Hoewel, je zal toch opmerken dat sommige te kampen hadden met een onherstelbaar verlies. Inderdaad er wordt regelmatig gemaaid in onze rangen. Dit moet ons er toe aanzetten om die kansen te grijpen waar wij nog eens gezellig over het verleden kunnen keuvelen en met verwachting kijken naar de toekomst. In dit nummer zal je merken dat er naast de traditionele plechtigheden ook nog wat op til is. Je zal wel bemerkt hebben dat het voorblad is veranderd. Daar is een goede reden voor. Het is bijna niet te geloven maar onze Vriendenkring bestaat 25 jaar. In augustus 1988 kwamen enkele dapperen bijeen in de schoot van het Regiment om de Vriendenkring op te richten. Aanvankelijk namen wij de benaming Verbroedering aan. Dat herinnerde te veel aan de Verbroederingen van de Anciens die wij kenden en vreesden dat niet aantrekkelijk was voor jongere mensen. En schakelden over naar Vriendenkring Carabiniers. Bij de fusie van Carabiniers en Grenadiers namen wij de benaming Vriendenkring Carabiniers-Grenadiers aan met de hoop jongeren uit het Regiment aan te trekken. Een groot succes is dat niet geworden maar men weet nooit. Het is vooral een stimulans voor de Carabiniers die ook Carabinier-Grenadier werden aan te trekken. Onder impuls van Albert Hendrickx en Sam Contrijn is er bijkomend leven in de brouwerij gekomen. In de voorbije jaren werden al bijkomende activiteiten georganiseerd. Dit jaar kan je hetzij naar Brasschaat afreizen om een bezoek te brengen aan het museum ter plekke of naar Sint Truiden afreizen voor een gezellige bijeenkomst onder vrienden. Dan schreven wij nog niet over de tweemaandelijkse bijeenkomsten in de schoot van het Regiment waar heel wat herinneringen met woord en beeld worden aangebracht. Wij geniete er de ruime steun van de korpscommandant LtKol SBH Staelens en de korpsadjudant Adjt Maj Smets. Wij beraden ons nog wat wij kunnen doen op 25 september op de Dag van de Carabiniers, waarvoor op dit ogenblik de medewerking van de Villa Astrid is toegezegd. In de laatste maanden hebben zich al enkele Carabiniers gemeld om een handje toe te steken wat wij ten zeerste waarderen. Je mag niet vergeten dat in de meeste kringen het bestuur al 25 jaren actief is. Een verjonging dringt zich op. Wij zijn het nog niet moe maar geen enkele kaars blijft eeuwig branden, lees onze bijdrage “In Memoriam”. Wij hopen het nog een tijd vol te houden maar wij beslissen er niet over. Dus wie staat er nog op om aan de kar te duwen. Ik wil alleen eindigen met een oproep “ er wordt iets georganiseerd laat het niet voorbij gaan. Vele willen altijd naar het buitenland maar er zijn ook nog veel dingen te zien in eigen land. Daarom een warme oproep naar allen. Waardeer de inzet van jullie bestuursleden. Jullie aanwezigheid is een aanmoediging om er mee door te gaan en wie weet nog beter te doen. WP 3 De Carapat jaargang 25 editie 1 Tweemaandelijkse bijeenkomsten U weet alle dat Albert Hendrickx er in geslaagd is in de schoot van het regiment tweemaandelijks een bijeenkomst te organiseren. Tot nu toe werd daar weinig over geschreven. Ten onrechte. Deze bijeenkomsten worden bijgewoond door telkens een dertigtal leden en gebeuren in een gemoedelijke sfeer. Dankzij de intensieve medewerking van de korpsadjudant Adjudant Majoor Carl Smets worden ook militaire toelichtingen aangeboden. Het is een meer dan geslaagd initiatief en het zijn momenten waar nieuwe initiatieven om activiteiten buiten het Regiment te bespreken en te plannen. Zo is er in de komende maanden een bijeenkomst in Brasschaat en een andere in Sint- Truiden. Zoals reeds aangehaald komt alle lof Albert toe. Ik weet dat hij niet graag te veel lof wordt toegezwaaid maar hiermee heeft hij opnieuw bewezen dat hij van onschatbare waarde is voor de vriendenkring. Indien u wil deelnemen dan moet u de kalender hierna raadplegen: - 13 maart - 08 mei - 10 juli - 11september - 13 november Door omstandigheden kan deze kalender aangepast worden. Mocht u aan één van deze bijeenkomsten willen deelnemen verwittig dan Albert Hendrickx hetzij met brief, met telefoon of via mail “[email protected]. Dan moet u volgende gegevens meedelen : naam, adres, postnummer, gemeente , nummer van je identiteitskaart, merk van het voertuig en de nummerplaat. Dit geldt tevens voor uw echtgenote of partner. Dat is niet zo bemoedigend en wijst er op dat onze dagen geteld zijn, zonder pessimistisch te willen overkomen. Het moet er ons toe aanzetten daar waar het kan elkaar op te zoeken en/of terug te vinden Met droefheid vernemen wij het overlijden van Carabinier Aimé Raes, geboren op 26 oktober 1931 te Moerkerke en overleden te Sijsele op 28 november 2012. Aan zijn echtgenote Mevrouw Maria Dhaens en de familie betuigen wij onze innige deelneming en wensen haar veel moed en sterkte om samen met de kinderen haar verdriet te verwerken en deze donkere periode door te komen. Deze keer wordt Cdt Laurent Decloedt getroffen door het overlijden op 29 december 2012 van zijn partner Mevrouw Marie-Jeanne Mommens. Zij werd begraven op het kerkhof van Engsbergen op 05 januari 2013.Cdt Decloedt kwam bij de Carabiniers begin de jaren zestig en oefende verschillende functies uit in het Regiment. Hij was pelotonscommandant in verschillende compagnies. Aan deze lijst moeten wij weer verder breien. Zopas vernemen wij het overlijden van EreLtKol Jules Berckmans. Van oorsprong Carabinier Wielrijder voegde hij zich toch nog bij het moederregiment om er verschillende functies te bekleden. Hij overleed op 03 feb 2013 6 De Carapat jaargang 25 editie 1 7 De Carapat jaargang 25 editie 1 Plechtigheid te Zuidschote op zondag 21 april 2013. De jaarlijkse herdenking van de slachtoffers van de gasaanval te Steenstraat gaat door op 21 april .Met het doel de weerstand te breken aan de Ijzer werd door de Duitsers geöpteerd voor een aanval gesteund door granaten gevuld met gas.

