He concluded that, “What is actu- ally being invaded here is America and its hold on its theoretical na- tional pastime. We’re not sure exactly when this happened—possi- bly while you were busy watching a Yankees-Red Sox game—but this isn’t just America’s sport anymore. It is Latin America’s sport.” While it may not have gone that far yet, the presence of Latino players in baseball, especially in Major League Baseball, has grown enormously. In 1990, the Racial and Gender Report Card recorded that 13 percent of MLB players were Latino. In the 2009 MLB Racial and Gender Report Card, 27 percent of the players were La- tino. The all-time high was 29.4 percent in 2006. Teams from South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean enter the World Baseball Classic with superstar MLB players on their ros- ters. Stark wrote, “The term, ‘baseball game,’ won’t be adequate to describe it. These games will be practically a cultural symposium— where we provide the greatest Latino players of our time a monstrous stage to demonstrate what baseball means to them, versus what baseball now means to us.” American youth have an array of sports to play besides base- ball, including soccer, basketball, football, and hockey. -

ARTHUR ABRAHAM / GILBERTO RAMIREZ ÓSCAR VALDEZ / EVGENY GRADOVICH JOSE RAMÍREZ / MANNY PEREZ SPLIT ON SUPER BOWL 50 PREDICTIONS LAS VEGAS, NV (February 3, 2016) -- Before they enter the ring for their super brawls, World Boxing Organization (WBO) super middleweight world champion ARTHUR ABRAHAM, undefeated contenders GILBERTO "Zurdo" RAMIREZ, ÓSCAR VALDEZ and JOSE RAMÍREZ, former world champion EVGENY GRADOVICH, and dangerous veteran MANNY PEREZ took time out to make predictions on Super Bowl 50, which will pit the Denver Broncos against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, February 7. The six fighters will be featured in title fights on the Manny Pacquiao - Timothy Bradley world welterweight championship pay-per-view undercard, Saturday, April 9, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Promoted by Top Rank®, in association with MP Promotions, the Pacquiao vs. Bradley world championship event will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View® beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT. Abraham vs. Gilberto Ramirez will be co-promoted by Sauerland Event and Zapari Boxing Promotions. THE PREDICTIONS ARTHUR ABRAHAM “I like the Denver Broncos‘ chances to win Super Bowl 50, I like them a lot! Peyton Manning is one of the all- time greats, the oldest quarterback to lead a team to a Super Bowl berth. With his experience in clutch-time situations, he cannot be denied winning his third championship ring. I n addition, the Broncos have had THE best defense all season long, knowing how to penetrate the opposing team for errors. That could be compared to my style of boxing. -

Park Elevation and Long Ball Flight in Major League Baseball

Bloch ‘07 Kieran M. Coe ‘07 James K. Ebberson ‘07 Paul M. Sommers Department of Economics Middlebury College Middlebury, Vermont 05753 [email protected] 3 Park Elevation and Long Ball Flight in Major League Baseball Are ballparks at higher elevations more receptive to home run hitters? Three stadiums (Atlanta’s Turner Field, Arizona’s Bank One Ballpark, and Colorado’s Coors Field) are all over 1000 feet above sea level. If the thinner air at higher altitudes really matters, then high elevation ballparks should be relatively easy places in which to hit a home run. The purpose of this brief note is to test whether or not there is a relationship between the number of home runs hit by a home team’s opponents and the ballpark’s elevation above sea level, after accounting for differences in field dimensions. Table 1 gives the approximate elevation of the ballpark (measured in feet above sea level), the three dimensions along the left field foul line, to center field, and down the right field line (in feet), and the total number of home runs hit by visiting teams at each ballpark between 2002 and 2004. [We excluded the Montreal Expos, now the Washington Nationals, who before their move to the nation’s capital played 22 (21) “home” games in 2004 (2003) at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico.] All data are from The Sporting News [1]. -

We would like to welcome you and your friends and family to the 51st Anniversary of the Oktoberfest Race Weekend. It is our goal to provide area race fans and racers one of the finest stock car racing events in the upper Midwest to be a part of. We hope that you go home with many memories that you can reflect on for years to come. Oktoberfest started out as a two day race event in the 1970s and 1980’s. In the early 1990’s, it grew to three days and just a few years later became the four day tradition that still exists today. Further, fans are invited to stay with us in the popular camper village for up to a week. This year, starting on Monday October 5th right through Monday, October 12th. Oktoberfest is a racing event and experience that you cannot capture on an electronic device. It is something much more. It IS a real-life experience, one that leaves fans looking forward to the next year. Every year. It’s the chance to see old friends in the campground. Or in the Grandstands. The racing.... yes, it’s exciting. And there’s a LOT of it going on. Are there lots of race cars in different styles, and classes? Sure, there are. But it is the camaraderie of the racing family that makes a big event like Oktoberfest so special.
