DEAR SPORT FRIENDS, On behalf of the Kwazulu Natal Canoe Union I would like to welcome the Marathon canoeing community to Kwazulu Natal and Pietermaritzburg for the 2017 ICF World Championships and African Marathon Championships. Pietermaritzburg is a famous sport loving town and home of the Dusi Canoe Marathon, the Midmar Mile and the Comrades Marathon. Many of the local community know and follow canoeing and canoeing events and great support is given to these big events. I am sure the 2017 ICF World Championships and African Championships will be no exception. I look forward to welcoming you to the ICF Canoe Marathon World and African Championships in Pietermaritzburg in September 2017. Yours sincerely Tim Cornish KNCU Chairman 4 | page PIETERMARITZBURG – “THE CITY OF CHOICE” Pietermaritzburg, the vibrant Capital city of KwaZulu – Natal (KZN) brims with character and activity, and its central position within the province makes it the “City of Choice” for anyone wanting to visit the Zulu Kingdom. It is the ideal stepping-off point to other major provincial attractions – Drakensberg; beach or battlefields. The capital city of the Kingdom of the Zulu is perfectly appointed between the subtropical coastline of KwaZulu - Natal and the majestic Drakensberg Mountains. A comfortable trip to the glorious beaches and a stones throw away from sundowners in the highest pub in Africa. Situated just 45 minutes from Durban, the busiest port in Africa, and astride the country’s busiest development corridor, the N3 highway connecting Durban to Gauteng, South Africa’s financial hub. Pietermaritzburg is a mere 4.5 hours drive from Johannesburg, and “Johannesburger’s” don’t think twice about jumping into their vehicles and heading to Pietermaritzburg to attend an event. Pietermaritzburg, the second largest city in KwaZulu Natal, is a colourful, picturesque, modern city located in a broad basin surrounded by a range of thickly forested hills, hence, the tag “Sleepy Hollow”. Of course, the city has since shaken off this tag and has woken to an era of unprecedented growth, particularly in the property and retail sectors. 5 | page LOCATION PIETERMARITZBURG 6 | page AIRPORTS, TRANSFERS AND TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS Enquiries All enquiries regarding travel arrangements can be made at [email protected] International arrivals are catered for by three International airports in South Africa: Oliver Tambo International in Johannesburg Cape Town International Durban King Shaka International Airport Competitors arriving in Johannesburg have 3 options of travelling to Pietermaritzburg: 1. By domestic airline (SA Airlink or SA Express) to Oribi Airport in PMB. Note: these airplanes are small, and may have luggage restrictions. Flying time is approximately 1 hour. 2. Hiring a car at O R Tambo airport and driving to Pietermaritzburg. This does give visitors the opportunity of exploring South Africa and seeing some of the countryside. Drive time is approximately 5 hours non-stop. 3. By bus transport from Johannesburg to Pietermaritzburg (not recommended) Competitors arriving in Cape Town have 1 option of travelling to Pietermaritzburg: 1. By domestic airline (South African Airways, British Airways, Mango or Kulula Airlines) to King Shaka Airport outside Durban. Flying time is approximately 2 hours. Competitors can then either hire a car at King Shaka Airport or catch a shuttle bus to Pietermaritzburg Competitors arriving at King Shaka International Airport in Durban have 2 option of travelling to Pietermaritzburg: 1. Hiring a car at King Shaka airport and driving to Pietermaritzburg. This does give visitors the opportunity of exploring South Africa and seeing some of the countryside. Drive time is approximately 65 - 80 minutes non-stop. 2. By Shuttle bus transfer. A shuttle bus transfer can be arranged with the Event organisers. NCC has excellent club house facilities for 450 members, as well as world class training facilities, gym, physio rooms and administrative facilities. The course will be on Camps Drift canal, on the Umsunduzi River, where the Dusi Canoe Marathon Starts PROVISIONAL COURSE The disembarkation and embarkation area for the portages will be on a jetty with LEFT HAND SIDE takeout and put-in only. The portage area will be clearly shown by barriers, and will be clearly marked by red and yellow flags at the disembarkation and embarkation areas. The total portage distance will be approximately 100 meters. The portage will allow at least 4 K2’s to be portaged simultaneously. 