He sang in the choir at St. Elijah Syrian Orthodox Church and briefly studied piano. He honed his writing skills with journalism courses, even working for a spell at the Ottawa Citizen. By 13, he had his own vocal group, the Bobbysoxers. He performed at every amateur night he could get to in his mother’s car, unbeknownst to his her of course. Soon after, he won a trip to New York by winning a Campbell’s soup contest that required him to spend three months collecting soup can labels. It was there his dream was solidified, he was going to make it as a singer composer; there was not a doubt in his young tenacious mind. In 1956, he convinced his parents to let him travel to Los Angeles, where he called every record company in the phone book looking for an audition. A meeting with Modern Records led to the release of Anka’s first single, “Blau-Wile Deverest Fontaine.” It was not a hit, but Anka kept plugging away, going so far to sneak into Fats Domino’s dressing room to meet the man and his manager in Ottawa. When Anka returned New York in 1957, he scored a meeting with Don Costa, the A&R man for ABC-Paramount Records.

Volume 2 Issue 1 February 2019 “I had formed most of my ingenious acquaintances into a club for mental improvement called the Junto” Cover Story The Junto February 2019 A line from the world’s most famous love story seemed fitting for our Love Edition. Ro- meo and Juliet reminds us that life is short and you have to take the time to love and to live when the opportunity is given because you never know how long it might last. Don’t let other people get in your way and don’t try and fake your death. It won’t end well. 1 People The Junto February 2019 How To Love Yourself Ally Fuller - Copy Editor Valentine’s Day is a holiday that is most often associated with romance, love, and devoting our atten- tion to the special people in our lives whether that be a significant other, a friend, or a family member. Normally, we take this day to spend time with these people and shower them with gifts, but the one per- son we tend to overlook on this day is ourselves. This is understandable because we have been raised to put the needs of others above the needs of our own, and we’ve been told time and time again that if we do take time for ourselves, it is selfish. However, many studies done in recent years show that incor- porating self-love into your life is critical to maintaining physical, mental, and emotional health. In fact, having more self-love is imperative for anyone looking to lead a happy, healthy, fulfilling lifestyle.

Put your head on my (virtual) shoulder: Paul Anka sings past classics while embracing the future in hologram technology BY FRANCOIS MARCHAND, VANCOUVER SUN AUGUST 28, 2015 Singing legend Paul Anka is performing at the Hard Rock Casino on Aug. 28. Photograph by: Keith Munyan, Handout PODCAST: In the launch episode of the Unedited podcast, host Francois Marchand chats with pop and swing legend Paul Anka about how much the music business has changed since the 1960s, his relationship with The Beatles, Las Vegas, Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, Michael Bublé and venturing into the future with his hologram company ARHT Media. If you own an old vinyl copy of Paul Anka’s 21 Golden Hits compilation from 1963, look on the back of the sleeve. There’s an address for Anka’s fan club, a PO Box (number 166) located in New York City’s Times Square. When asked what would happen should anyone send a letter or postcard to that address now, Anka bursts out laughing. “Good luck!” Anka exclaims over the phone. “I don’t even know if there’s still a building there. That was our fan club back then, and that’s how they dealt with (the mail), through PO boxes. It’s all changed. The building I was in is gone, the record company — everything’s just changed. You gotta understand that’s the way it is. Life is like that: You take the change and you do the best you can.” Hollywood | Los Angeles | Toronto | www.ARHTmedia.com 1 Over the course of his career, nearly 60 years running, Anka has witnessed plenty of change.

  • The Eddie Cochran Story
SHOW OF STARS 95 bassist Emory Gordy, who'd go on to play with or produce Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Roy Orbison, and George Jones; drummer Dennis St. John, who'd later work with Neil Diamond, Carole Bayer Sager, and the Band; and keyboardist Spooner Oldham, who'd played with Percy Sledge, Wilson Pickett, and Aretha Franklin and who'd later work with Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and Jackson Browne. Kindred was persistent. I recommended to them some great players; they'd decided that only I would do. Since they were already signed to Warner Brothers and had tremendous touring and recording potential, I decided to join them, recording a pair of Kindred albums in 1971 and 1972 and touring throughout America and Canada opening for Three Do,g Night. Through our shared management connection, I soon got a call from Jerry Edmonton, the drummer from Steppenwolf. They want ed me to join their band. I stayed for three albums and four years as the group's lead guitarist, one of its songwriters , and a co-lead and backing vocalist. Toward the end of my tenure with "the Wolf," I received a call from the Flying Burrito Brothers, the country-rock outfit founded by Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman of the Byrds. They needed a guitarist for a two -week tour. I went down to the rehearsal hall, jammed with the group, and found myself a Burrito for the next fourteen months. Like Uncle Ed in his brief lifetime, I have played with a plethora of artists-from obscure to superstars and try to take something of value away from every musical expe rience.
