This took place on the 25th September, three days after our Annual General Meeting. The launch was combined with a day school on “Mapping the Past” which was held under the auspices of the South Pennine History Forum, a group of local history societies from across the South Pennines. Much of our efforts since the launch have been directed towards promoting sales of the book and during the year we have held several exhibitions and book-signing events. The production of the book has been a monumental task for the Society and I would like to pay tribute to all the hard work that went into it by the publications committee. But all the effort has been worth it; the book is a wonderful production which enhances our reputation as a local historical society.

This was obviously a great loss to his family, and also to his friends, all to whom we extend our heart-felt condolences. Peter had only just commenced his service with the committee and was looking forward to help the Society grow. His loss is our sad loss. Your committee is still struggling to operate as well as we would wish due to a reduction in the number of trustees. There just aren’t enough to carry on the business of the Society properly. This year Charles Baumann has left the committee after many years of service when he undertook various tasks such as chairing lectures, organizing fund raising Flea Markets with me, publicising our events and other ventures as the need arose.

This was obviously a great loss to his family, and also to his many friends, all to whom we extend our heart-felt condolences. Tony has been of great help to the Society during his all too short a tenure as committee member, taking on all sorts of tasks, particularly those of a physical nature now becoming beyond the reach of some of us. The Society is in a poorer state for his passing. Your committee is still struggling to operate as well as we would wish through lack of committee members. There just aren’t enough to carry on the business of the Society properly. Recent fall outs from the committee include our hard working publicity officer, Charles Baumann, who has resigned due to family and other commitments however he has intimated that he would be available to help out on occasion subject to his availability from his other extensive interests.

    MEDIA RELEASE Embargoed until 00.01 on Wednesday 21st October 2020 True extent of poverty in Greater Manchester revealed Greater Manchester Poverty Action are calling for urgent steps to tackle poverty as new analysis reveals already high levels of poverty in Greater Manchester are likely to have been exacerbated by the pandemic. New analysis of poverty in Greater Manchester launched today reveals that: 620,000 people are living in poverty 200,000 children live in households with an income below the poverty line 157,000 households are experiencing fuel poverty Around a quarter of a million people are claiming help towards housing costs 20% of all jobs in Greater Manchester are paid less than the Real Living Wage. The data, gathered as part of Greater Manchester Poverty Action’s ‘GM Poverty Monitor 2020’, finds signs that already high levels of poverty in the city region are likely to have got worse during the COVID-19 pandemic: The number of people claiming unemployment-related benefits in Greater Manchester rose by 93% between March and August 2020. There has been a sharp increase in the number of people claiming Universal Credit in each of the city region’s ten boroughs. Campaigners are calling for tackling poverty to be put at the heart of the city region’s recovery plan from the pandemic, but say efforts to address poverty locally need to be supported by national policy. Graham Whitham, Director of Greater Manchester Poverty Action said, “The Poverty Monitor highlights the worrying scale of poverty across our city region. Even before the pandemic, Greater Manchester was home to some of the highest rates of poverty in the country.

Transport Issues and the Neighbourhood Plan Joanne Betts, Principal Officer Transport and Highways Policy, Oldham Council, gave a detailed presentation on local, Borough-wide and Greater Manchester-wide transport issues. She said that the Neighbourhood Plan needs to be consistent with the 2040 Greater Manchester Transport Strategy (GMSF), the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework and Oldham’s Local Plan. The 2040 Transport Strategy vision is for 'World class connections that support long-term, sustainable economic growth and access to opportunity for all’ and includes an ambitious plan to establish a fully integrated, high capacity transport system across Greater Manchester. In addition to the 2040 Transport Strategy a 15 step plan entitled “Made to Move” was issued in December 2017 by the Mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham, who has committed to easing congestion and making Manchester a “greener” place to live. A “green summit” was held on 21st March and the Mayor’s office is expected to make an announcement tomorrow. The GMSF must include a robust transport base and TfGM are undertaking the concept planning and modelling for the strategic development sites, which cross borough boundaries, for example the Northern Gateway which includes parts of Oldham, Rochdale and Bury, identified throughout Greater Manchester in the GMSF.

    BOARSHURST BAND PRESENT TRADITIONAL AUTUMN CONCERT AT OLDHAM COLISEUM Boarshurst Silver Band present their traditional Autumn concert at Oldham Coliseum Theatre on Friday 20 September, combining Albert Hall classics and original brass band pieces including Jerusalem, Pomp and Circumstance No 1, Fantasia and Rule Britannia.. The 27 strong Boarshurst Silver Band are one of the top bands in the North West today – a tribute to their long and distinguished history. Celebrating their 170th year, the band are past winners of the prestigious North West Area Championships, National Brass Band of Great Britain, are current 1st Section Butlin’s Champions. Boarshurst Silver Band was founded in 1849 at Boarshurst School in Greenfield. Rehearsals took place in a loft above the stale at Casey Mill and during the summer months under the railway arch at Arthurs Lane. In 1979 new headquarters were established with the purchase of the Boarshurst Band Club, which was close to the original home of the band on Greenbridge Lane acquired some 80 years earlier. In 2000 the band commissioned Peter Graham to create the song Northern Landscapes, which was used as both National Third Section Area Test Piece and the Third Section Test Piece for the National Pontins Brass Band Championships. In 2016 the band featured in a special advert on ITV during the Queen’s 90th Birthday celebrations, performing on a stage on the Coronation Street cobbles with opera singer Katherine Jenkins. At this year’s famous Saddleworth Whit Friday Brass Band contests they won prizes at Uppermill, Scouthead and Austerlands, Lees and Springhead, Greenfield and Dobcross.
