NETGEAR Digital Entertainer Model EVA700 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Q: Can I use my Digital Entertainer without an Intel Viiv Technology Enabled PC? A: Yes, the Digital Entertainer comes bundled with Microsoft Windows Media Connect, which can serve various media files for playback on the Digital Entertainer using Windows XP. Q: I have an Intel Viiv Technology Enabled PC, but I do not have a Viiv-verified router. Can I still use my Digital Entertainer with my Viiv PC? A: Yes, you will be able to access content on the PC via both the Intel Media Server and the Intel Viiv Zone. However, without a Viiv router, you will be unable to use your Intel Viiv PC to easily connect the Digital Entertainer to your network wirelessly. In this case, you must enter wireless network parameters manually. Please see the User Guide for instructions. Q: I turned on my Digital Entertainer for the first time, but I can't see anything on the screen. What's wrong? A: First, check all cables to make sure they are connected properly, and be sure you are using the correct input on your TV. If you still can't see anything, try pressing the TV Mode button on the remote to change the video mode. Q: I’m using WPA security but cannot get the Digital Entertainer to connect, what might be wrong? A: For WPA security, make sure you enter the WPA passphrase into the Key box on the WiFi menu. Q: Why won't certain files play? A: The Digital Entertainer may not support the audio or video format used in the file. For information on what media formats EVA700 supports, please see the User Guide. Q: Can I play music while watching a photo slideshow? A: Yes. Go to the Music menu and start playing a song playlist. While the music is playing, you can go to the Photos menu and start playing your slideshow with the music in the background. Q: I would like to use a wireless connection from my wireless router to both the Digital Entertainer and Media Server, is that OK? A: For streaming video, it is recommended that only one of the links be wireless, either the Digital Entertainer to the router or your media server to the router. Connect the other device to the router using a wired connection. Having the Digital Entertainer and Media Server both connected wirelessly may degrade performance for video, but music and photo playback should be fine. Q: I have a computer that is a member of a Windows Domain. I installed Windows Media Connect and shared some files, but my Digital Entertainer can't see the server. What's wrong? A: Unfortunately, this particular setup is not supported. A possible workaround is to completely uninstall Windows Media Connect, create a local user account with administrator privileges, and install and use Media Connect while logged in as this local user. Alternatively, you can use a third-party UPnP-compatible media server, such as TwonkyVision. If you do install the TwonkyMedia server, please make sure that all the check boxes are left unchecked (i.e. don't install as a system service) when given installation options. Q: I'm using the TwonkyVision media server and am experiencing video stuttering, what can I do to improve performance? A: Try increasing the Streaming Buffer Size (under Performance settings) to 64000 or greater to help improve the video streaming performance. Rev. 081006-01 Q: How can I play back protected (DRM) files bought from an online service such as Napster, MSN Music, or MovieLink? A: Since these files are protected, they can only be played if served from a PC using Windows Media Connect or the Intel Viiv Media Server. Other third-party media servers will not work. Q: How do I connect my Digital Entertainer from the living room to my router for best performance? A: For the best performance from your Digital Entertainer, a wired Ethernet connection will enable HD video and high resolution photos to be streamed at the highest bitrates. Secondarily, using NETGEAR's Powerline HD product provides a next generation alternative to wireline and supports all but the most demanding HD streaming and high resolution photos. For wireless 802.11G connection, you can expect to stream standard definition video, music and standard resolution photos reliably although high network traffic and interference may cause some audio/video interruptions. Q: The photos I see on my HDTV aren’t in high resolution, what might be the problem? A: Many media servers intentionally downscale photos in order to optimize the speed of picture downloads. You might check your server software to see if you can disable picture scaling to view photos in the higher resolution. However, the WMC server only runs in optimized downscaled picture mode. Q: Only one video/song/photo plays when I select it, how do I play the entire list? A: When selecting a video/song/photo to play, press the OK button on the remote control plays just the selected file while pressing the PLAY/PAUSE button plays the entire list of files. Q: The lights on the Ethernet port are not lit, and my wired connection won't work. What's wrong? A: Try pushing the Uplink button next to the Ethernet port. You will need to power-cycle EVA700 to switch from wireless to wired. Q: Why isn't my USB disk recognized by EVA700? A: Some flash drives cannot currently be detected properly, in particular, devices that claim to be "USB hubs," even if they are not. Also, EVA700 only supports drives formatted with the FAT filesystem. NTFS- formatted drives will not work. Q: Can I connect my iPod to the EVA700? A: Yes, simply connect the iPod's USB cable to the USB port and navigate the iPod hard drives folders until you see your music. However, you must have a "Windows formatted iPod." A "Mac formatted iPod" will not be detected properly. Q: When I connect my iPod to EVA700, I see strange folder names and strange music file names. What do I do? A: Unfortunately, iTunes does not store music files on the iPod with normal names. The EVA700 can only display the filenames as they are saved on the iPod. Rev. 081006-01 .
