For some their reintroduction to civilian life was straightforward and uneventful. Many simply returned to the jobs they had previously occupied before the war. For others their readjustment to civilian life was difficult, full of despair and bitter disappointment. Similarly, the repatriation, resettlement and rehabilitation of the empire's soldiers and sailors presented post-war administrations with a host of social, political and economic problems. So far as they were concerned reconstruction was a daunting challenge which had to be met with the greatest possible energy, efficiency and decisiveness. -

182 Proceedings of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. [Ress. OBITUARY NOTICES. Sir John Jackson, Kt., LL.D. By David Alan Stevenson, B.Sc, M.Inst.C.E. i.MS. received and read June 21, 1920.) SIR JOHN JACKSON, the head of the well-known firm of " Sir John Jackson, Limited," was born at York in 1851. Immediately on leaving school he entered workshops in Newcastle to learn the mechanical side of the profession that he was ultimately to follow, and from there he proceeded to Edinburgh University to study science and engineering generally. At the university he came under the influence of the late Professor Tait, and so impressed was he with the value of the training he received in Tait's laboratory that, when Tait died, Sir John founded the " Tait Memorial Fund " to encourage physical research. At the early age of twenty-five he obtained his first contract, and soon afterwards he was entrusted with the contract for the completion of Stobcross Docks, Glasgow, a difficult and important work involving the sinking of cylinders in soft ground, at that time a novel form of construct- ing foundations. This was rapidly followed by such important under- takings as Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, and North Sunderland Docks, the extension of the Admiralty Pier at Dover, the completion of the last eight miles of the Manchester Ship Canal, in connection with which he was knighted, the Dover Commercial Harbour, the foundations of the Tower Bridge, docks at Swansea, Methil, and Burntisland, and a deep lock at Barry. The greatest undertaking in this country he was responsible for was undoubtedly the extension of the Admiralty Works at Keyham, a work of peculiar engineering difficulty on account of the great depth to which the foundations had to be carried, which took ten years to complete and cost nearly £4,000,000. -

Newsletter No. 57 - September 2006 Price £1 (Free to Members) Chairmans Report In this issue: by Bob Flanagan Hannibal Although the major disruption caused by the roadway and drainage works in the Eastern part of Hawkins the cemetery is at an end, there are still some outstanding issues. Firstly, a walk round with site Macarthur manager Avril Kirby early in August revealed (1788-1861) damage to the two new signs adjacent to the Gilbart Page 4 memorial (one has been completely knocked off its supports, one bent sideways). Secondly, several of the new litter bins adjacent to the roadways have William been badly damaged. Whilst some of this may be attributable to contractors vehicles (bins situated Knight near to the Greek Cemetery, for example), some (1843-1900) clearly cannot (by the St Mary-at-Hill path). Page 7 Clearly a major issue with this path is its continuing use by vehicles, including cemetery vehicles, a Alfie Howard, consequence of its narrowing by Lambeth some 20 years ago. The path is too narrow for wheeled Lambeth vehicles unless specially adapted and driven with extreme care, a fact that should have been thought of Town Crier by the Council when they took the decision to do (1912-2006) away with the roadway! Page 9 As to the carriageway repairs to Steep Hill made necessary by all the heavy vehicle movements Book Reviews connected with the roadway works, these are still to be undertaken. The rubbish skips, however, are soon Page 11 to be moved to their intended new site in the pens on the Eastern side of the cemetery.
