Tahiti is the largest of the chain, and its capital, Papeete, is a great base from which to explore its treasures. But there’s more: gorgeous Moorea, perhaps the most beautiful isle; the less frequented destinations of Rangiroa and Raiatea; Bora Bora, the cradle of Polynesian culture; and the lush island of Huahine. Huahine Island, French Polynesia 2 Ultimate Water Experience The waters around French Polynesia have been called the richest aquarium on earth, teeming with a thousand species of fish, a nesting-ground for sea turtles and where one third of dolphin species can be found. Its crystal-clear waters are also home to the most exquisitely colored pearls in the world. Enjoy the island’s wonders on a catamaran to Moorea’s top snorkel spots. Spy Bora Bora’s under- the-sea wonders on a glass-bottom boat, and touch the freshwater eels in Huahine — where you can also feed them by hand. 3 More Time to Discover These Jewels Bora Bora Our More Ashore program gives you more time to explore these tropical playgrounds. Enjoy a late-night departure from Raiatea and overnight experiences in beautiful Bora Bora and Tahiti. Indulge in regional cuisine, sip vanilla-infused Tahitian cocktails, and dance to Polynesian music under stars that shine more brightly than any place on earth. 4 Unspoiled Treasures With a population of less than 300,000 across 188 islands, French Polynesia remains wonderfully unspoiled. Whether photographing Vaimahuta, one of the most breathtaking waterfalls on Tahiti, Pearl Farm, Tahiti beachcombing along Rangiroa’s pink-sand beach, or going on a photography expedition in Moorea, you’ll get swept away by the untouched beauty of these remote islands. 5 Small Ship Experience Set sail with Pacific Princess® on a small-ship, and delight in an elegant ambience combined with the amenities of a fine resort, as you sail to some of the most remote regions on the planet. Indulge in fresh menus by award-winning chefs. Enjoy live entertainment and musical revues. Relax and rejuvenate at the Lotus Spa®. Revel in the best sleep at sea on the Princess Luxury Bed. Do it all with ease as Pacific Princess® you sail to stunning destinations and new adventures each day. Page 1 of 5 The 3600km cable concept grew from a ‘twinkle in the eye’ of regional leaders into an International Treaty signed in April 2017, and a delivery and operating contract between the four national operators agreed in Auckland, New Zealand in November 2018. The cable installation was declared complete earlier this year, on time and within budget despite the prevailing global crisis. Today, leaders celebrated the further collaboration between Avaroa Cable in the Cook Islands and OPT in French Polynesia which has put in place the first ever live fibre cable internet connectivity from the Cook Island to the global internet. This will enable the transformation of the internet user experience in Rarotonga and Aitutaki in the Cook Islands, supercharging their connections. The Manatua One Polynesia Cable Project is the first international collaboration of its kind in the Pacific and has been seen as a future model for cooperation. The initiative aims to transform the affordability, speed, reliability and resilience of regional connectivity.

  • The Pitcairn Islands the World’S Largest Fully Protected Marine Reserve
A fact sheet from March 2015 The Pitcairn Islands The world’s largest fully protected marine reserve Overview In March 2015, the United Kingdom declared the world’s largest fully protected marine reserve in the remote waters surrounding the Pitcairn Islands in the South Pacific Ocean. The designation marks the first time any government has combined creation of a fully protected marine area with detailed plans for surveillance and enforcement that include use of the most up-to-date technology available. This approach sets a new standard for the comprehensive monitoring of protected areas. In 2013, The Pew Charitable Trusts and The National Geographic Society joined the local government, the Pitcairn Island Council, in submitting a proposal calling for creation of a marine reserve to protect these spectacular waters. The Pitcairn Islands Marine Reserve spans 834,334 square kilometres (322,138 square miles). Together with the Chagos Marine Reserve in the Indian Ocean, designated in 2010, the United Kingdom has created the world’s two biggest fully protected marine areas, totalling 1,474,334 square kilometres (569,243 square miles). Through these actions, the United Kingdom—caretaker of the fifth-greatest amount of marine habitat of any country in the world—has established its place as a global leader in ocean conservation. Pitcairn Islands Marine Reserve Traditional and cultural non-commercial fishing by the Pitcairn islanders and their visitors is permitted within 2 nautical miles of the summit of 40 Mile Reef and in a transit zone between Pitcairn and 40 Mile Reef. © 2015 The Pew Charitable Trusts Encompassing 99 per cent of Pitcairn’s exclusive economic zone, the Pitcairn Islands Marine Reserve is about 3½ times the size of the land area of the United Kingdom.
