Monthly Parish News September 2015 !!GREAT NEWS!!

CAR PARK REFURBISHMENT Following some extensive works at the end of July and beginning of August, there have now been significant improvements to the Church Car Park. It now comprises of an even surface made up of a grid system —by GRID FORCE—that is filled with crushed stone and provides a permeable surface through which water drains into the ground beneath. The remaining border will be planted with a new hedge-row hopefully being supplied “Free of charge” by the Woodland Trust in February. Car Park bay marking is to be reviewed with the contractor during September including specific disabled bays. No lighting is planned at this stage as it is uncertain exactly what is required and/or permissible.

Car Park Before Car Park After CHURCH HALL NEW HEATING SYSTEM During the last few weeks of July a new heating system has been installed in the hall and comprises of radiators to the toilets, office and lobby which can be operated separately to the hall. A second system of two fan assisted radiators have been installed in the hall and the whole system is much more efficient than that which it replaced and will be more economic to operate. No complaints about being too hot please!!

We are continuing to investigate ways to resolve other issues affecting the hall given that it is now being used for Family Services on Sundays.

MINISTERIAL MUSINGS As I sit and muse over what I am to write for this months ‘Musings’ I was aware that even though we were looking at the start of the new academic year we are affectively still in the middle of the holiday season. St Botolph’s Mother’s Union Report

Our July meeting saw us pitting our wits to answer the tricky questions put to us by Judeth in her summer quiz! After a somewhat puzzling time, we again enjoyed a lovely meal pre- pared by Doris and her team. Thanks to them and to Judeth for organising such an interesting and stimulating event. Instead of an August meeting, we held our summer barbecue to support the ‘Away From It All’ holidays provided for needy families by our Diocesan Mothers’ Union. Unlike last year, we were blessed with good weather and enjoyed a lovely warm evening in Anne and Alan’s beautiful garden. A sum of £366.50 was raised towards this very good cause. Many thanks to Anne and Alan for inviting us again and to all who helped in any way to make this such an enjoyable event. Our September meeting will be held in the church hall as usual, on Wednesday 9th September where we shall be looking at all the projects in the Diocese supported my Mothers’ Union. All are welcome. TUESDAY GROUP On 7th July we were given an amusing talk by Joyce Godfrey on the Kaleidoscope of Life. For those of us old enough to remember, she took us down memory lane once again, beginning with the Second World War years, carrying your gas mask around with you, rushing to get down the air raid shelter and grandad wanting to go back and fetch his false teeth which he had forgotten. She talked about first days at school, the ink wells in the desks, playground and street games, and holidays at the seaside. She went on to tell us about her early adult life, starting work, first boyfriends, going to dances at the Palais in Nottingham, and going to stay with her friend Betty who had moved to the north of England.

Sue Hutton from Shepshed Photographic Club was our speaker on 4th August. Sue talked about different cameras and their uses (nothing too technical) and then showed us a series of photographs she had taken; she pointed out the mistakes and gave us tips on how they could have been improved. Thank you to her technical assistant who set up the equipment.

On Tuesday 23rd June St Botolph’s Primary School was one of 8 primary schools from and Warwickshire to visit Neovia Logistics, Desford, Leicester for their seventh Eco Day. The event was a fantastic opportunity to showcase our environmental work and to see what other Primary schools have been doing. Mrs Pepper, Head Teacher said, “It was such a great opportunity for the children to share their Eco projects with other schools and to have to present in front of large number of adults. It is projects like this that help to develop the children’s confidence and a chance to work with our wider community.” Our Year 3 and 4 Eco Councillors created their own display to show the other children and the representatives from Neovia Logistics what our school does to be eco-friendly. They even used an Augmented Reality App to share some of their projects. The 6 children then performed a song explaining the importance of looking after our world. Vicky Rousell, Transport Management Team Leader, Neovia Logistics said. “The presentation from St Botolph’s was outstanding, the bravery of the children to stand and sing in front of 100 people they did not know and sing with such delight and attitude was a pleasure to see. The dedication of the children in the work they do to protect the environment displayed in their displays and in talking to the children is a credit to your school “ Later in the day to highlight the importance of Eco initiatives from around the world, Dave Shaw – The Rainforest Man, enthralled children and adults alike with his stories, artefacts and live creatures from his travels. The day closed with an award ceremony where each child was presented with a certificate and a goody bag and each school received a commemorative plaque and cheque for £250, to go towards our Eco projects.

The Shepshed Foodbank was formed in March 2014 to cater for local people who were finding themselves in desperate need. In April 2015, Shepshed Town Council kindly offered us the chance to use the former changing rooms at the Glenmore Centre as a permanent base. They have now been totally refurbished and provide ample space for our ever diminishing stock. The Foodbank is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1.45-2.45 and is run by a group of hardworking, conscientious volunteers. At present, we are distributing fifty food parcels a week to families with children, senior citizens, couples and single people. All our recipients meet stringent criteria which are monitored on a monthly basis. All enquiries are highly confidential. A food parcel may contain: tins of meat, soup, beans and fruit, pasta and pasta sauce, bread and fresh fruit and vegetables. Eggs are given out fortnightly and where stock allows we give out sugar, tea, coffee and some toiletries like shower gel or shampoo. Our recipients are all so very grateful for their parcels and it is quite humbling to talk to them and learn about their situations. Each and everyone of us could fall upon hard times and by supporting the Shepshed Foodbank you will be helping members of your community who are experiencing those hard times right now.

