Taste in all things was a constant between Dr Lecter’s lives in America and Europe. Between his life as a successful medical practitioner and fugitive monster. (Hannibal 225) The monster, Jeffrey Jerome Cohen (1996: 7-12), among others, has proposed, is one who marks the outside, comes from an elsewhere. The monster is ‘not one of us’. He represents the limits of civilization and civility. Yet twentieth century’s most fascinating fictional monster, with his own cult following due to the TV series, is the very embodiment of civility and ‘high’ culture: Hannibal Lecter. Lecter, who makes his debut in Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon, finally gets to be the centrepiece of a series of horror-thrillers: TheSilence of the Lambs, Hannibal and Hannibal Rising. He is no alien or outsider though but rather, until he is caught, a Johns Hopkins Medical school graduate and respected clinical psychiatrist. LHM Ling notes: ‘Hannibal the Cannibal cannot remain an “alien” monster. He is, instead, a familiar, identifiable character: one of us. Put differently, the evil other now resides explicitly within’ (2004: 380, emphasis in original).Yet, Hannibal is unlike one of us for several reasons: he is a cannibal with a serious set of affectations, a man of supreme tastes in food, clothing, cars and drinks. He is extremely well-read in a wide variety of areas, from astronomy to gastronomy. He has an enviable knowledge of art and music. -

PANEL VAN - DAY Clarice Starling is dead, laid out in fatigues across a bench in the back of a ratty, rattling undercover van. Three other agents sit perched on the opposite bench, staring at her lifeless body. BURKE How can she sleep at a time like this? BRIGHAM She's on a jump-out squad all night; she's saving her strength. INT. UNDERGROUND GARAGE - DAY Gray cement walls blur past as the panel van descends a circular ramp to a lower level. As it straightens out, the view through the windshield reveals a gathering of men and vehicles - marked and unmarked DC police cars - and two black SWAT vans. The panel van - with Marcell's Crab House painted on its sides - pulls to a stop. The back doors open from the inside and Starling is the first one out - well-rested and alert - hoisting down her equipment bag. One of the DC policemen, the one whose girth and manner say he's in charge, watches the woman by the van slip into a Kevlar vest, drop a Colt .45 into a shoulder holster, and a .38 into an ankle holster. She straightens up, approaches the men and lays a street plan across the hood of one of their cars. STARLING All right, everyone, pay attention. Here's the layout - BOLTON Excuse me, I'm Officer Bolton, DC Police. STARLING Yes, I can see that from your uniform and badge, how do you do? BOLTON I'm in charge here. -

As pagan diety, she would be a symbol of the polytheism that early Christians necessarily feared and rejected. She is the author of Undead Apocalypse: Vampires and Zombies in the 21st Century (2016), Celluloid Vampires (2007), Angel: TV Milestone (2009), co-author, with Lorna Jowett, of TV Horror: The Dark Side of the Small Screen (2012), and editor of The Cult TV Book (2010). She has written extensively about the horror genre on film and television and is currently writing a book on Kathryn Bigelow’s Near Dark. Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon (1981) introduced readers to the highly intelligent, articulate and cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter, albeit in his first outing restricted to his prison cell and serving as a reluctant consultant to the FBI profiler who captured him, Will Graham. The book was followed by three sequels in which Lecter takes an increasingly central place within the narrative: The Silence of the Lambs (1988), Hannibal (1999) and Hannibal Rising (2006). These novels have been source material for a total of five cinematic adaptations: Michael Mann’s Manhunter (1986), Jonathan Demme’s The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Ridley Scott’s 2 Hannibal (2001), Brett Ratner’s Red Dragon (2002), and the prequel Peter Webber’s Hannibal Rising (2007). According to Philip Jenkins, the influence of Harris’ books in the construction of the image of the modern serial killer within popular media was “vastly enhanced by the release of the film versions,” the success of which attracted many imitators with “some novels claim[ing] to be in the tradition of The Silence of the Lambs, or to have villains in the tradition of Hannibal Lecter” (1994, 89). -

Friedrich Nietzsche had envisioned such a man who had the potential to show the world the right way. This Ubermensch will become their leader, and his ideals will replace the old ones. He should be creative, incorruptible and has the herculean task of waging war with the old rules. The world sometimes may not be able to digest what the NAMITHA SOMAN Ubermensch has to teach, and he may be declared insane by the people. This research article explores a sociopath from literature, namely Dr Hannibal Lecter, to find out whether they posses the qualities required for an Ubermensch. Through an examination of their characters, the research article concludes that Hannibal had the potential to become Ubermensch, but he could not completely fulfil his destinies, making him "Alter-Ubermensch". LECTER, HANNIBAL PATIENT HISTORY AND PROFILE SOURCES: forensic evidence, public records, eyewitness accounts, interviews, and psychological profiles. Born in Lithuania. Father a Count, mother a highborn Italian. Believed to be descended from the ruthless Tuscan Guiliano Bevisangue and from the Machiavelli and Visconti bloodlines. 1944 – At 6 years of age, Lecter would have shown a frightening intensity and detachment toward those around him, with seemingly preternatural knowledge. At this time the Eastern Front of World War II collapsed, and Lithuania suffered great devastation during the German retreat from Russia. Records exist of an opulent estate near Vilnius, believed to be the Lecters’, where Nazis killed the sovereignty and servants. Several bodies were recovered; none were children. NOTE: The following is strictly theoretical. As the Nazis retreat, several scavengers lodge in the Lecter estate. Those children who survived the attacks are stored in a barn. With a particularly harsh winter, food becomes scarce, and the scavengers turn to the children. Lecter may have been considered, but thought too wiry and thin. Instead, his younger sibling, sister Mischa, is taken from the barn. She is never seen again. 1944-1970 – Lecter’s activities largely unknown. Moved to the United States and established citizenship. 1970 – While serving as an emergency room physician at Maryland- Misericordia Hospital, Dr. Hannibal Lecter admits and treats a male bow hunter with an arrow wound. 1970-1975 – Lecter establishes a psychiatric practice in Maryland. 1975 – Dr. Lecter performs psychiatric evaluations for the Maryland and Virginia state courts. Many of his affluent patients claim to have released various funds and stocks to Lecter, however, the IRS was unable to confirm transactions. -