    The Pipes and Drums of The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers and Greys) The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards are Scotland`s senior regiment and only regular cavalry regiment. The Regiment was formed in 1971 from the amalgamation of the 3rd Carabiniers (whom were themselves the result of the amalgamation of the 6th Dragoon Guards the Carabiniers and the 3rd the Prince of Wales Dragoon Guards in 1922) and The Royal Scots Greys (2nd Dragoons). The history of The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards is therefore the record of three ancient regiments. Through The Royal Scots Greys, whose predecessors were raised by King Charles II in 1678 the Regiment can claim to be the oldest surviving Cavalry of the Line in The British Army. Displayed on the Regimental Standard are just fifty of the numerous battle honours won in wars and campaigns spanning three centuries. The most celebrated of these are Waterloo, Balaklava and Nunshigum. At the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 the Scots Greys took part in the famous Charge of the Union Brigade. It was here that Sergeant Ewart captured the Imperial Eagle, the Standard of Napoleon`s 45th Regiment. This standard is now displayed in the Home Headquarters of The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards at Edinburgh Castle and in commemoration the Eagle forms part of The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards cap badge. During the Crimean War in 1854 two Victoria Crosses were awarded at the Battle of Balaklava against the Russians in the famous Charge of the Heavy Brigade. In World War II the battle honour Nunshigum was won by B Squadron of the 3rd Carabiniers against the Japanese in Burma.

This thesis describes the process by which horsed cavalrymen were re-trained in armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs) and the experiences of some of the regiments managing this change. Extensive use has been made of the oral testimonies of many of the soldiers involved, a number of whom are still living, as well as regimental and War Office archives. The reason given for the delay in cavalry mechanization, cited in some military histories, much influenced by Sir Basil Liddell Hart, was resistance from the cavalry to parting from their horses.

The brigade was originally intended to be landed at Singapore, for deployment in Malaya, but the withdrawal of British forces to the Island of Singapore meant that it was impractical to land the brigade there.
