Reviews. Wow! Why can't todays movies be like this? Genius. An inspiration. The finest representation of Charles Dickens Oliver Twist. I would be as bold to say that this representation of Oliver Twist is by far the finest of all Dickens transitions from literature to screen. This Masterpiece was so representational of its time that it even inspired the manufacture of products deemed to be iconic of the time such as London Distilled Gin known as Oliver Twist London Distilled Gin (See it here http://www.olivertwistgin.com . The film and literary work alike portray the real hardships and massive cultural divide that formed Dickensian London. Although the film is a softer interpretation of the book it is a fantastic tool for educating people about these times. Ensure you watch this classic and if you have not done so yet read the classic novel. Oliver Twist. This film has nothing to recommend it. First, it is a dreadful adaptation of the novel. It leaves out several major characters and episodes. Virtually gone are Mr. and Mrs. Bumble, who know the truth of Oliver's parentage. Gone is undertaker Sowerberry and his sadistic family, who do their best to break Oliver's spirit. But most important of all, gone is Oliver's nemesis Monks, the man whose whole future rests on ruining Oliver's life. Scenes where Brownlow witnesses, and then rescues, Oliver from the abusive police and courts are eliminated, so we don't understand why Brownlow takes an interest in the boy, or why the boy trusts Brownlow. So much for dramatic tension and character development. Second, the acting ranges from terrible to barely adequate. Dickie Moore, acting like a plucky male Shirley Temple, is horribly miscast as Oliver. As soon as he opens his mouth you know this boy has never been beaten, never gone hungry, never been cold and friendless and desperate. The whole point of Oliver's character is that he HAS been through all these things all his life, and yet refuses to become one of Fagin's thieves. We're supposed to root for Oliver because he is noble, and because evil forces (including the missing Mr. Monks) are actively trying to destroy him. Dickie Moore and the script convey none of this, so it's really hard to root for Oliver. Nancy (Doris Lloyd) is the only truly sympathetic character in this movie, but you never believe that she wouldn't just leave Bill Sykes and the gang, because this Bill is a pale shadow of the vicious, threatening presense that is supposed to have complete power over her. The only thing the film makers got right is the final, disturbing scene between Fagin and Oliver in the jail house. What a strange choice to jettison major fundamental plot elements, and yet depict this scene so faithfully. Lastly, the sound is very scratchy, but then, it's not worth the effort to hear the dialogue anyway. If you want to see two excellent "Oliver Twist" adaptations, I highly recommend David Lean's 1948 movie with Alec Guiness as Fagan and John Howard Davies as a very credible Oliver, or the brilliantly acted 1999 made-for-TV mini-series with an outstanding cast, led by Robert Lindsay (Fagin), Andy Sirkis (terrifying as Bill Sykes)and Michael Kitchen (Brownlow). Both versions take liberties with the story, but then all versions do, and at least those two are top quality. Heck, even the 1968 musical 'Oliver!' has more dramatic tension and believalbe characterizations than this ill-concieved, badly-executed 1933 film. Oliver! You're almost there! Premiered in the West End in 1960, the musical has been through many revivals and updates over the years including the famous film version in 1968 with Oliver Reed, Shani Wallis, Ron Moody, Jack wild and Mark Lester. We last performed Oliver at Kingsbridge Community College in 2008 and it has been a pleasure to revisit this old favourite. As ever, our students rose to the challenges of this updated and re-scored script and worked extremely hard on presenting a polished, slick and professional looking performance for you to enjoy. More so than any other year, our student cast and crew have taken ownership of this production, their professionalism and effort between rehearsals has been simply phenomenal. There are too many people to thank in this brief note, but I can tell you that lots and lots of KCC staff and students put in hour after hour to support the cast. For its first half-hour or so, Carol Reed's Oscar-winning 1968 film version does a masterful job of telling its story almost exclusively through song and dance. Once nine- year-old orphan Oliver Twist (Mark Lester) falls in with such underworld types as pickpocket Fagin (Ron Moody) and murderous thief Bill Sykes (Oliver Reed), it becomes necessary to inject more and more dialogue, and the film loses some of its momentum. But not to worry; despite such brutal moments as Sikes' murder of Nancy (Shani Wallis), the film gets back on the right musical track, thanks in great part to Theatrical release poster by Howard Terpning (Wikipedia) Onna White's exuberant choreography and the faultless performances by Moody and by Jack Wild as the Artful Dodger. Transforming novels into musicals usually entails significant complications due to the divergent narrative techniques employed by novelists and composers or librettists. In spite of these difficulties, Dickens’s novels have continually been utilized as sources for stage and film musicals. This dissertation initially explores the elements of the author’s novels which render his works more suitable sources for musicalization than the texts of virtually any other canonical novelist. Subsequently, the project examines some of the larger and more complex issues associated with the adaptation of Dickens’s works into musicals, specifically, the question of preserving the overt Englishness of one of the most conspicuously British authors in literary history while simultaneously incorporating him into a genre that is closely connected with the techniques, talents, and tendencies of the American stage. Although the boys have a successful mobile fishmonger business, Stan convinces Ollie that they should become fishermen too, cutting out the middleman and making more profit. Ollie agrees, but making the boat they buy seaworthy is not an easy task.
