Biographical Note

Dr. Wilkie served as an associate professor in the sociology, anthropology, and social work department at Southeast Missouri State University from 1976 to 1988. During his time at the University, Wilkie assisted in multiple archaeology summer schools at the Hunze-Evans site south of Cape Girardeau. Wilkie also did contract archaeology work during which he conducted surveys in the Southeastern Missouri region.

After leaving Southeast Missouri State University in 1988, Wilkie was hired on as an associate professor at Plymouth State College, Plymouth, New Hampshire. In 1992 he began work as a VTrans Archaeology Officer for the Vermont Agency of Transportation. Wilke plans to retire in 2009.

Scope and Content Note

Dr. Wilkie’s original donation consists of Cultural Resource Surveys conducted by Dr. Wilkie from 1976 to 1986. The collection received in 2004 contained additional Cultural Resource Surveys that were integrated with the original donations into Series I. Also added at this time were slides, photographs, negatives, maps, and additional papers, which consist of the Series II to XI.

Some of the main archaeology excavation information found in this collection includes Dr. Wilkie’s work at the Towosahgy State Historic Site, the Hunze-Evans site, and the Trail of Tears State Park, all of which are located in southern Missouri. The photographs and negatives are cross-referenced in Appendix B. Some of the slides are identical to the photographs and negatives in the collection, but have not been cross-referenced.

Archivist Note: Items received were mostly in excellent condition and required minimal conservation work such as removing staples and interleaving. Two individuals worked on this collection during part of the processing period. Some of the documents in the collection have spelling errors; in particular “Towosahgy” is spelled incorrectly throughout the collection.

Rules or Conventions: Finding Aid prepared using DACS.

Series I: Cultural Resource Surveys (CRS) Contains reports 1 to 44 of Cultural Resource Surveys (CRS) conducted by Dr. Wilkie. Cultural Resource Surveys are done in certain locations to identify the existence and extent of cultural resources in the area. Cultural resources are both tangible and intangible, and include archaeological artifacts, architecture, artwork, folklore, etc. The information gathered from the survey are then analyzed and compiled into a formal report. The reports in the Dr. Duncan Wilkie Collection were performed in southern Missouri from 1976 to 1986.
