It really hit me this past year that Habitat homeowners must feel those same emotions when they accomplish something as big as building their own home, signing the mortgage and receiving the keys to a home they can call their own. In 2014 when Habitat set a goal of building its 500th home, it seemed like an impossible challenge; yet in December 2018, that goal was accomplished due to the generosity of donors who provided the funds, the volunteers who worked overtime to make it happen and those families who stepped out in faith to dream big! Having achieved the 500th home goal, it’s time for Habitat to dream big again! Dreaming big has never been a problem for Habitat for Humanity of Evansville! We only have to look at the rich history of Habitat donors and volunteers coming together: • 3 blitz builds in 1992, 2000 and 2002 in which a total of ___ homes were constructed in a week • The New Haven development - a 55 house subdivision to serve survivors of the 2005 tornado • The Glenwood Neighborhood Revitalization initiative which resulted in ___ families putting down roots and improving the Glenwood neighborhood and • The Transforming Lives, Changing Neighborhoods plan which prepared and built homes for 62 families and achieved of the 500th home! In 2019 it was time to turn the page from the 500th home celebration and ask ourselves where we wanted to go in the next chapter of Habitat’s story. I am happy to report the future looks bright! Habitat’s 100 Homes with 100 Families plan sets a vision of improving the quality of life in our community by increasing homeownership rates and building family stability for 100 more families by 2023! You will see the beginning stages of this vision coming to fruition in the pages of this 2018-2019 annual report. 505 more families now know the stability of a well-built, affordable home because of you. On average, these families are spending about $200 less per month on housing costs since moving into their Habitat home. They are also paying lower utility bills because of the energy efficiency of Habitat homes. And in part due to Habitat’s Money Management Seminar, they are saving more and building economic sustainability! Most importantly these families have a solid foundation to build a brighter future for themselves and their children. Families continue to tell us about their successes – getting better jobs, raising their credit scores, and funding emergency savings accounts – and the success of their children – making honor roll, participating in orchestra, and playing on sports teams. We continually seek to be good stewards of the gifts you give to Habitat. The mortgage payments from Habitat homeowners continue to cover all administrative, fundraising and overhead costs so that every dollar given to Habitat for Humanity of Evansville goes into building more homes. Our affiliate also has maintained its Four-Star Charity Navigator rating! Most recently the Evansville affiliates has been named as a Top 40 Builder in the Habitat organization. We were 31st out of the 1200 affiliates across the United States when it came to building new homes – just a few back from Los Angeles, New Orleans, Dallas and Louisville! These accolades belong to the entire Habitat family! Because of your tremendous generosity of time, talent and treasurer and God’s guiding hand, we have been able to continue to build homes, communities and hope! As Habitat for Humanity supporters, we all see the need for a world where everyone has a decent place to live. We invite you to help us build that world!