12 | page ENTRIES AND ACCREDITATION PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!!!     International Canoe Federation Level 1 Assistant Canoe Sprint Coach Course Presented by Gregory van Heerden ICF Level 1 accredited course Facilitator Acknowledgements The implementation of this course would not have been possible without the generous help and support of the following: • The International Canoe Federation, Kwazulu Natal Canoe Union and Canoeing South Africa. • Shongweni and Umzinyathi Canoe Club Coaches attending the course at Shongweni Course date This level 1 course was held from the 16th – 17th November 2019 and comprised of two full days (08h00-17h00) of lectures and practical. Course Outcomes and measurement The purpose of the Level 1 course was to provide the coaches with the basic knowledge and skills needed to coach beginners in canoe/kayak. The course comprised of theory, practical and an “apprenticeship”. On the completion of the course the coaches were able to: • Provide a safe environment for paddling to take place • Plan and conduct beginner lessons • Plan and conduct a basic training session • Teach balance, the basic technique of kayak paddling and steering • Conduct basic physical conditioning training • Prepare athletes for domestic level competition In order to assess the coaches knowledge and their practical ability to apply the knowledge learnt they had to complete a practical test and written exam comprising of 20 questions (a minimum of 16 correct responses was required in order to pass) and a practical test in which they had to correctly carry out a beginners lessons. Going forward all Coaches will need to keep a personal log of their coaching activities to document their “apprenticeship” activities as this proof will be needed as one of the requirements of entry onto the Level 2 course.

    International Canoe Federation Level 1- Online Assistant Canoe Sprint Coach Course Presented by Gregory van Heerden ICF Level 1 accredited course Facilitator Acknowledgements The implementation of this course would not have been possible without the generous help and support of the following: The International Canoe Federation and Canoeing South Africa. Online Session in progress Course date This online level 1 course was held over 9 sessions split over a three-week period (8th April to 1st May 2021), with sessions of 60 to 90 minutes being held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. Whilst predominantly an online course three practical elements were included to ensure a transfer of theory to actual coaching application. Course Outcomes and measurement The purpose of the Level 1 course was to provide the coaches with the basic knowledge and skills needed to coach beginners in canoe/kayak. The course comprised of theory and three practical tasks as well as an “apprenticeship”.     SAFETY HANDBOOK 1 CSA SAFETY BOOKLET 2015 FOREWARD: For thousands of active paddlers in South Africa, the attraction of the sport includes the exhilaration of running rapids, surfing waves, and mastering the dangers and fears that the rivers and oceans holds in store. The element of danger is inextricably linked to the pleasure derived from the sport. However it also makes safety, and the management of all aspects relating to it, a primary responsibility of each and every individual, as well as the various tiers of the sport’s administration. Canoeing South Africa (CSA) is the federation that is the governing body for competitive canoeing in South Africa. CSA is designated as an Authorised Agency in terms of regulation 30 of the Merchant Shipping (National Small Vessel Safety) Regulations 2007, as amended. The purpose of the designation as an authorised agency is to entrust CSA with responsibility to diligently and faithfully perform certain functions in the best interests of their sport and its members. The CSA objectives include the need to obviate the inherent danger involved in canoeing and it is in this respect that they have published their Safety Regulations Byelaw. The byelaw specifies that the safety standards are set in the CSA Safety handbook and highlights certain other issues related to boating safety. The CSA Safety handbook lays out the management of all aspects related to canoeing safety. The byelaw and handbook are the basis of the SAMSA delegation of authority as an Authorised Agent. This handbook sets out the responsibilities of the Federation, Union, Club and individual, as well as elaborating on equipment and techniques that will make the sport as safe as possible.

