MAY DAY WEEKEND – 1ST 2ND 3RD MAY CHILLAGOE CAR CAMP Chillagoe is 2hrs drive from Atherton, with only 15 km of good gravel road. Meet Saturday 8am at Duncan Ray’s place in Chillagoe. After lunch there will be an afternoon walk with Duncan and a caving trip. Cave is relatively easy with large chambers. Hat, water and good torch are essential. Sunday all day walk guided by Duncan. Bring lunch & smoko. S/R. Monday 1/2 day walk. Bring camping gear, cooking gear, food & drinking water for weekend. WEDNESDAY 5TH MAY MT MISCH See a diverse range in vegetation types as we climb a steady ridge into dark rainforest. See Kauris, native pines, stingers, old springboard cuts in long logged trees and an unusual garden array. Great views of the Tableland. Leave Tolga Post Office 8am, return by 3 pm. S/R Includes a 300m climb and a steepish 300m descent. Contact Andrew Ford: 4095 4728 SUNDAY 9TH MAY MEMBERS ONLY MT EMERALD Cooktown Walking Club members are invited. Meet at Tolga Post Office 8am. Grade moderate with 300m climb. Distance 9kms. This is a beautiful walk with great views. Opening 2pm – 4pm SUNDAY 16TH MAY GIBB CREEK GORGE Leave Atherton Old Post Office Gallery at 7.30am or 8am Mt St Bernard’s Herberton. Drive to Irvinebank. Should still be plenty of water in the gorge. Standard requirements. Swimming togs. Moderate walk. Contact Steve Russell: 4091 4686 WEDNESDAY 19TH MAY BULL CREEK Meet at Lake Eacham car park at 8am. Bull Creek is off Fuller Road, Gadgarra. Features 7km attractive mixed rain forest walk from Fuller Road with easy downhill to Bull Creek then uphill to Gadgarra Road. Long gaiters and long sleeved shirt essential. Grade easy. Old logging track, some level, some overgrown scrub. Car shuttle may be necessary. Contact Peter Tuck: 0408 772 254 SUNDAY 30TH MAY CAIRNS VISTAS This walk will leave at 8am from the end of Herald St. If coming from the Gillies Hwy, turn left at Gordonvale, continue along and turn left into Robert Rd. Veer left after the traffic light and turn the third right into Herald St. Continue to the end. The walk is from Bentley Park to White Rock with lots of rewarding views down to Cairns’ southern suburbs, the Trinity Inlet, to the Yarrabah Range and beyond. We will probably have to cut our way through some forest as the walk is not done very often. Some steep ascents and descents make it a moderate to strenuous undertaking. Back by mid afternoon. Moderate walk across country through open woodland, a boulder field and rainforest to visit an old favourite. Some hill climbs. Sheltered overhand in a rainforest setting. S/R plus swimmers. They drove cattle from their paddocks on Boar Pocket Road down the Gillies range along the highway and then down Hunt’s Track to Goldsborough valley. Steep climb up the Gillies (much like Robson Track) Leave green tank on the Gillies at 8.30am. Standard requirements. Moderate walk along an abandoned and overgrown forestry trail, below Kahlpahlim. Maybe an odd stinging tree. Beautiful rainforest and crystal clear creek. S/R plus swimmers. Hill climbs, WWII dugouts, open country, rainforest, swimming and great views. Meet 8am Davies Creek turnoff, Kennedy Highway. Small car shuffle. This is a 9 day, 8 night walk which takes in the three major peaks of Hinchinbrook Island as well as the Thornsborne trail. Each peak involves a 900m+ climb, off track. Grade is hard to very hard. Experienced walkers only. National Park permit allows maximum 6 people. Leaders: Peter Blackwood & Steve Russell.
