Its appeal is immediate and never failing.” • John 21:1-25 Epilogue: The Word Commissions —Leon Morris, The Gospel His Followers according to John INTRODUCTION 04 How to get the most out of this journal • SCHEDULE YOUR READING Set aside a time and a place to meditate on God’s word. Create a distraction free environment to dive deeper into the scripture. • PRAY BEFORE YOU READ Ask God to reveal his truths as you read. Pray for consistency and clarity. • READ WITH A FRIEND Read with someone that will hold you accountable to your daily reading. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” • SHARE WHAT YOU ARE LEARNING Don’t just read it! Share how God’s word is speaking to you. INTRODUCTION 05 How to S.O.A.P. ITEMS NEEDED EACH DAY: • Bible • Pen • Journal • SCRIPTURE / What verse stood out to you? Open your Bible to your reading for the day. Take time reading and allow God to speak to you. When you are done, look for a verse that particularly spoke to you that day and write it in your journal. • OBSERVATION / What is God saying to you? What do you feel God is saying to you in this scripture? Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you and reveal Jesus to you. • APPLICATION / How can you apply it today? Personalize what you have read, by asking yourself how it applies to your life right now. Perhaps it is instruction, encouragement, a new promise, or corrections for a particular area of your life. Write how this scripture can apply to you today. • PRAYER / Ask God to help you use what you’ve learned. This can be as simple as asking God to help you use this scripture, or even a prayer for a greater insight on what He may be revealing to you. Remember, prayer is a two-way conversation, so be sure to listen to what God has to say! Now, write it out. INTRODUCTION 06 Week 01 / John 1-2 OVERVIEW The first two chapters of John set the tone for the entire book. John reminds us that Jesus is both the Son of God and also God. John 1 points us to the Trinity (God the Father, Jesus the Son and The Holy Spirit). John reminds us of the incarnation of Jesus - God with skin-on. John the Baptist prepares the way for Jesus’ coming. Sometimes we picture Jesus as nice and safe, however in John 2 we find Jesus in the temple making a whip and flipping tables over. Jesus was passionate about God’s house. MEMORIZATION JOHN 1:17-18 17 For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us. SCRIPTURE OBSERVATION APPLICATION PRAYER WEEK 01 14 Week 02 / John 3-4 OVERVIEW Jesus tells the Pharisee Nicodemus that unless someone is born again, they cannot see the kingdom of God. You must be born of water and the Sprit. As Moses lifted up the bronze serpent in the wilderness, so shall the Son of Man be lifted, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life. The Son is sent to save, not condemn. Light has come into the world, but humanity love the darkness more. Those who believes in the Son will have eternal life. Jesus travels to Galilee via Samaria. Jesus asks a Samaritan woman at a well for a drink. The Samaritan woman is surprised, as Samaritans have no dealings with Jews. Jesus says that whoever drinks water from this well will thirst again, who whoever drinks living water shall never thirst. Jesus confronts the woman for having five husbands. A time is coming when God will be worshipped neither on a mountain nor in Jerusalem, but in spirit and truth. Jesus tells the woman that he is the Messiah. The woman tells her neighbours, and spreads the news. Jesus says his food is to do the will of Him who sent him. Through Jesus, his disciples may reap that for which they have not laboured – fruit for eternal life. Jesus heals a Government official’s son at Capernaum. MEMORIZATION JOHN 4:23 23 But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. SCRIPTURE OBSERVATION APPLICATION PRAYER WEEK 02 22 Week 03 / John 5-6 OVERVIEW Those who are sick hope to be cured by bathing in the pool of Bathesda. Jesus heals a man who has been lying there sick for 38 years. Jesus tells him to take up his mat and walk – he is healed. Some religious leaders take offence that this has been done on a Sabbath. Jesus speaks to them. The Son can do nothing of himself. The Father commits all authority to the Son. Jesus is a just judge who follows the will of God. Jesus does not bear witness for himself (which would be invalid in a court of law) – another bears witness to him. If you do not believe the Son, you do not have the word of the Father dwelling within you. Jesus feeds the five thousand with five loaves of bread and two small fishes.
