Game #1 Brown at Georgetown 9/20/14 Washington, DC Brown’s 137th season of intercollegiate football began on a note with the Bears dropping a 17- 3 decision to Georgetown Saturday afternoon in the nation’s capital. The Bears, who replaced 11 graduated seniors on offense, are 0-1 on the season, while Georgetown evened its record at 2-2.

Bears’ senior quarterback Marcus Fuller, making his first collegiate start, completed 18 of 31 passes for 202 yards. He successfully connected on five passes to senior Stian Romberg and four more to junior Troy Doles. Senior tailback Andrew Coke rushed for 72 yards for the Bears.

“Marcus made some big plays, but he needs more consistency,” said Brown coach Phil Estes. “I’m sure Marcus would like to have a couple of balls back. He’s a very good quarterback who needs to settle down. He’s a competitor, but we need to protect him like I know we can.”

When Estes looked at the final stat sheet, he saw four Brown turnovers – two and two interceptions – that made the difference in the game.

“Penalties and big plays really hurt us,” said Brown head coach Phil Estes. “Our fumble at the goal line in the first quarter gave great momentum to Georgetown. As a young team you can’t make those mistakes.”

Defensively, senior inside linebacker Xavier Russo led the Bears with 10 tackles and a quarterback sack. Senior safety Jacob Supron also had 10 tackles, while junior Jacob Walther had Brown’s lone interception, off a deflection.

Georgetown used a balanced attack on offense to rack-up 427 total yards. Quarterback Kyle Nolan threw for 177 yards, while Jo’el Kimpela ran for a game high 104 yards.

Fuller took all of the first quarter and into the second quarter to get comfortable, but guided the Bears down to the Georgetown one-yard line before a fumble turned the over to the Hoyas.

Undaunted, the Bears drove down to the Hoyas five yard line on their next possession and got on the scoreboard with a 22-yard field goal by junior Grant Senne with 7:42 left in the second quarter, capping an 80-yard scoring drive.

Georgetown answered immediately and took its first lead when Daniel Wright scored on a 57-yard run just 38 seconds later to give the Hoyas a 7-3 advantage at the half.

The Hoyas seemingly took control of the game when quarterback Kyle Nolan connected on a 25-yard touchdown strike to Jake DiCicci to pull ahead by a 14-3 margin with 7:40 left in the third quarter.

A late 44-yard field goal by Henry Darmstadter gave Georgetown the final margin of victory, 17-3.

Game #2 Harvard at Brown 9/27/14 Providence, R.I. Brown played physical football and led through three quarters, but Harvard rallied for a 22-14 Ivy League win over the Bears before a near sellout crowd of 13,511 at Brown Stadium. The Bears (0-2, 0-1 Ivy) wore throwback uniforms as part of the university’s 250th anniversary celebration.

“We came out with enthusiasm and played physical Brown football,” said Brown head coach Phil Estes. “We battled out there, but still have a lot of work to do.”

Harvard (2-0, 1-0 Ivy) struck first, capping a 57-yard scoring drive with a nine-yard from Scott Hosch, who was starting in place of injured Connor Hempel, to Andrew Fischer with 2:11 left in the opening quarter. The extra point failed on a high and the Crimson led, 6-0.

Brown took the lead and scored its first touchdown of the young season on an 18-yard scoring strike from senior quarterback Marcus Fuller to a wide-open senior Reiley Higgins in the right side of the with 2:20 left in the half to lift the Bears to a 7-6 halftime advantage.

The Bears extended their lead to 14-6 on a one-yard touchdown run by junior Andrew Coke with 6:48 left in the third quarter, capping off a workmanlike 95 yard, 9 play drive.

The Crimson nudged closer to the Bears and pulled to within a point, 14-13, on a 43-yard run by Paul Stanton with 2:39 remaining in the third quarter.

Andrew Flesher’s 22-yard field goal gave Harvard the lead for good, 16-14, with 8:47 left in the game. Hosch’s three-yard run with 2:07 left iced the game for the Crimson, 22-14.

Fuller headlined the Brown offense and passed for 238 yards, while completing 16 of 29 passes. Junior tailback Andrew Coke rushed for 56 yards, and Higgins caught a team leading four passes. Sophomore wide receiver Alex Jette had several big catches, making three receptions for 77 yards.

Defensively, junior safety Will Quigley led the Bears with 10 tackles, including six solo stops. Senior inside linebacker Xavier Russo made nine total tackles. Sophomore defensive end Robert Hughes and sophomore tackle Tom Kutschke each registered a quarterback sack.

Hosch passed for 234 yards, completing 24 of 34 passes. Paul Stanton had his second consecutive 100-yard rushing game, running for 120 yards.

Game #3 Brown at Rhode Island 10/4/14 Kingston, R.I. Brown used a balanced offensive attack and a defense that held Rhode Island (0-5) to just three rushing yards to capture the Governor’s Cup for the fourth straight year and earn its first win of the season, beating the Rams, 20-13, at Meade Stadium, in the 99th meeting between the two Ocean State universities.

Clinging to a narrow 17-13 lead, Brown (1-2) went on a nine-minute fourth quarter drive, grinding down the field 80 yards, that culminated in a 26-yard field goal by junior Grant Senne with 3:28 left in the game to give the Bears a 20-13 lead.

