ROZEN, JR.1 The present paper is the second of a series that treats the phylogeny and taxonomy of the larvae belonging to the bee family Anthophoridae. The first (Rozen, 1965a) dealt with the pollen-collecting tribes Eucerini and Centridini of the Anthophorinae. The present study encompasses the following tribes, all of which consist solely of cuckoo bees: Protepeolini, Epeolini, Nomadini, Ammobatini, Holcopasitini, Biastini, and Neolarrini. For reasons presented below, these tribes are believed to represent a monophyletic group, and consequently all are placed in the Nomadinae. It seems likely that the cleptoparasitic tribes Caenoprosopini, Ammoba- toidini, Townsendiellini, Epeoloidini, and Osirini are also members of the subfamily, although their larvae have not as yet been collected. Although the interrelationships of the numerous taxa within the Nomadinae need to be re-evaluated, the tribal concepts used by Michener (1944) are employed here. Adjustments in the classifications will certainly have to be made in the future, however, for Michener (1954) has already indicated, for example, that characters of the adults in the Osirini, the Epeolini, and the Nomadini intergrade. The affinities of the Nomadinae with the other subfamilies of the Antho- phoridae will be discussed in the last paper of the series. Scottish Bees Introduction to bees Bees are fascinating insects that can be found in a broad range of habitats from urban gardens to grasslands and wetlands. There are over 270 species of bee in the UK in 6 families - 115 of these have been recorded in Scotland, with 4 species now thought to be extinct and insufficient data available for another 2 species. Bees are very diverse, varying in size, tongue-length and flower preference. In the UK we have 1 species of honey bee, 24 species of bumblebee and the rest are solitary bees. They fulfil an essential ecological and environmental role as one of the most significant groups of pollinating insects, all of which we depend upon for the pollination of 80% of our wild and cultivated plants. Some flowers are in fact designed specifically for bee pollination, to the exclusion of generalist pollinators. Bees and their relatives Bees are classified in the complex insect order Hymenoptera (meaning membrane-winged), which also includes many kinds of parasitic wasps, gall wasps, hunting wasps, ants and sawflies. There are about 150,000 species of Hymenoptera known worldwide separated into two sub-orders. The first is the most primitive sub-order Symphyta which includes the sawflies and their relatives, lacking a wasp-waist and generally with free-living caterpillar-like larvae. The second is the sub-order Apocrita, which includes the ants, bees and wasps which are ’wasp-waisted’ and have grub-like larvae that develop within hosts, galls or nests. The sub-order Apocrita is in turn divided into two sections, the Parasitica and Aculeata. -

September 1997 Specimens representing 19 orders and 169 arthropod families (mostly insects) were collected from greenleaf manzanita brushfields in northeastern California and identified to species whenever possible. More than500 taxa below the family level wereinventoried, and each listing includes relative frequency of encounter, life stages collected, and dominant role in the greenleaf manzanita community. Specific host relationships are included for some predators and parasitoids. Herbivores, predators, and parasitoids comprised the majority (80 percent) of identified insects and related taxa. This study invest- igated Narcissus longispathus, a self-compatible bee-pollinated species with wide variation in anther–stigma separation (herkogamy), to determine the relationship between variation in this floral trait and the relative amounts of cross- and self-fertilization. Methods Anther–stigma separation was measured in the field in six populations of N. longispathus from south- eastern Spain. Variation in herkogamy during the life of individual flowers was also quantified. Multilocus out- crossing rates were estimated from plants differing in herkogamy using allozyme markers. Key Results Anther–stigma separation varied considerably among flowers within the six populations studied (range = 1–10 mm). This variation was nearly one order of magnitude larger than the slight, statistically non-significant developmental variation during thelifespanof individual flowers.Estimates of multilocus outcrossingrate for different herkogamy classes (tm range = 0Á49–0Á76) failed to reveal a monotonic increase with increasing herkogamy. Conclusions It is suggested that the lack of a positive relationship between herkogamy and outcrossing rate, a result that has not been previously documented for other species, could be mostly related to details of the foraging behaviour of pollinators. -

Introduction In the Afrotropical region the family Andrenidae is represented by more than 30 species (EARDLEY & URBAN 2010). The Eritrean fauna of of the family Andrenidae is poorly known. The knowledge is based on the material collected by J.K. Lord in 1869 and by P. Magretti in 1900. No further material is known. Up to date two species each of the subfamilies Andreninae (genus Andrena FABRICIUS, 1775) and Panurginae (genera Borgatomelissa PATINY, 2000 and Meliturgula FRIESE, 1903) have been recorded from Eritrea. Identifying Bee-Flies in Genus Bombylius
Soldierflies and Allies Soldierflies and Allies Recording Scheme: Identifying bee-flies in genus Bombylius Compiled by Martin C. Harvey version 2, July 2014 In Britain there are four species of bee-fly in genus Bombylius, including perhaps the recording scheme’s most familiar fly: the Dark-edged Bee-fly Bombylius major. All four Bombylius have a long proboscis (‘tongue’) extending forward from the head, which they use to feed on nectar from flowering plants, often doing so while hovering over the flowers. They lay their eggs into the nests of solitary bees, where the bee-fly larvae prey on the bee larvae. The Dark-edged Bee-fly is by far the most frequently seen species, and is a familiar feature of early spring in gardens as well as countryside. In the south Dotted Bee-fly can also be numerous in suitable places. The other two species are smaller and rarer: the Western Bee-fly in a mix of habitats in western England and Wales, the Heath Bee-fly a specialist of heaths and largely confined to Dorset. Nine species are recognized in this region, five of which are described as new: N. mesopotamica, N. longula, N. chacoana, N. missionica, and N. turrigera. Lectotypes are designated for N. pampicola Holmberg, 1886, and N. costalis Brèthes, 1909. A new name, N. holmbergiana, is proposed for Hypochrotaenia parvula Holmberg, 1886, preoccupied in Nomada, and a neotype is designated for H. parvula Holmberg. A key to the species, descriptions, distributional data, and illustrations are provided. Key words: Cleptoparasitic bees, Nomadini, Argentina, new species.
