Guerrero as Biographer As a crucial step toward a full narrative of Guerrero’s life story, this article relies on private correspondences and public papers to retell the evolution of León Maria Guerrero as biographer of Rizal. Guerrero, a noted newspaperman before becoming an eminent diplomat, wrote the prizewinning The First Filipino (1963), which represents a significant contribution toward the present understanding of a Rizal human enough to be the national hero. This article traces the construction, appropriation, and reappropriation of Rizal in the context of different phases of Philippine state politics, which influenced the method and strategy that Guerrero used to approach Rizal. Flores The criticism of Alice Guillermo presents an instance in which the encounter of the work of art resists a series of possible alienations even as it profoundly acknowledges the integrity of distinct form. The critic in this situation attentively dwells on the material of this form so that she may be able to explicate the ecology and the sociality without which it cannot concretize. The work of art, therefore, becomes the work of the world, extensively and deeply conceived. Such present-ness is vital as the critic faces the work in the world and tries to ramify that world beyond what is before her. This is one alienation that is calibrated. The work of art transpiring in the world becomes the work of the critic who lets it matter in language, freights it and leavens it with presence so that human potential unerringly turns plastic, or better still, animate: Against the cold stone, tomblike and silent, are the living glances, supplicating, questioning, challenging, or speaking—the eyes quick with feeling or the movements of thought, the mouths delicately shaping speech, the expressive gestures, and the bodies in their postures determined by the conditions of work and social circumstance. -

That in itself is significant. More significant however than the popularity. of the play is its message: the past is valuable, the present worth- less. Nick Joaquin is one of the more important writers in the , Philippines today. This Quarterly has already published two studies on his work: one on his short stories by Father Harry B. The Lost City: Carmen Guerrero Nakpil and the Battle of Manila 1945 Draft in Progress (as of March 16, 2010) Not for citation Satoshi Nakano Hitotsubashi University [email protected] / [email protected] Battle of Manila from February 3 to March 3, 1945, which was once given considerable publicity in the Japanese War Crimes Trials (1946-1948), has long been the subject of amnesia in Japan, the United States, and even in the Philippines. The 50th year's anniversary (1995) marked the quiet beginning of protest against forgetting with the erection of a small memorial by the civic group Memorare Manila 1945. Since then, both the media and scholars have begun to give more attention to the battle and its historical significance with an increasing number of publications reviving memories of the city's "death", i.e. Japanese atrocities, U.S. shelling, and all the sufferings of the civilians under siege. Will it be another "Rape of Nanking" issue for Japan in the near future? With this big question in the author’s mind, this paper will first focus on an 1976 essay written by Carmen Guerrero Nakpil, a woman journalist from the prominent Guerrero clan of Ermita, as an introduction to the coffee table photo-album titled "Manila" by an actress-photographer Gina Lollobrigida who was commissioned to shoot euphoric photographs of the Philippines under Marcos dictatorship for the purpose of tourist promotion. Strangely enough, Nakpil pours All-American place names in her celebration of the city’s modern urban landscape while hardly mentioning Manila's real local place names including Ermita, a major tourist attraction of the 1970s and the place where she was born and grew up in the 1920s to the 1930s. -
The Discourse Organization of Philippine University Newspaper Opinion Columns
The discourse organization of Philippine university newspaper opinion columns ilfre ariel apas University of Santo Tomas, Manila, The Philippines [email protected] Abstract Recent studies on text organization have focused mostly on business documents, academic texts, and certain newspaper articles such as editorials and news stories. However, the organization of opinion articles found in university-level newspapers has not been formally investigated. Therefore, this study attempts to determine whether these articles are written in accordance to journalistic writing principles. A total of 45 opinion articles were taken and served as the study corpus. These articles were analyzed based on Ho’s (2001) framework, as supported by the principles of macrostructure and the features of editorials in journalistic riting he fndings indicate that the discourse structure of Philippine newspaper opinion articles employs the two-move pattern in the orientation, exposition, and summation locks, here to freuently used specifc steps are found in each lock he fndings suggest that university students adhere to a prescried journalistic tet organization, although there is also a tendency to deviate from it. Furthermore, it is possible that their judicious choices in using a particular step may have been inuenced y the riters ojective of effectively communicating their opinion to a wide variety of readers. Kwan Laurel English has been in the Philippines for a hundred years, yet some of the best Filipino writers in English express ambivalence as to what should be done with it. This ambivalence is a product largely of a particular type of nationalist rhetoric that challenges the use of English in the Phil- ippines. The paper argues for the need to understand English as a global language and to claim Philippine English as our own language. Rather than protract the language debate, the need is to generate a Philippine literature in English, Filipino, or any language that can spark the imagi- nation of Filipinos and promote a wider readership. Volume 7 – Issue 1 – Summer 2020 Place and Cultural Identity in Joaquin’s The Mass of St. Sylvestre Mohammad Hossein Abedi Valoojerdi University of Perpetual Help System Dalta Las Piñas, Philippines Abstract Nick Joaquin (Nicomedes Márquez Joaquín, 1917-2004) is widely known for his interest in the Spanish colonial period and its culture in the Philippines. He employed the “Walled City” or Intramuros (Old Manila) as the setting for The Mass of St. Sylvestre (1946) and many other stories. Intramuros not only has an important role in Joaquin’s short story as a physical place, but also conveys identity elements and cultural meanings. This cathedral city has a glorious but neglected past and Joaquin, by retelling the stories from this magnificent past, recalls the link between Filipino identity and the formation of culture during the period of Spanish colonialism. His approach to the issue of identity corresponds to what Stuart Hall classifies as the “Enlightenment Subject” (1996, p. 597). This paper attempts to explore the role that place and the experience of landscape play as markers of cultural identity in The Mass of St. Sylvestre. Among those few, even fewer have paid much attention to The Mass of St. Sylvestre, a work that challenges deep-rooted ideas and ranges across an array of complex concepts to upend assumptions about Filipino culture, confronting the reader with a variety of unconventional potential interpretations. -

The preferred language medium they use to do so, however, may convey their perception and attitude towards languages. This study aimed to determine the preferred language that student journalists use in their articles, the reason for their preference, and their attitude towards English, Filipino, and their vernacular language. Mixed qualitative and quantitative methods were used as research design. Data were collected through distributing survey questionnaires to 58 student journalists in Mindano State Univeristy-Marawi during academic year 2013-2014 and conducting interviews to a random sample of 12 from those surveyed. Results showed that most of the student journalists prefer English while only a few uses Filipino and none prefer vernacular in writing. -
