UHF4/94/15 Whitlock Report Tirnascobe often spelt Ternascobe in the local records is a townland of 538 acres. Both Tirnascobe and Altaturk townlands are now in the parish of Kildarton. Before 1836 at which date the parish boundaries were re-organised, Tirnasobe was in the parish of Armagh and Allaturk was in the parish of Loughgall. Both townlands belonged to the Estate of the Rt Hon. the Earl of Charlemont. Maps accompany this report which may help the client, the parishes of Kildarton, Armagh and Loughgall are found in the north• west section of County Armagh. The client's suppositions concerning her family proved to be true, confirmed, by a baptism found in the Armagh Church of Ireland registers. r. The families place of residence is given as Altaturk, previously in the parish of Loughgall. The Tithe Applotment Book 1830 for the parish of Loughgall lists a John Whiteford \_~\~~ Legavillyin the townlandleasing 20of Mullinasilleyacres, 3 roods,having10 perches.11 acres, 2 roods and a Morris Whitelock in Several miscellaneous estate records for the area were looked at two and references ~ \?l:- to Whitlocks found. Nicholas Whitlock of Loughgall is a churchwarden of Armagh Cathedral in 1798 where John and Susanna Whitlocks children were baptised. The other reference is found in a rental dated 1721-24 for the Manor of Castle Dillon property of the Hon. Samuel Molyneaux, a John Whitlock of Lagwilly (sic) leased 67 acres, 2 roods quite a substantial acreage. Several Freeholders registers for Co Armagh were consulted. '=:?- The register for 1710-1726 (T2731/2) lists John Whitlock leasing part ofLegavilly 67 (\1\ I acres :ITomNathaniel St Andrew and Lady Eliz. Diana his wife, registered, 25 Mar. 1731. In the return of registered :ITeeholders in the Barony of Oneilland West 1813-21 we find 3 Whitlocks. No 2234 Richard W}1jtlock leasing and residing lTl Legavilly Richard's lease is for the ~IO'b lives of John, Richard andM. Whitlock registered 18 Apr. 1814. ~ No 2407 Richard Whitlock (perhaps son of the above Richard) is registered 2 Nov. 1819. Leasing and residing in Legavilly. The lease is held for the lives of John, Richard and Maurice Whitlock. Maurice Whitlock is named as the leaseholder of this property in the Tithe Applotment Book of 1830 and is still in possession 1864 according to the Griffith Valuation. AI The final entry in the Return of 1813-21 is for John Whitlock of Altaturk registered ~~/' Names1819. A look at the townlands map accompanying this report shows us only a few miles separate Tirnascobe, Altaturk and Legavilly, east of Armagh. As the name Page 1 WhitlocklWhitlocke is uncommon, we can presume the Whitlocks of Altaturk, Tirnascobe, and Legavilly are related, and that this is the client's family. The Armagh Church of Ireland registers could be searched for the deaths of John and Susannan Whitlock.