CSA is designated as an Authorised Agency in terms of regulation 30 of the Merchant Shipping (National Small Vessel Safety) Regulations 2007, as amended. Introduction Authorised Agencies have a long and important history in ensuring the safety of boating in South Africa. Currently Authorised Agencies are appointed in terms of the Merchant Shipping (National Small Vessel Safety) Regulations 2007, as amended; and may be designated various functions. The SAMSA policy for the appointment of authorised agencies is contained in Marine Notice 13 of 2011 at paragraph 3. The guiding policy related to the appointment of authorised agencies, as contained in Marine Notice 13, is that organised sporting bodies who use boats to carry out their sport are encouraged to ensure the safety, marking and certification of their own vessels. Canoeing South Africa (CSA) has applied to SAMSA for designation as an Authorised Agency. The details of their compliance and designation is explained in this notice. 2. Canoeing South Africa The CSA constitution states that they are the federation recognised by the International Canoe Federation, South African Sport and Olympic Committee and Sport and Recreation South Africa as the sole controlling body for canoeing in South Africa.

    Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) is the national government department responsible for sport in South Africa. Aligned with its vision of creating An Active and Winning Nation, its primary focuses are providing opportunities for all South Africans to participate in sport; managing the regulatory framework thereof and providing funding for different codes of sport. The department transforms the delivery of sport and recreation by ensuring equitable access, development and excellence at all levels of participation, thereby improving social cohesion, nation-building and the quality of life of all South Africans. The SRSA is established in terms of the Public Service Act of 1994. Its legal mandate is derived from the National Sport and Recreation Amendment Act, 2007 (Act 18 of 2007), which requires it to oversee the development and management of sport and recreation in South Africa. The Act provides the framework for relationships between the department and its external clients. This includes the SRSA’s partnership with the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC). The partnership is key to improving South Africa’s international ranking in selected sports. The Act also ensures that sport and physical education contribute to social cohesion by legislating on sports participation and sports infrastructure. Aligned with the SRSA’s vision of an active and winning nation, the department primarily focuses on providing opportunities for all South Africans to participate in sport; manages the regulatory framework; and provides funding for different sporting codes. The study discussed the importance of service quality within sport tourism, while the methods and instruments applicable to assess the level of service quality within sport tourism, were also addressed. The survey was conducted across selected viewpoints, which included the starting and the finishing points of the marathon. A total of 100 survey questionnaires were distributed to spectators and participants at the event using purposive sampling, while stratified random sampling was used to determine the viewpoints. The SERVQUAL dimensions were incorporated in the questionnaires as the basis to determine the level of service delivery at the event.

    THE FNB DUSI CANOE MARATHON 2017 FINAL INSTRUCTIONS Thank you for entering THE FNB DUSI CANOE MARATHON 2017. These final instructions are intended to give a brief over view of the latest regulations for the running of the race and new information not on the race website. Please be sure that you have read the rules on the race website, www.dusi.co.za carefully. MARKING OF RAPIDS AND DANGER POINTS Paddlers are urged that river safety is the primary responsibility of the paddlers themselves. The policy of the Dusi Committee is NOT to mark any rapids. Paddlers are encouraged to paddle according to their known skill levels and to shoot rapids according to their level of ability. All of the known dangerous rapids have recognized portages around them. The take outs for known portages at the identified danger points only will be marked with different colored banners. Yellow will mark an obstacle where the portage is optional, but advisable if the paddler is uncertain; and Red for compulsory portages. INSTRUCTIONS FROM MARSHALLS Please note that rescue and safety marshalls at rapids are not there to instruct the paddlers on which line to take and will only give instructions on safety issues and must be obeyed without question. PENALTIES FOR SECONDING INFRINGEMENTS It is the organizing committee’s intention to continue with the practice of holding the paddlers responsible for the actions of their seconds. Apart from serious offences, the practice of relegating the paddlers associated with offending seconds to the last batch on Day’s 2 and 3 for minor offences on Days 1 and 2 will continue.
