' ,,i'' ' HISTORY I• i The first owner of this house was Frank Makin, a sharebroker, who lived there for five years, selling the property in 1888 to George Riddoch. In 1897 Frank Rymill and his family lived at 'Coreega' while additions were made to their own home 'Springfield. House', situated to the north-east. In 1906 it was sold to Joseph Florey, the Director of the Standard Boot and Shoe Company in Gawler Place. Joseph and Bertha Florey lived at 'Coreega' for nearly 13 years, their son Howard Walter being eight years old '· when they moved into the house. Howard Florey was educated at St Peter's College and the University • of Adelaide. In 1921 he entered Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. He studied in England and America in the 1920s and became Professor of Pathology at Sheffield University from 1931 for four years. In 1935 he was appointed Professor of Pathology at Oxford. Florey was knighted in 1944 and in 1945 shared the Nobel Prize with Dr Ernst· Chain for his part in developing the first antibiotic, penicillin, from a mould discovered by Sir Alexander Fleming in 1928. As a result of this work, pharmaceutical houses were able to manufacture penicillin in quantity during the latter stages of the Second World War. When Joseph Florey died in September 1918 his widow continued living at 'Coreega' for a year before selling the property to Mrs Antonie Wells and Mrs Rosa Stump. It was passed on to Mrs Stump's daughter Rosalind, the first wife of Mr Clifford Cornell. In October 1951, 'Coreega' became the joint property of Clifford Cornell and his second wife Mollie. Extensive subdivision was carried out during the next decade with Coreega Avenue being created as an access to the new blocks. STATEMENT OF HERITAGE VALUE Built in 1882-83 for Mr Frank Makin. 'Coreega' was the boyhood home of Sir Howard Florey, later Lord Florey, awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine in 1945 as the co-discoverer of penicillin The house demonstrates exceptional merit in the construction and finish of a mid-Victorian dwelling. \ References State Heritage Branch Files, File No. 11515 ..., Jl ~i '. ·1· .. ·""..., .J ·~ 68 Taylor WeideJI' r"::'. £i ~ 27 September 1990] THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT GAZETTE 1035 SOUTH AUSTRALIAN HERITAGE ACT, 1978 Entry of Items on the Register of State Heritage Items Pursuant to the provisions of the South Australian Heritage Act, 1978, I, Susan Mary Lenehan, Minister for Environment and Planning and Minister for the time being administering the said Act, hereby give notice that I have entered on the Register of State Heritage Items the items described in the Schedule hereunder. W Some of our names have apparently been given to the places by drunken bushmen andfrom our scrupulosity in interfering with the liberty of the subject, an inflection of no light character has to be borne by those who come after them. SheaoakLog ispassable... as it has an interesting historical association connectedwith it. But what shall we say for Skillogolee Creek? Are we ever to be reminded of thin gruel days at Dotheboy’s Hall or the parish poor house. (Register, 7 October 1861, page 3c) Wabricoola - A property North -East of Black Rock; see pastoral lease no. 1634. Waddikee - A town, 32 km South-West of Kimba, proclaimed on 14 July 1927, took its name from the adjacent well and rock called wadiki where J.C. Darke was killed by Aborigines on 24 October 1844. Waddikee School opened in 1942 and closed in 1945. Aboriginal for ‘wattle’. ( See Darke Peak, Pugatharri & Koongawa, Hundred of) Waddington Bluff - On section 98, Hundred of Waroonee, probably recalls James Waddington, described as an ‘overseer of Waukaringa’. Wadella - A school near Tumby Bay in the Hundred of Hutchison opened on 1 July 1914 by Jessie Ormiston; it closed in 1926. Wadjalawi - A tea tree swamp in the Hundred of Coonarie, west of Point Davenport; an Aboriginal word meaning ‘bull ant water’. Wadmore - G.W. Goyder named Wadmore Hill, near Lyndhurst, after George Wadmore, a survey employee who was born in Plymouth, England, arrived in the John Woodall in 1849 and died at Woodside on 7 August 1918. W.R. Wadmore, Mayor of Campbelltown, was honoured in 1972 when his name was given to Wadmore Park in Maryvale Road, Campbelltown.
