In the earlier part of his career, Ricketts undertook research at Northwestern University on blastomycosis and later at the University of Chicago on and Rocky Mountain spotted fever In 1909, Ricketts became interested in typhus due to an outbreak in Mexico City and the apparent similarity of the disease to spotted fever. He named it Rickettsia prowazeki, after Howard Taylor Ricketts (1871)-1910) and German zoologist Prowazek, who both died of this disease. In 2007, a new strain of Gram- negative bacteria was named after Rocha Lima, Bartonella rochalimae Prof. Muhammad Akram Hossain, Ricketssia 4 Frank Macfarlane Burnet , Australian biologist. Es una enfermedad sistémica, de moderada a severa, producida por la infección del endotelio vascular de pequeños vasos de la mayoría de órganos y tejidos. Es la más letal de las infecciones transmitidas por garrapatas y desde su descubrimiento, hace cerca de 100 años, todavía se presenta, aunque esporádicamente, de forma persistente, y a pesar de que se cuenta con antibióticos efectivos, la mortalidad sigue siendo de mas del 10% y los pacientes requieren terapia intensiva durante la infección si esta no es diagnosticada y tratada a tiempo. It is an obligate intracellular parasite of 8 Trombiculid mites, in which natural transmission is maintained from female to its eggs 9 (transovarial transmission) and from the eggs to adults (transtadial transmission). With a 10 genome of only 2.4– 2.7 Mb, it has the most repeated DNA sequences among bacteria. It is 11 transmitted by mite larvae (chiggers) to humans and rodents through accidental bite. Naosuke 12 Hayashi first described it in 1920, giving the name Theileria tsutsugamushi , but was renamed to 13 Orientia tsutsugamushi in 1995, owing to its unique properties.
