s songs are threaded through the production from her “Come On A My House,” “Botch-a Me,” Mambo Italiano,” Tenderly,” “Count Your Blessings,” “It’s Only a Paper Moon,” and “Straighten Up And Fly Right” just to name a few. Clooney had two rocky marriages to actor Jose Ferrer, with whom she had five children and struggled to maintain mental stability throughout her life. Liquor and pills finally took her stardom for about eight years when she was invited to perform by her good friend Bing Crosby in his “50th Anniversery Special” and be in the movie ” White Christmas.” She then maintained her stability until her death from lung cancer in 2002. (She was George Clooney’s aunt.) Michael Hirsch as Dr. Victor Monke, her psychiatrist, also plays all the other characters from her mother to Jose Ferrer to Bing Crosby. -

At Last”—Etta James (1961) Added to the National Registry: 2008 Essay by Cary O’Dell
“At Last”—Etta James (1961) Added to the National Registry: 2008 Essay by Cary O’Dell Etta James Original label Original LP Etta James’s legendary 1961 recording of “At Last” was one of her first releases for the Chess/Argo recording label after beginning her career with the Modern label. The change in companies also marked a change in James’s career. She recounted in her 1995 autobiography, “Rage to Survive”: I was no longer a teenager. I was twenty-two and sophisticated. Or at least I wanted to be sophisticated. So when Harvey [Fuqua, formerly of the Moonglows, and then James’s boyfriend] got out his “Book of One Hundred Standards” and began playing through old songs, I got excited. I saw in that music the mysterious life that my mother had led when I was a little girl, the life I secretly dreamed of living myself. I wanted to escape into a world of glamour and grace and easy sin. “At Last” was the first one to hit big…. Because of the way I phrased it, some people started calling me a jazz singer. And it was a change. Before her switch to Chess, James (born Jamesetta Hawkins in 1938) had primarily scored as a recording artist with what she would later call “quickie teenage rockin’, humping and bumping ditties.” Indeed, her oeuvre up to that time had been marked with such titles as “Dance With Me, Henry” (her breakthrough), “All I Could Do Was Cry,” and “My Dearest Darling.” And though “At Last” (from James’s album of the same name) was also about an endearing love, James’s soulful approach certainly bespoke of a more mature singer fully coming into her own. -
