Meyer NUMBER OF PAGES: x, 334 -ii­ ABSTRACT Was there such a thing as "orthodoxy" in earliest Christianity? That was the question raised by Walter Bauer in his classic monograph, Orthodoxy and Heresy in Earliest Chrsitianity. Bauer argued that the traditional Eusebian reconstruction of the primitive church was markedly defected, and against that reconstruction, he contended that heretical movements of the second century had as good a claim to apostolic traditions as did the catholic movement. Although I agree with Bauer that the traditional reconstruction of the early church is unsound, I do not find that Bauer has offered a reconstruction engendering any firmer confidence. I challenge Bauer at two points. First, in chapter three, I attempt to determine whether Bauer's reconstruction makes sense of all the evidence. Then, I analyze the process by which groups come to self-consciousness. That is a two-sided matter. One is the fixing of a pool of acceptable diversity in which a group relates itself to the larger world of diversity (chapter four). The second is the process by which a group excludes various other diverse positions (chapter 5). Attention to these matters makes possible a more sensitive evaluation of the complexities that confronted the Christian community as it sought to define itself. Having confined my investigation to the most significant area of the Christian mission at the turn of the century, my work provides a fresh reconstruction of the primitive church in western Asia Minor at a time when the process of self-definition was becoming the controlling issue. -iii­ ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I wish to thank two professors, Dr. Ben Meyer of McMaster Univer:sity and Dr. Norbert Brox of Universitat Regensburg, who expanded my field of vision during my studies. In the last century and a half of New Testament scholarship, radical changes have been made to the traditional view of the character of earliest Christianity--a view that had been held by the majority within Christendom from the second century onwards. That view was that the earliest church was free from fundamentally diversive theological interpretations in its initial stages. SpeCifically, two points were made: first, "authentic apostolic tradition" was proclaimed consistently and without alteration in all areas of the primitive mission; and second, heresy was a later phenomenon and reflected

But nobody's going to want to read it!" Burton L. Mack, until his recent retirement a professor of New Testament at the School of Theology at Claremont, in southern California, and the author of a best-selling book about the origins of Christianity, was drumming his palms on a table in his living room not long ago and talking about the publication of a scholarly document that he believes radically undercuts Christianity's claim to be the religion of Jesus of Nazareth. Mack, although he taught future ministers, would not be displeased. He blames Christianity for contributing to centuries of U.S. wrongdoing, from wars against Native Americans to interventionism abroad. "They'll have to read it!" he declaimed. The document he was discussing is a reconstructed Greek text (with an immense scholarly apparatus) of "Q," as biblical scholars have named a hypothetical first-century work composed mostly of sayings of Jesus. The first installment was published last spring by the Belgian firm Peeters under the series title Documenta Q. Many scholars believe that Q served as a literary source ("Q" is short for Quelle, the German word for "source") for the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, which contain numerous parallel passages. Other scholars believe it never existed -- there are no manuscripts of Q or references to it in ancient literature. Contained in Q, or at least in the parallel passages of Matthew and Luke for which Q is the hypothetical source, are many of the teachings of Jesus that Christians placed near the heart of their faith: the Lord's Prayer, the Sermon on the Mount, the Beatitudes, the Golden Rule, and the famous admonition "You cannot serve God and Mammon." It would therefore seem at first glance as though Q were a thoroughly Christian text, not the threat to Christianity that Mack describes.

    ORTHODOXY AND HERESY IN EARLIEST CHRISTIANITY by Walter Bauer 1934 [Second German Edition by Georg Strecker] OPINIONS Walter Bauer’s Orthodoxy and Heresy has established itself as a classic refutation of the "myth" that "in the beginning" orthodoxy was there first and heresy was a deviation from the norm. Whatever one thinks of the thesis, one cannot bypass Bauer on early heresy any more that one can bypass Bultmann on Form Criticism or Harnack on the development of dogma. Today, it remains a good introduction to Christianity at the end of the first century and the beginning of the second century. Gerald Christianson Professor of Church History Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary This brilliant and pioneering monograph inaugurated a new era of scholarship in the study of the New Testament and Christian origins, especially in America. It argued that early Christianity did not begin with a unified orthodox belief, from which heresies broke off at a later time. Rather, Bauer demonstrated that diversity stood at the beginning, while an orthodox church emerged only after long controversies during the early centuries. During recent decades, the investigation of newly discovered texts, such as the Gnostic Library of Nag Hammadi in Egypt, have fully confirmed Bauer’s insights. There may be numerous details, which scholars today would see differently than Walter Bauer, whose word was first published in Germany sixty years ago. Nevertheless, Bauer’s book has remained the foundation for all modern scholarship in this field, and it is must- reading for all who want to explore early Christian Communities. It is still challenging, fresh, fascinating, and thought-provoking -- without any question of the truly great masterpieces of New Testament scholarship.

    The Impact of Walter Bauer’s Rechtgläubigkeit und Ketzerei im ältesten Christentum By HELMUT KOESTER (Harvard University, Emeritus) (written originally for the 2012 SBL conference in Chicago and delivered in absentia; here edited and augmented [in green print] by Robert Kraft, for 21 March 2013 PSCO session) More than eighteen-hundred years ago Tertullian wrote his book De praescriptione haereticorum.1 It was not a detailed refutation of the heresies. Rather, Tertullian argued that the heretics should not even be allowed into court. They had no right to exist because they were derivative. Orthodoxy existed first before the heresies emerged. Heretical teachers therefore did nothing but twist the existing orthodox beliefs into their abased falsehoods. This assumption was generally accepted in antiquity. It played a significant role in the formation of the canon, especially in the arguments that established the canon lists of the fourth century: only such writings should be admitted as had been there from the very beginning (“apostolic”) and had been useful to the building of the church from the very beginning. Tertullian’s Praescriptio also dominated later discussions well into the early twentieth century about heresies in the time of the beginnings of Christianity. It could be argued that Gottfried Arnold’s Unparteiische Kirchen- und Ketzer-Historie [Impartial (Non-confessional) History of the Church and Heresy], published in several volumes in the years 1699 and 1700 was an exception to this view. Arnold was one of the leading German pietists of the time.2 In protest to the Lutheran Orthodoxy he was looking for people of true piety, as distinct from those of orthodox theology, and he found those examples of true Christian faith especially in the more marginal and often heterodox Christians.