We desperately need: tins of meat, soup, fish, vegetables and fruit. Pasta and pasta sauces Sugar, tea, coffee, instant hot chocolate and Cereals We have boxes placed around the village-in Asda, Tesco, the Co-op, the Glenmore Centre, the Volunteer Bureau, in St Winefride’s Church and in St Botolph’s Church. Every single donation is welcome and will make a difference. Thank you. S J Smith, Secretary Shepshed Foodbank.

Dear Friends, Church Urban Fund have been busy finalising details for an exciting community event to be held throughout Advent. To make it work, we are looking to our network for support. The Advent Sleepout Challenge 2015 This Advent we will be asking people all over England to give up a night of comfort and organise their own sponsored sleepouts with their friends, families, churches and community groups. Christmas is a time for sharing, spreading love and showing others that we care. The Advent Sleepout Challenge will bring communities together and give hope and support to thousands of people across England. Transforming a space into a stable Over 2000 years ago, Mary and Joseph were forced to sleep in a stable and we want as many people as possible to take this as inspiration to create their own Advent ‘stable’. This could be in churches, community halls, scout huts, local schools or even garden sheds. How you transform the space is up to you, but most importantly, we want everyone to come together to have fun, share the experience and of course, raise as much sponsorship money as possible. How to get involved We will be launching all information including a website and resources at the beginning of September. Register your interest now by emailing our team at [email protected] or call 0207 898 1091 for more information. In September we will be back in touch with all the resources that you can share within your church and community. We need lots of people to get involved to make this a success and to transform more lives. Best regards, The Church Urban Fund Team

NEW BABY MEAL DEAL Last December two members of our congregation, Hannah Prentice and Sarah Parr, had a new baby. Many of us will know that the first few days and weeks (years if we’re honest) can be a little chaotic and we thought it would be a nice idea to gift them with a weeks worth of evening meals for their family. A number of our church community agreed to get involved with this and both the Prentice and Parr family were extremely appreciative of the support they re- ceived at this busy time.

As a result we would like to continue to do this for other Church members as and when there is a new arrival in their family. We would like to invite others to get involved – what we’re looking for is:

1. The email/mobile details of people interested in helping out 2. A commitment, if you’re available when the new baby arrives, to cook an evening meal for the whole family – details of allergies/ intolerances/preferences will be given to you 3. Deliver the meal at a convenient time – again contact details will be given to you Collect any bowls/tupperware etc when they’ve finished their meal If we have enough volunteers and support we could expand this service to include those who have recently come out of hospital for other reasons or even those who have had siblings baptised at the Church, our hospitality is a great way to show that the Church in their community cares.

Please let me know if you would like more information or would like to get involved, thanks Keleigh

ST JAMES' MOTHERS' UNION REPORT

For our monthly meeting in July we enjoyed a lovely tea in the 'Victorian' tea-room at Lubcloud Farm. The photo shows Janet with our recently- enrolled new members, Joy Duerden, Glenis Grant and Christine Hall.

Then in August we had a half-day outing to Byrkley Park Garden Centre near Burton-on-Trent. It is very extensive and interesting and nearly all under-cover, useful as the weather turned a bit wet. We had a generous-sized tea there, with a selection of sandwiches and cakes on individual plates which we thought were for serving several folk! As well as gardening-related items there are depts, for clothes, homeware etc. so we returned to the coach with a variety of plants, other goods and two live goldfish!

On September 21st we will hold our Songs of Praise, at 2.30 in the Hall, with tea & biscuits. The speaker will be our curate, Rev'd Ed, and we look forward to being joined again by members from other MU branches in both deaneries.

We continue to remember those who are unwell with our love and prayers, especially Viv Allsop who is now in a Home. Lesley Bates.

Following the vision of the Quiet Garden Trust, which began in 1992, and has since spread worldwide, we aim in Leicestershire to offer an experience of spiritual renewal under the abundance of God’s love, and within the beauty of a garden, to those of any faith or none.

Silence is the essence of a Quiet Garden Day. You will be gently guided into periods of silence by a leader who will give some ideas to help personal reflection. You can use the ideas as you will, simply walking, sitting or sleeping, as you choose - painting or writing. Each Day begins at 10 am and ends at 4 pm. We conclude each Day with a short act of Christian worship.

To book: contact the Host, using the telephone number or email address given. Numbers in brackets after the venue indicate the maximum number that can be accommodated. Venues marked with a (D) may present difficulties for some disabled people – the Host can advise.

WILDLIFE GARDEN Last September 20 people of all ages really enjoyed the ‘hay-making morning,’ drinks were supplied and the hay was added to the log pile which by now must be the home of many insects, and maybe some small mammals, all of which are vital to the conservation of God’s world. Please come at 10.30am on Saturday 19th September when we will be hay-making again, all tools will be provided and the rangers from Quadron will be there to guide us. During the previous week the mowing will take place, and as the plants are drying their seeds will drop ready for natural germination; (Quadron is the company used by Charnwood Borough Council). We also intend to bare some patches of soil and to scatter seeds. If you have any seeds or plants to spare bring them along. Again we will arrange refreshments.

We have heard, on the grapevine, that there are people who are unhappy with the untidy appearance of the garden. Please consider that this is our small contribution for the conservation of God’s world. Yes, it does look untidy especially along the fence, but we are taking the advice of experts and patience must be exercised. The matter of the untidy edge is being addressed. A purposeful wildlife garden does not happen overnight. Also give some thought to the reliance of human life on insect pollination, life cannot be sustained without pollination, without insects there is no life.

Do come along and help us to achieve our aims and to find out from the experts exactly what we are aiming to achieve.
