Corporate social responsibility as a tool for social change: A case analysis of the UNESCO-WTA Tour partnership for global gender equality Master of Science 2011 Courtney Szto Graduate Department of Exercise Sciences University of Toronto Abstract This research project critically questions the power relations inherent in the use of corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a tool for international development. My case study focuses on the partnership between UNESCO and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), which advocates for global gender equality. This discourse analysis seeks to expose the social inequities that may result from CSR by using the theoretical framework of Orientalism and the methodologies of postcolonial feminism and intersectionality. The results suggest that an outdated understanding of gender as the axis of discrimination hinders the attainment of gender equality. Furthermore, Girl Effect type initiatives that promote third-wave feminism are observed to reproduce social inequities through the perpetuation of global capitalism. Key recommendations include a reconceptualization of gender (equality) that accounts for the intersectionality of identities, holistic context specific solutions, and the use of socio-cultural analysis for CSR programming. ii Acknowledgements I have had the privilege of being educated, mentored, and inspired by some outstanding people throughout my graduate studies. Dr. Atkinson, yogi for my mind, has been my tour guide through the wonderland that is socio-cultural (pardon me, physical cultural) studies, and it is because of him that I have enjoyed my tumble down the rabbit hole and continue to explore its depths. Dr. Sherene Razack, her class provided me with an extremely educational (and depressing) first semester of graduate school. Although, her teachings were difficult to digest at the time they are prevalent throughout this thesis and I know that because of her it is a far more comprehensive document. iii Dr. Peter Donnelly, who has been very supportive and encouraging throughout my time as a graduate student, has taught me how to be critical about international development while still being optimistic. (Signature) ……………………………………………………………………………… 1 Abstract Elite tennis players are required to perform on a variety of tennis court surfaces which differ in mechanical characteristics, such as friction and hardness, influencing their performance and risk of injury. To understand the influence of surfaces on performance and injury risk, three studies were conducted to investigate tennis players’ perceptions and biomechanical responses during tennis-specific movements on different court surfaces. In study 1, tennis players perceptions of acrylic and clay courts were identified following a thematic inductive analysis of semi-structured interviews (n = 7) to develop of a series of visual analogue scales (VAS) to quantify perceptions during studies 2 and 3. Perceptions of predictability of the surface and players’ ability to slide and change direction emerged, in addition to anticipated perceptions of grip and hardness. Study 2 aimed to examine the influence of court surfaces and prior clay court experience on perceptions and biomechanical characteristics of tennis-specific skills.

A few weeks after retiring from tournament tennis, Stefanie Graf came to Filderstadt to watch the tournament. Martina Hingis raised her racket in the direction of her former rival as if to say, “Come down, do you want to play for me?” Stefanie Graf laughed and refused the offer. She had in the meantime established herself as a keen observer of the sport she had so dominated for over a decade. The final was over in no time at all. Martina Hingis seemed to be in a hurry to win her third Porsche at her sixth appearance at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.

This discourse analysis seeks to expose the social inequities that may result from CSR by using the theoretical framework of Orientalism and the methodologies of postcolonial feminism and intersectionality. The results suggest that an outdated understanding of gender as the axis of discrimination hinders the attainment of gender equality. Furthermore, Girl Effect type initiatives that promote third-wave feminism are observed to reproduce social inequities through the perpetuation of global capitalism. Key recommendations include a reconceptualization of gender (equality) that accounts for the intersectionality of identities, holistic context specific solutions, and the use of socio-cultural analysis for CSR programming. ii Acknowledgements I have had the privilege of being educated, mentored, and inspired by some outstanding people throughout my graduate studies.

By simultaneously enhancing performance and overall experience in athletic settings, one potentially reaches a higher propensity for flow, an optimal mental state of heightened experience and performance (Jackson, 1996; Kee & Wang, 2008). Mindfulness, specifically Langerian Mindfulness, has previously been shown to be useful in increasing one’s performance in a variety of settings (Langer et al., 2010). Given that Langerian Mindfulness has been shown to increase performance, this study intends to investigate whether Langerian Mindfulness can increase performance in an athletic setting, while also increasing one’s propensity for experiencing the flow state. So far, there are a limited number of interventions developed for athletes to enhance their performance through mindfulness techniques (Birrer, Rothlin & Morgan, 2012).

Due to this inherent link with masculinity, American women were kept from participating in sports to protect their feminine nature. As the years passed of continuous oppression, only a small handful of women were able to fight back and make a name for themselves as prominent and successful athletes. To combat the larger issue of gender discrimination in America, a women’s movement was launched in the 1960s and 1970s.