“Coach (Frank) Sheehan really did a great job of calling plays to milk the clock,” said Brown head coach Phil Estes. “I’m happy for our players. We now know how to win. It’s great to bring home the Governor’s Cup for the fourth straight year.”

Bears’ senior quarterback Marcus Fuller passed for 169 yards and a touchdown, completing 20-of-35 passes. Brown’s rushing attack was buoyed by the play of junior tailback Andrew Coke, who ran for 61 yards, and junior quarterback Seth Rosenbauer, who had 53 yards on 10 carries.

Senior Brian Strahan hade seven receptions for 55 yards, while senior Stian Romberg had four receptions for 38 yards and a touchdown.

“We were able to execute with our guys up front doing a fantastic job,” said Fuller. ”When you run the football it opens up the entire playbook.”

Brown’s defense had nine tackles for a loss of 40 yards and three quarterback sacks. Senior inside linebacker Xavier Russo led the Bears with six tackles, while senior cornerback Jacob Supron had five solo hits, a tackle for a loss and an interception.

“We played much more physical in the second half and started to believe in ourselves,” said Supron.

Supron intercepted a URI pass at the Brown 38 yard line and returned it to the Rams’ 42 yard line. Fuller threw a seven-yard scoring strike to Romberg to give the Bears a 7-0 advantage with 4:24 left the opening quarter.

Rhode Island got on the scoreboard and tied the game, 7-7, just before the end of the half when Harold Cooper took a short pass from quarterback Mack Lowrie and scampered down the sideline 39- yards for a touchdown.

The Bears grabbed a 10-7 lead with 5:09 left in the third quarter when Senne booted a 32-yard field goal.

Sophomore Alex Jette set up Brown’s next touchdown, breaking several tackles on a punt return, running 30 yards to the URI 14-yard line. Two runs by Coke, the second from two yards out, gave the Bears a 17-7 advantage with 3:40 left in the third quarter.

The Rams got back in the game after getting great field position at the Brown 11-yard line. Lowrie scored on a one-yard run early in the fourth quarter to bring the Rams to within four points, 17-13. Lowrie finished the game with 229 passing yards and 21 completions. Game #4 Holy Cross at Brown 10/11/14 Providence, R.I. Senior wide receiver Brian Strachan caught three touchdown pass, including one in overtime, and junior Grant Senne booted the game-winning 23-yard field goal in the second overtime, to lift Brown to a 27-24 non-league win over Holy Cross and give Bears’ head coach Phil Estes his 100th career victory at rain soaked Brown Stadium. The elements were a major factor throughout the game with heavy rain pelting the Brown Stadium natural turf. Holy Cross sent the game into overtime, 17-17, with a late touchdown, a one-yard run by Gabe Guild with 1:38 left on the clock. In the first overtime period, Bears’ senior quarterback Marcus Fuller (Ashland, OH) tossed a 25-yard strike to Strahan in the back of the end zone on the initial play from scrimmage to give the Bears a 24-17 lead. It took Holy Cross two plays to respond, with quarterback Peter Pujals throwing a 21-yard scoring pass to Kalif Raymond to knot the score, 24-24. Brown’s defense stiffened in the second overtime period, forcing a 39-yard field goal attempt by the Crusaders that flew wide left. The Bears methodically drove down the field on a series of runs by seniors Andrew Coke and Robert Grebenc to set up a 23-yard field goal by Senne, who split the uprights to give Brown the victory, 27-24. Strachan had a sensational game battling the elements, making eight catches for 98 yards, both career highs. Fuller completed 20-of-37 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns. Coke finished the game with a career best 89 yards on the ground. Pujals had a big day for the Crusaders, completing 30-of-44 passes for 252 yards and a touchdown. Brendan Flaherty registered a game high 11 receptions for 95 yards. Defensively, junior safety Zachary Gillen made his first career start for the Bears and responded with a game high 12 tackles, including eight solo hits. Senior inside linebacker Xavier Russo had eight tackles, while senior Zach Sparber and Ryan MacDonald had six tackles each, with MacDonald adding an interception. After a scoreless opening quarter, Holy Cross mounted a 14 play, 80 yard scoring drive, capped off by a nine yard touchdown run by Guild with 8:29 left in the second quarter, giving the Crusaders a 7-0 lead. A goal line interception by Brown’s MacDonald stopped another Crusaders’ drive making an interception with 2:02 left in the opening half. Brown came storming out of the locker room to open the second and tied the game, 7-7, on its opening possession, capping a 72-yard scoring drive with a little razzle-dazzle. Fuller pitched the ball to wide receiver Troy Doles (Saratoga, CA), who threw a 10-yard strike to diving Strachan in the right side of the end zone. The Bears grabbed their first lead of the game on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Fuller to wide open Strachan in the end zone with 3:46 left in the third quarter, to open up a 14-7 advantage after three quarters. Senne extended Brown’s lead to 17-7 with a career long 40-yard field goal with 10:40 left in the game. An interception by Patrick O’Neill at the Brown six-yard line stopped another Holy Cross drive with just over eight minutes to play. Junior Connor Fitzgerald got the Crusaders a little closer, trailing 17-10, with a 28-yard field goal at the 4:14 mark of the fourth quarter.
